Turn a sturdy reclaimed cardboard box into an attractive organizer with fabric, scissors and glue. The makeover is deliberately simple: prepare the box, wrap each side panel, fold the fabric neatly at the corners, and glue the excess underneath. The tutorial is labeled “5 Minute” in its title and image caption but calls the project “10-minute” in its body; those are promotional descriptions, not timed tests. Cutting, glue-setting time and optional painting can make the project take longer.

You end up with an open-top storage box whose outside is covered in fabric. Burlap gives a relaxed, textured look, but any fabric you already have can work if it can be cut cleanly and bonded to cardboard. The reclaimed box supplies the structure, so you are decorating and reinforcing an item you already own rather than buying a new organizer.

The finished box is suited to lightweight household sorting such as pantry packets, cleaning supplies or craft materials. A separate paper-wrapped method is useful for toys, stationery, keepsakes, paperwork and accessories. Neither set of instructions establishes a tested weight limit, moisture resistance or food-contact safety. Keep the boxes dry and use a liner or a different container wherever spills, dampness or direct food contact are possible.
Materials and tools
- A sturdy reclaimed cardboard box. Remove loose, crushed or damp boxes before starting.
- Fabric, with burlap as the featured example.
- Scissors suitable for cutting the fabric.
- Hot glue and a glue gun, or regular craft glue.
- Optional: acrylic or craft paint for stripes or another pattern.
- Optional: masking or decorative tape to create a stencil mask.
- Optional: clips to hold burlap while glue sets.
The method is designed to need no special tools. A mini hot-glue gun with glue sticks is a convenient optional supply, but regular glue is explicitly acceptable when you do not have a glue gun. Reuse fabric and cardboard you already own instead of purchasing a complete organizer kit.
Prepare the reclaimed box
Choose a sound base
Pick a box with firm sides and a bottom that is not sagging. Shoe boxes, shipping cartons and similar boxes can work when their cardboard is still rigid. Brush off dust and remove labels that would create a high spot under the fabric. If a corner is already separating, reinforce it with a small amount of glue and let it hold before covering the outside.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Deal with the lid flaps
The featured fabric version is an open box. Cut the lid flaps off, or push them inward against the inside walls so they do not project above the rim. Cutting produces a clean, open edge; tucking avoids discarding material but can make the inside slightly tighter. Press the flaps flat before you begin wrapping the exterior.
Fabric-covered box: step-by-step
1. Measure and position the fabric
Set the box on the wrong side of the fabric and identify the pieces needed for the sides. Leave enough fabric to extend below the bottom edge so you can fold it underneath. Working with one panel at a time is easier than trying to glue the entire box in a single operation.

2. Glue the first side
Apply glue to the cardboard side, then place the fabric over it. Smooth from the center toward the edges as you go, pressing out wrinkles before the adhesive grabs. With hot glue, work in short sections because it sets quickly. With regular glue, spread a thin, even layer and hold the fabric in place while it begins to bond.
3. Continue panel by panel
Move around the box, aligning the fabric at each top edge and keeping the surface taut without stretching it out of shape. Overlap or butt the fabric at the final seam according to the look you want; a small overlap hides exposed cardboard more reliably than a gap. Avoid flooding the fabric with adhesive, which can show through open weaves such as burlap.

At every corner, snip the fabric where it needs to turn rather than forcing a bulky bundle around the cardboard. Make controlled cuts toward the corner, stopping short of the edge so you do not cut past the area that must be covered. Fold the resulting flaps neatly around the corner and glue them down.
5. Finish underneath
Turn the box over and fold the excess fabric onto the bottom. Snip away unnecessary bulk, then glue the remaining edges flat. Hot glue can make this finishing step easier because it holds a fold almost immediately; regular glue also works if you press or clip the fabric while it sets. Clips are especially useful for keeping burlap from lifting at the underside edges.
6. Inspect the rim and seams
Run a finger around the top edge and check for loose sections, exposed cardboard or sharp fabric corners. Add a small amount of adhesive only where needed. Let the glue set according to the adhesive label before loading the box; the project descriptions do not provide a measured drying time.

Optional painted decoration
Leave the fabric plain for the fastest finish, or add a simple pattern after the covering is secure. The featured tutorial uses tape as a stencil mask: place strips where you want the fabric protected, press the edges down, and brush acrylic or craft paint over the exposed areas. Remove the tape carefully while the paint is still at the stage recommended on its label, then allow the paint to dry fully before handling the box.

Stripes are the demonstrated idea, but the same mask can make blocks, bands or a basic geometric pattern. Test paint on a fabric offcut first, especially with loose-weave burlap, because paint can spread through openings. Stenciling is optional work and is one reason the project may take longer than the title suggests.
Paper-wrapped alternative with a separate lid
If you want a smoother printed surface or a box that keeps its lid, use the paper method described by Bostik DIY UK. Its guide notes that “Shoe boxes work particularly well for this project, but almost any sturdy cardboard box can be transformed into attractive storage.” This is a distinct approach, not a tested improvement to the burlap version.
Materials
- A sturdy cardboard box, with the original lid if available.
- Wrapping paper.
- A glue stick.
- Scissors and a ruler or straightedge for measuring.
- Optional stickers, embellishments and labels.
Method
- Measure the base and sides, allowing extra paper so the edges can fold over the cardboard rather than ending exactly at the edge.
- Cut the paper and dry-fit it around the box before applying adhesive. This catches measurement errors while the paper is still clean.
- Apply glue to the base, place the paper, and smooth it outward to reduce bubbles and wrinkles.
- Wrap the side panels, folding the extra allowance over the top and bottom edges. Crease the corners so the folds lie flat instead of forming thick bunches.
- Measure, cut and cover the lid separately. Keeping the lid as its own piece lets it open and close without pulling the paper from the box.
- Add stickers, an embellishment or a label once the paper is firmly attached.
Paper is generally less forgiving of repeated repositioning than fabric: a torn or heavily wrinkled sheet may need to be replaced. Keep the finished paper box away from damp areas.
Fabric or paper: which covering fits your project?
| Choice | Surface | Adhesive | Finishing work | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric version | Fabric, including burlap | Hot glue or regular glue | Snip and fold corners; glue excess underneath; clips can hold burlap while it sets | Textured, soft-looking open storage |
| Paper version | Wrapping paper | Glue stick | Measure with extra allowance, fold paper flaps, and wrap the lid separately | Printed or coordinated boxes for toys, stationery, keepsakes, paperwork or accessories |
The fabric instructions concentrate on an open box, while the paper instructions explicitly cover a separate lid. Choose based on the surface and closure you want, not on an assumption that one method is stronger: the cited instructions do not report comparative strength tests.

Make the result look deliberate
Keep edges aligned
Before gluing each panel, line up the fabric or paper with the top rim. Small variations become obvious when the box is placed beside others. If your material has a stripe or repeating print, plan the orientation before cutting so neighboring panels do not run in conflicting directions.
Control corner bulk
Most homemade-looking finishes come from excess material trapped at the corners. Several small, purposeful snips create flatter folds than one deep cut. Stop each cut short of the cardboard edge, fold the flaps in sequence, and trim only after you see where the layers overlap.
Use labels for fast retrieval
A paper label, painted band or optional sticker makes a group of identical boxes easier to scan. Label the contents rather than the room where the box sits; “spare light bulbs” or “watercolor supplies” remains useful when you move the box to another shelf.
Where to use the boxes
- Pantry sorting: Group sealed packets, tea supplies or unopened ingredients. Keep the box away from leaks and do not place food directly against painted or glued surfaces.
- Cleaning supplies: Corral cloths, sponges and unopened packages. Store liquids in leakproof containers and remove the box if it becomes damp.
- Craft storage: Separate yarn, paper, brushes or small tools. Heavier tools may deform cardboard, so distribute weight rather than treating the box as a load-rated bin.
- Toys and stationery: The paper-covered version can hold lightweight toys, notebooks, pens and school supplies.
- Keepsakes and paperwork: A lidded paper box can keep loose cards or documents together, provided the storage area is dry.
- Accessories: Use labels to sort scarves, hair accessories or small personal items without buying a matching set of containers.
More involved fabric-wrapped bin
For a more finished, bin-like result, HGTV describes a different fabric-wrapped file-box variant. It adds an interior lining and an outer fabric layer, uses spray adhesive and hot glue, and can include rope handles fitted with grommets. Those additions create more steps and materials, so this is an upgrade path rather than a five-minute method. Choose it when you need a lined interior or carrying handles and are willing to trade speed for construction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon problems and fixes
Wrinkles appear on a side
Lift and reposition the material before the adhesive fully sets, then smooth from the center outward. For regular glue, use a thinner coat; excess moisture can make paper or lightweight fabric buckle.

The corner looks bulky
Trim one or two overlapping flaps, make shorter snips toward the corner, and refold. Do not cut all the way to the cardboard edge, or the corner may expose the box.
Fabric pulls away underneath
Press the fold flat and add a narrow line of glue. Hold it with a clip while it sets, particularly when working with loosely woven burlap.
The seam shows
Reposition the final panel so its edge overlaps the preceding one slightly. A deliberate overlap is easier to hide than a narrow gap that reveals cardboard.
The lid no longer fits
This is most likely when a lid is wrapped in the same way as a tight-fitting box. The paper method avoids the problem by measuring and covering the lid as a separate piece. For a fabric project, keep the open-box design or allow extra clearance before adding any covering.
Timing, expectations and safe limits
The phrase “5 Minute” belongs to the featured tutorial’s title and image caption, while the body calls it a “10-minute” project. No independent timed test accompanies either label. Treat the project as a quick makeover when the box and materials are ready, not as a guaranteed five-minute task. Measuring, cutting, corner work, glue-setting and optional stenciling all add time.
These directions also do not establish a quantitative study, load rating, waterproofing claim or food-contact approval. Use a dry, sturdy box for lightweight organization, inspect it periodically, and replace it if the cardboard softens, the bottom sags or the covering begins to detach.
A repeatable workflow for a set of boxes
- Collect boxes of similar height and remove their flaps or decide which ones will keep lids.
- Sort your available fabric, wrapping paper and labels before cutting anything.
- Finish one box completely, including the underside, so you can refine your corner technique.
- Use that finished box as a visual reference for the remaining panels.
- Label each box immediately after its covering is secure, then place only lightweight, dry items inside.
This approach keeps the inexpensive reclaimed base while giving a mismatched collection a coordinated appearance. Fabric, paper, paint and labels let you vary the look without changing the basic cardboard structure.
