You can build a convincing faux floating shelf with a 2×8 board and small L-shaped brackets in a short afternoon project. The brackets are attached underneath and remain partly visible, unlike a true floating-shelf mount hidden inside the wood. That simpler construction is suitable for light decorative displays, but it is not a tested heavy-storage system. Use fasteners matched to your wall and intended load, and choose stronger brackets if you need to support substantial stacks of books.

What this faux floating-shelf design actually is
A traditional floating shelf hides a cleat or projecting rod inside a hollowed board. This project takes a faster route: a solid 2×8 board sits on 5×3-inch L-shaped angle brackets. The brackets are turned to reduce the amount visible from normal viewing angles, then painted to blend with the shelf and wall. The result has the visual effect of a floating shelf without the interior joinery, routing or concealed hardware.
The original tutorial, updated January 11, 2024, describes two leftover boards measuring 22 inches and 30 inches. Those lengths are examples rather than required sizes. You can cut a different length, provided the board, bracket spacing and wall fasteners are appropriate for the objects you intend to display.

You will also need a pencil, tape measure, level and a screwdriver or driver bit. Have a stable work surface for marking and drilling. If you are painting, allow the finish to dry according to its label; the 15-minute wording in the source does not define whether drying, shopping or wall preparation is included.
Plan the shelf before drilling
Choose a realistic display load
Plan this version for light décor such as a small plant, framed picture, vase, a few books or pottery. The tutorial’s author says the brackets are acceptable for a few books but that stronger brackets are better for heavy books. That is a practical comment, not a certified capacity statement: no tested weight, wall-condition assumption or numeric rating is published for this setup.
If your goal is a full shelf of books, dense storage, a large ceramic collection or anything that could injure someone if it fell, redesign the support first. Use brackets with a published rating appropriate to the load, place them where they can engage framing or suitable masonry anchors, and follow the bracket maker’s installation requirements. Do not infer a safe maximum from the board size or from the project’s low cost.

Set bracket positions
Mark each bracket a few inches in from the shelf ends, leaving enough wood beyond the bracket for strength and a balanced appearance. Longer shelves may need additional support, but the source does not specify a spacing rule or provide a tested arrangement. Treat the two-bracket layout as the tutorial’s example, not a universal design formula.
Check the wall area for a stud, masonry, plumbing and electrical hazards before drilling. The fastening method is determined by the wall, not by the screws that happen to come in a bracket packet.
Build and install the shelf
- Prepare the board. Cut the 2×8 to your desired length if necessary, then smooth splinters and sharp edges. Decide whether the shelf will be painted, stained or left natural. The example uses a white painted finish.
- Apply the finish. Paint or stain all visible faces, or leave the wood unfinished. For a natural or stained shelf, a finishing wax or oil can add protection against water and stains. Let the finish dry before mounting hardware; wet coating can mark the wall and make screw holes less secure.
- Mark the brackets. Measure a few inches in from each end on the underside of the board and position the brackets consistently. Put the shelf on a flat surface while marking so the brackets sit square.
- Drill pilot holes. Use a bit smaller than the screw shaft to drill pilot holes through the bracket holes into the board. Pilot holes help prevent the 1.5-inch-thick wood from splitting when screws are driven.
- Attach each bracket to the shelf. The tutorial shows at least two screws on the underside and one screw on the side of each bracket. Reverse the usual L-bracket orientation to reduce the visible profile from below and in front. Tighten the screws until the bracket is secure; over-tightening can strip the wood.
- Blend the hardware. Paint the brackets and screw heads to match the shelf if you want a quieter appearance. Let that coating dry fully. The brackets are still part of the support, so do not cover their openings or deform them with thick paint.
- Transfer the wall marks. Hold the assembled shelf at the desired height. Place a level on the shelf, adjust until it is level, and mark through the open holes in each bracket. Having a second person hold the board makes this step easier and keeps the marks accurate.
- Drill for the wall type. For drywall, drill the hole size specified for the selected anchor and install the anchor squarely. If a bracket hole aligns with a stud, use an appropriate longer screw; the tutorial mentions 1.5- to 2-inch screws as a possible need for stud fastening. Do not rely on a drywall anchor where the load should be carried by framing.
- Fasten the shelf. Drive the wall screws through the bracket openings into the anchors or stud. Keep the shelf level while tightening and stop when the bracket is firmly seated. A screw that spins, pulls out or crushes the drywall is not a secure installation; remove it and correct the wall fastening rather than simply tightening harder.
- Load and style gradually. Start with light objects, distribute them across the board and observe whether the shelf stays level and the wall fasteners remain tight. Keep fragile or heavy items away from the front edge. Add plants, pictures, vases, books or pottery only within the load plan you selected.

The key trade-off is speed and simplicity versus load margin and concealment. A shelf that looks acceptable with empty décor can become unsafe when loaded with several tightly packed books, because books are compact and heavy. If you cannot identify the wall structure and a suitable fastening path, postpone loading rather than guessing.

How to make the brackets less noticeable
These shelves are faux floating, not completely bracket-free. The most effective visual steps are to turn the L bracket as shown in the tutorial, place it a few inches from each end, and paint the metal and screw heads to coordinate with the board. A wall-colored bracket can recede against a painted wall, while a shelf-colored bracket can look intentional on a natural board.
Keep decorations from acting as a lever against the front edge. A small object centered over a bracketed area is less visually distracting than a heavy object hanging beyond the board. Do not use décor to block access to the wall screws; you need to be able to inspect and retighten the installation.

Those figures describe that author’s project, updated January 11, 2024, rather than a guaranteed current retail cost or measured installation time. The example used leftover 2×8 pieces, which removes a lumber expense that a first-time builder may have.

Your total can change with board length, lumber prices, bracket quantity, finish, anchors and whether you already own a drill and bits. Shopping, cutting, sanding, drying, locating studs and repairing a failed anchor all add time. Treat 15 minutes as an optimistic assembly target after materials are on hand and the wall is ready, not as a promise that every shelf can be completed from purchase to styling in that interval.
Troubleshooting and corrections
The wood splits around a screw
Back the screw out, check that the pilot hole is adequately sized and centered, and move the hole only if there is enough sound wood. A screw driven too close to an edge or without a pilot hole can wedge the grain apart. Do not keep tightening a stripped or split connection.

Loosen the wall screws slightly, realign the board with a level and retighten. If it immediately tilts again, inspect whether an anchor is pulling out or a stud screw is not seated. Correct the wall fastening before adding objects.

An anchor spins or pulls from drywall
Remove the load and the loose screw. A spinning anchor is not carrying its intended share. Use an anchor compatible with the wall thickness and screw, or move the bracket to a stud if the layout allows. A larger hole alone does not solve an anchor mismatch.
The bracket remains too visible
Verify that the L orientation is reversed as in the tutorial and that the bracket sits a few inches in from the ends. Matching paint can reduce contrast, but do not bend, cut or drill the bracket to hide it; those changes can weaken the support.
You need to display many books
Do not solve this by adding objects until the shelf “feels” strong. Replace the small angle brackets with a stronger, documented support system, increase the number of supports if its instructions permit, and fasten into appropriate framing or masonry. The original tutorial does not establish a numeric capacity for a book shelf, so there is no safe number of books to calculate from it.

Final pre-load checklist
- The board is sound, finished and dry, with no split extending from a screw hole.
- Each bracket has at least two underside screws and one side screw, as shown in the tutorial.
- Bracket orientation, spacing and screw heads are consistent.
- Every wall screw is in a suitable anchor or solid framing, not a loose or spinning hole.
- The shelf is level and remains level when lightly tested by hand.
- The intended objects are light enough for the selected brackets and wall fastening; heavy book storage has been assigned stronger support.
- Decorations are distributed over the board and cannot be easily pulled forward by a child, pet or accidental bump.
With those checks complete, this faux floating-shelf method delivers the quick, low-complexity look the tutorial promises while keeping its limitations visible: the hardware is only partly concealed, and the installation has no published load rating. Build it as a light-display shelf, and change the support system when your use demands more.
