To make a felted rock, wrap a smooth stone in thin, crossed layers of wool roving, wet the wool with warm soapy water, then rub it gently at first and more firmly as the fibers begin to bind. Rinse away the soap and let the finished stone dry. Tulle or netting can help hold the wool in place, but you can complete the project without it.
What you need
- A smooth stone
- Wool roving or wool tops suitable for felting
- Soap, such as ordinary dish soap
- Warm water
- A bowl or sink
- A towel
- Optional: tulle or netting
The stone, soap, water, bowl or sink, and towel can be household items. Wool roving or tops are the essential craft fiber; an affordable wool suitable for felting is sufficient. Tulle or netting is optional and helps keep loose fibers from shifting during the first rubbing.
How to wet-felt a stone

Wrap the stone in thin layers
Pull off a thin piece of wool roving and wrap it around the stone. Add another thin layer across the first, changing direction to help cover the surface. Keep the bundle light and even rather than piling on a thick layer. Add wool only where the stone is still exposed.

Wet and settle the wool
Wet the wrapped stone with warm, soapy water. Gently pat and squeeze it so the wool settles around the shape. The fibers may move before they begin to bind, so avoid vigorous rubbing at this stage.

Rub with gradually increasing pressure
If you have tulle or netting, wrap it around the wool and rub over the netting to help control loose fibers. Otherwise, work directly with your hands. Roll, rub, and squeeze the stone gently at first; as the wool holds together, increase the pressure and friction. Continue until the covering feels firm and stays wrapped around the stone.

Rinse and dry
Rinse the finished stone with clean water to remove the soap, then leave it on a towel to dry. A cold rinse is one maker’s approach, not a universal requirement.
Choose colors and finishes
Natural-looking or decorative results are both possible. Neutral wool with small white wisps can suggest variations in stone, while related shades or bright colors create a more playful finish. For a loose marbled effect, place a thin wisp of another color over the wrapped wool before wetting and felting. The result does not need to resemble a natural rock.

Should you use netting or a felting needle?

For this project, wet felting alone is enough. Some instructions use a needle as an optional way to even out wool ends before wet felting, but you do not need one to cover a stone.
How to tell when the stone is ready
Use the feel of the wool rather than a fixed timer: it should feel firm and stay wrapped when you handle the stone. One 2009 tutorial reports 5–10 minutes for its own scrubbing stage, but time varies with the fiber and the amount of rubbing needed, so that is not a general duration to expect.

Practical care when making felted stones
These instructions do not establish an age-specific safety standard. As sensible general care, supervise children around small stones, warm water, and soap. If using a felting needle for an optional preparation step, handle it carefully and work on a suitable surface.
