To make greeting cards to sell, create an original design, choose how it will be produced, test a finished sample, calculate every per-card cost, and publish a listing that clearly tells buyers what they will receive. Handmade cards, digital printables, and cards printed by a production partner can all work; the right choice depends on your budget, available time, fulfillment preferences, and audience. Etsy is one documented online option, not a proven best venue for every card maker.
Choose a card idea and production method
Begin with a specific recipient, occasion, or interest rather than trying to appeal to everyone. Birthday cards, thank-you notes, wedding stationery, local themes, and niche interests are possible starting points. Try a small batch or ask likely customers what they would use before investing in a large print run; treat that as a way to test your own designs, not proof of broader market demand.

Make the artwork and wording yourself, or use fonts, images, and other assets only when you have permission for commercial use. Keep original files and records of licenses or commissioned work. Avoid protected characters, logos, lyrics, and copied artwork unless you have the necessary rights.

For a physical card, make a prototype before listing. Check finished dimensions, fold direction, alignment, color, legibility, any inside message, envelope fit, and protection for shipping. Paper weight and printer settings depend on the materials and equipment you use; the available Etsy guidance does not establish one mandatory specification for all cards.

Prepare physical cards for sale
A basic physical-card setup may include suitable card stock, envelopes, a reliable way to cut and score folds, adhesive or embellishments if your design needs them, and protective packaging. Choose supplies for your production method rather than buying a large assortment before you know what the card requires.
- Inspect a finished sample for clean edges, even folds, readable text, and print or artwork defects.
- Check that the card fits its envelope and that both fit the packaging you plan to mail.
- Keep track of failed prints, damaged pieces, and extra materials so your cost estimate reflects usable cards rather than ideal output.
- Photograph the actual product in good light. Show the front, inside when relevant, scale, texture or embellishment, envelope, and packaging.
For digital files, test that the file opens and that its dimensions and printing instructions are clear. Tell buyers whether they are receiving a downloadable file or a physical item; a photograph of a printed sample should not leave that distinction ambiguous.

Calculate a price that accounts for the full order
Start with your actual per-order costs, not just the paper. Use this worksheet:
Price − materials − labor − packaging − postage subsidy − platform fees − payment processing − advertising − waste and overhead = estimated contribution before tax

Include paper, ink or print charges, envelopes, embellishments, packaging, postage you cover, failed prints, and the time spent designing, assembling, packing, and handling the order. Set an hourly labor rate even if you are not initially paying yourself cash; otherwise, a time-consuming design can look profitable while effectively paying you nothing. Taxes and applicable local obligations also affect what you keep.
On Etsy, the current fee help page lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount in the listing currency, including shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing is additional and varies by country. The same page lists a 2.5% currency-conversion fee when the listing currency differs from the payment account currency, and regulatory operating fees in specified countries. Offsite Ads fees are listed as 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales during the past 365 days, and 12% for sellers at or above that threshold, capped at $100 per order. These are not a single universal cost: check the current Etsy fee and tax details for your country, account, and order circumstances, then calculate a sample order before setting your price.

A multi-card pack may spread some transaction and shipping costs across several cards, but only if the pack price, production time, and buyer expectations make sense. Revisit your prices after fulfilling test orders and recording actual costs. Etsy says its listing interface displays a profit estimate, but sellers remain responsible for choosing a sustainable price.

Etsy is a documented route for original handmade cards and seller-designed printables. Etsy’s rules also allow a seller’s original design to be printed on a physical item by a third party when the production partner is disclosed. Its policy does not establish how many sales a particular listing will receive or make it objectively better than other routes. The Los Angeles Times’ April 17, 2022 article, “How to design and sell your own greeting cards online,” is an older secondary source, not evidence of current channel fees or sales performance.
For a manageable first test, choose one online route and one local route, set a trial period, and record sales, costs, and time spent. Compare estimated contribution and workload rather than judging success by gross sales alone. Verify current terms directly with any market, retailer, storefront provider, or print service before relying on it; current terms and profitability for those alternatives are not established here.
Set up an Etsy listing accurately
Etsy’s current help describes a listing flow in which sellers register, create a listing, select a relevant category, indicate whether it is physical or digital, add media and product information, set price and quantity, enter processing and shipping details where applicable, and publish. The platform says a listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search and categories. For the latest steps, use Etsy’s listing instructions.
- Choose the item type and category. Make clear whether the buyer will receive a physical card or a digital file.
- Add accurate media. Etsy’s current listing guidance allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing. Show the actual item and relevant details rather than relying on a decorative mockup alone.
- Write a specific title and description. State what the item is and include useful details without repetitive wording or subjective filler. Describe the occasion or recipient, dimensions, materials, finish, inside message, envelope, and whether the listing is for one card or a set.
- Set tags and price. Etsy allows up to 13 tags. Use relevant terms that accurately describe the card, and price it using your full cost worksheet.
- Enter quantity, processing, and shipping information. Give realistic production and dispatch expectations. For custom work, say what can be personalized and set limits for revisions or text length.
- Review and publish. Check that the photos, description, item type, price, and fulfillment details all match what the buyer will receive.
Etsy’s Seller Policy, effective July 9, 2026, says listings must accurately represent how an item was made, by whom, and where it ships from. Its rules cover made, designed, handpicked, or sourced items and require disclosure of relevant production partners. Etsy also says seller-designed work can be offered as a digital download or printed onto a physical item by a third party, with production partners disclosed. Read the live Etsy Seller Policy before publishing because platform rules can change.
Publish with clear expectations and rights
Credibility comes from a listing that matches the product and fulfills what it promises. Before publishing, check that:
