To make a leaf skeleton, soften the leaf’s fleshy tissue in a washing-soda solution, rinse it, then gently brush the pulp away to reveal the veins. Choose a sturdy, thick leaf and work carefully: overprocessing or hard scrubbing can break the vein network.
What you need
- A sturdy, heavy-textured leaf, such as magnolia, poplar, or palmetto
- Washing soda (sodium carbonate—not baking soda)
- Water and a heat-safe pan
- A shallow dish of cool water
- A soft brush and blunt tool or forceps for transferring the leaf
- Eye and skin protection, plus adult supervision when heating or handling the solution
The Missouri Botanical Garden’s student activity uses sodium carbonate to soften leaf tissue before brushing. Its instructions warn that sodium carbonate can irritate skin and eyes. See the Missouri Botanical Garden activity.
How to make a leaf skeleton with washing soda
- Choose a suitable leaf. Start with a firm, thick-textured leaf. Thin, delicate leaves are more likely to tear during tissue removal. The University of Florida IFAS Extension lists magnolia, poplar, and palmetto among suitable heavy-textured choices.
- Prepare the solution. The Missouri Botanical Garden activity specifies half a liter of water and 4¼ teaspoons of sodium carbonate. Use washing soda, not baking soda; they are different compounds.
- Heat and soften the leaf. Heat the solution until it simmers, then hold the leaves at temperature for about 30 minutes, as the activity directs. That time is specific to its classroom recipe, not a guaranteed setting for every leaf. Avoid splashes and follow the product label.
- Transfer and rinse. Move the leaf carefully into cool water using a blunt tool or forceps. Rinsing helps loosen the softened tissue and makes the leaf easier to handle.
- Brush away the pulp. In the shallow dish, use a soft brush with light strokes to remove the green tissue. Support the leaf and work gradually; stop if veins begin to lift or tear. Do not scrape aggressively.
- Dry the skeleton. Lift it gently onto drying paper and allow it to dry flat. If it is fragile, avoid pulling it by a vein or edge.
For the source-specific quantities and process, consult the Missouri Botanical Garden activity.

Which method should you use?
| Approach | Published instructions | Best fit and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Washing soda | The Missouri Botanical Garden activity uses half a liter of water with 4¼ teaspoons sodium carbonate, simmering for about 30 minutes, followed by cool-water transfer and gentle brushing. | A straightforward classroom-style craft method. Sodium carbonate can irritate skin and eyes; use protection and adult supervision. |
| Lye treatment | The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes boiling leaves for 40 minutes in one quart of water with two tablespoons of lye, then rinsing in cold water and carefully scraping or brushing away pulp. | A caustic-chemical procedure, not a casual substitute for a child’s home activity. Use only with appropriate expertise and supervision. |
| Specimen preparation | The Government Museum Chennai handbook describes a more involved process using washing soda and calcium hydroxide, repeated gentle tissue removal, and drying between glass sheets. | Specialist botanical preservation context rather than a default household recipe. |
The University of Florida IFAS Extension’s instructions are in Drying and Preserving Plant Materials for Decorative Uses. The Chennai handbook is Hand Book on Preservation of Botanical Specimens. The sources do not establish one recipe as best for every leaf or setting.
How to lighten a finished leaf skeleton
Bleaching is optional. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes immersing the skeleton for two hours in a solution of one quart of water and two tablespoons of household bleach, then rinsing and drying it. Treat those amounts and that duration as the extension’s specific instructions, and follow the bleach product label; do not mix bleach with other chemicals.

Safety and troubleshooting
- Protect eyes and skin. Sodium carbonate can irritate both. Keep the solution from splashing, and follow the product label.
- Supervise heating and chemical handling. Nagoya City Science Museum advises consulting a science teacher for chemical methods, and The Huntington labels its chemical step for adults only. Keep children away from hot liquid and have an adult manage the solution.
- If the leaf breaks apart, it may have been too delicate, treated too long, or brushed too forcefully. Try a sturdier leaf and gentler strokes rather than increasing pressure.
- If tissue remains, continue brushing lightly while the leaf is supported. The sources do not establish a universal extra treatment time; avoid extending chemical exposure simply to force a result.
- Dispose of the solution responsibly. Disposal guidance depends on the product formulation and local rules; the cited sources do not provide a universal disposal procedure. Follow the product label and local requirements.
For cautions about chemical methods, see the Osaka Museum of Natural History museum Q&A and The Huntington’s leaf-skeleton activity.
