Make a tiny washboard ornament from a 6 cm by 4 cm panel, metallic foil or aluminum tape, and a simple craft-stick frame. Press parallel grooves into the metal surface, add a small laundry graphic, and glue on a hanging loop. The result works on a Christmas tree, in a miniature laundry scene, or as a small handmade gift tag.
This project follows the construction described by Michelle in A Crafty Mix’s December 4, 2017 tutorial. Her estimate is that the ornament can be made in under an hour; that is her personal estimate rather than an independently timed result. The dimensions, materials, and sequence below retain the practical details of that project while allowing for the supplies you already have.

What the finished ornament is—and is not
The ornament is a shallow decorative panel, not a working washing tool. A craft-foam or cardboard rectangle forms the body. Foil or aluminum tape gives it a silvery face, and a rolled rebar fragment or long screw creates the raised-and-recessed appearance associated with a washboard. Small sticks build a border around the panel. A laundry-themed picture and a string at the back complete the decoration.
If you are shopping for a ready-made miniature instead, a separate 1:12-scale wooden dollhouse washboard listing measures 1 inch by 2¼ inches. That is a finished accessory for a dollhouse scene, not a required material or substitute for making this ornament yourself.

Materials and size
| Item | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Craft foam sheet | Lightweight panel | The named base material in the tutorial. |
| Cardboard | Alternative panel | The tutorial explicitly permits cardboard when foam is unavailable. |
| Aluminum tape or tin foil | Metallic washboard face | The author notes that foil adheres well and is waterproof in this project; treat that as a project-specific observation, not a universal product specification. |
| Rebar fragment or long screw | Texture tool | Rolling it firmly over the foil makes the grooves. |
| Toothpicks, skewers, or small ice-cream sticks | Border and optional shelf | Choose pieces that can be cut cleanly to the panel’s scale. |
| Scissors | Cutting foam, cardboard, foil, and paper | Use a blade that gives you clean, controlled cuts. |
| Glue | Attaching foil, paper, frame pieces, shelf, and string | Use a craft adhesive suitable for the surfaces you are joining. |
| Small laundry printable | Decorative label or image | The tutorial used a reduced laundry graphic from The Graphics Fairy; any appropriately licensed miniature graphic can serve the same purpose. |
| String | Hanging loop | Use a thin cord that fits the scale and the ornament’s weight. |
Michelle’s panels are approximately 6 cm by 4 cm (2½ by 1½ inches). Keep that proportion if you want the same look, or enlarge it for a larger tree ornament. Work from the panel size when reducing the graphic and cutting the frame so the parts remain consistent.

| Consideration | Craft foam | Cardboard |
|---|---|---|
| When it makes sense | When you already have a thin, clean sheet and want a lightweight panel. | When you have packaging or scrap card available and want to use existing material. |
| Rigidity | Flexible; a very soft sheet may need careful handling while the foil is pressed. | Usually more rigid, though the exact stiffness depends on the card you choose. |
| Foil application | Press gently so the surface stays flat. | A firm surface can make rolling the grooves easier, but rough or dusty card can affect adhesion. |
| What the tutorial establishes | Named material, with no controlled thickness or performance specification. | Explicitly stated substitute, with no controlled comparison against foam. |
Neither option is objectively better on the evidence available. Pick the one that gives you a clean rectangle, accepts your adhesive, and is easy to cut accurately.
Prepare the panel and graphic
1. Cut the base
Cut one rectangle approximately 6 cm by 4 cm. Keep the edges square; a crooked base makes every later frame piece look misaligned. If you are using cardboard from a package, remove loose fibers and flatten any curl before proceeding.
2. Reduce the laundry image
Scale a laundry-related printable so it fits inside the future stick border, leaving a narrow margin around it. Print or copy several small versions if you are unsure which size will look balanced. Cut the chosen image into a neat rectangle before applying glue.

Build the miniature washboard
3. Apply the metallic face
Cover the front of the foam or cardboard with aluminum tape or tin foil. Work from one edge toward the other, smoothing as you go to reduce trapped air. If you are using foil, press it down with a clean fingertip or a soft, flat object instead of dragging across it; a sharp tool can tear the thin metal.
Trim the excess around the panel. Leave the back as flat as possible because that is where the hanging loop will be attached. If a corner lifts, lift only that section, add a small amount of adhesive, and press it flat while it sets.
4. Impress the washboard ribs
Place the covered panel on a firm, protected work surface. Roll a piece of rebar or a long screw firmly across the foil in straight, parallel passes. Start at one edge and work across the panel so the grooves remain consistent. The goal is a repeated ribbed texture, not deep cuts through the face.

Make a light test pass near an edge first. If the indentation is too faint, repeat with slightly more pressure; if the foil begins to split, reduce the pressure and check that the tool’s edge is free of burrs. Keep the direction of every pass the same for a tidy miniature surface.
5. Add the laundry graphic
Glue the reduced image to the textured panel after the foil has been secured. Place it where the frame will not cover important details. Press from the center outward to remove bubbles, then allow the adhesive to set before handling the panel repeatedly.
6. Cut and attach the frame
Measure the top, bottom, and side lengths against the panel rather than cutting all pieces from a guessed dimension. Cut toothpicks, skewers, or ice-cream sticks to fit, then dry-fit the pieces around the edges. When the corners meet cleanly, glue the border in place one piece at a time.
Small sticks can spring out of position while the glue is wet. Hold each piece steady for the adhesive’s recommended setting time, or use temporary low-tack tape on the outside of the frame. Wipe away squeeze-out before it dries; dried glue is especially visible on a tiny ornament.

7. Add the optional shelf
For the variation shown in the tutorial, cut a very short strip from an ice-cream stick and attach it near the lower portion of the frame as a tiny shelf. Dry-fit it with a miniature bottle, folded cloth, or other prop before gluing if you are building a laundry vignette. Keep the shelf shallow enough that it does not pull the ornament forward on the tree.
8. Attach the hanging loop
Cut a length of string, fold it into a loop, and glue or otherwise secure both ends to the back. Position the attachment near the upper center so the washboard hangs level. Let the adhesive cure fully before lifting the ornament by the loop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the tiny ribs look even
- Use a guide: Lightly mark the intended direction on the back or on a removable paper mask, not on the visible foil.
- Keep the tool perpendicular: A skewed rebar fragment or screw produces diagonal grooves and uneven spacing.
- Overlap passes slightly: Small gaps between passes can look like accidental scratches rather than a continuous washboard surface.
- Stop before the metal breaks: Several moderate passes are safer than one extremely forceful roll.
- Protect the finished face: Once textured, set the panel on a clean sheet of paper while you prepare the graphic and frame.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Foil wrinkles before texturing | The covering was applied with slack or pressed down unevenly. | Peel back only the affected section, smooth from the center toward the edge, and re-adhere it. |
| Grooves are barely visible | Too little pressure or a tool with a rounded, smooth edge. | Make another controlled pass on a firm surface; do not force the tool hard enough to tear the foil. |
| Foil splits | Excessive pressure, a sharp burr, or repeated rolling over one spot. | Trim the damaged area if it will be hidden by the frame, or replace the face covering and roll more gently. |
| The graphic lifts at a corner | Insufficient adhesive or a dusty surface. | Press the corner flat with a clean tool and add a small amount of suitable glue. |
| Frame pieces do not meet | Lengths were cut before checking the actual panel. | Trim one piece at a time after a dry fit; tiny gaps are less noticeable when kept to the back or a lower corner. |
| The ornament hangs crooked | The loop is off-center or its two ends are at different heights. | Reposition the loop before the adhesive fully cures, or add a new loop centered behind the top frame. |
| Cardboard bends | The card is thin, damp from glue, or being flexed while wet. | Use less adhesive, support the panel on a flat surface, and wait for it to dry before adding the frame. |
Finishing ideas for a tree or miniature scene
Keep the frame natural
Leave the toothpicks or sticks unpainted for a warm wood look. This keeps attention on the ribbed metal face and suits a rustic laundry vignette.
Paint the border
Once the frame is firmly attached, add a thin coat of craft paint to the wood only. Mask the foil if necessary, and avoid saturating the cardboard base. A single color creates a clean toy-like finish; a lightly varied coat can suggest aged wood without hiding the texture.

Make a coordinated set
Use the same panel dimensions and frame style, but vary the laundry graphics. A group of two or three washboards can hang together on a tree or sit above a miniature shelf. Keep the string lengths consistent if you want the set to hang at one level.

Place the ornament beside a miniature basket, folded fabric, or the optional shelf. Because the project is shallow, it can serve as a wall prop in a small room box as well as a hanging decoration. Remove the string if you want a permanent wall-mounted piece.
Work safely and protect the finished piece
- Handle rebar fragments, long screws, scissors, and freshly cut sticks carefully; cover sharp ends while you work.
- Cut on a protected surface and keep fingers out of the path of the blade and rolling tool.
- Use adhesive with ventilation appropriate to its label and keep it away from children or pets while wet.
- Store finished ornaments flat or in a shallow box so the foil is not crushed and the frame does not snag other decorations.
- Before hanging, tug the loop gently to confirm that both ends are secure.
When this project is the right choice
Make the handmade version when you want a personalized ornament, already have scrap foam or cardboard, or need several pieces in a matching style. Choose a ready-made dollhouse accessory only when you specifically need a 1:12-scale prop with no construction time. The handmade panel is deliberately simple: its character comes from the pressed metal texture, the tiny frame, and the image you choose.
