To make a quilted hexagon placemat, appliqué fabric hexagons onto a top, layer it with batting and backing, stitch the shapes through all three layers, then square and bind the piece. One documented example finishes at 18 by 12 inches; its materials and measurements are a useful starting point, not a universal placemat standard.
Choose a construction method
For a scrap-friendly placemat with separate hexagon shapes, folded appliqué is a practical starting point. Erin Hentzel, author of the AccuQuilt tutorial published October 26, 2015, describes the project as “a great way to use scraps and a great quilt pattern for beginners!” The project uses a holiday tree arrangement, but you can adapt the colors, spacing, and arrangement for an everyday contemporary look.
| Method | What it involves | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Folded, basted appliqué | Turn the fabric edges around a template, baste and press the shape, then stitch it onto the quilt sandwich. | Turned edges and makers comfortable with some hand preparation; requires templates. |
| Fused raw-edge appliqué | Fuse web to the fabric, cut hexagons, press them onto the top, and stitch around their edges. | A faster preparation route, as described by the tutorial author; requires fusible web and an iron. |
| Stack-n-whack repeated-print hexagon | Align a large-scale print repeat, cut triangles using a 60-degree ruler, sew them into a kaleidoscopic hexagon, then quilt and bind. | A motif built from a repeated print rather than separate appliqué shapes. The American Quilter’s Society project gives this method. |
| Embroidered motif | Combine a central fabric panel and borders with machine embroidery, batting, backing, and binding. | A project where machine embroidery is part of the design; see Advanced Embroidery Designs’ placemat project. |
The steps below follow the folded-appliqué approach, with the fused option noted where it differs.

Gather fabric and supplies
For one 18-by-12-inch finished placemat, the AccuQuilt example specifies:
#1 Best Overall
- Scraps or fat quarters for the hexagons.
- One fat quarter of natural linen or solid quilting cotton for the top.
- One fat quarter for the backing.
- Batting cut to 18.5 by 12.5 inches.
- 75 inches of binding.
- A 1-inch-side hexagon template or cardstock templates; a cutter and compatible hexagon die are optional alternatives.
- Clips, a hand-sewing needle and thread for basting, a fabric glue stick, matching thread, pearl cotton embroidery floss, and a wide-eye hand needle for the floss.
The listed top, batting, and backing dimensions leave material around the finished edge for squaring and binding. The example calls for an 18-by-12-inch top, 18.5-by-12.5-inch batting, and 19-by-13-inch backing. These are the tutorial’s dimensions; check your own binding method and desired seam allowance before cutting.
Cut and prepare the hexagons
Folded appliqué
- Cut 3.5-inch-wide strips or 3.5-inch squares from your scraps, then cut the hexagons using a template or cutting tool.
- Place fabric around each template, fold the edges over it, and clip the corners as needed to manage bulk.
- Baste the folded edges, press the shape, then remove the template. If the folds do not hold crisp edges or corners, the tutorial suggests starch or a starch alternative.
Fused raw-edge appliqué
- Fuse 2.5-inch squares of fusible web to the fabric, following the fusible product’s directions.
- Trim the fabric and cut the hexagons with the smallest die shape.
- Arrange and fuse the shapes to the top according to the fusible product’s instructions.
Arrange the design on the top
- Find the center of the fabric top and lay out the prepared hexagons, adjusting their spacing and colors until the arrangement looks balanced.
- Secure the folded shapes with a fabric glue stick. For fused shapes, follow the web product’s pressing directions instead.
- If adapting the tutorial’s tree layout, note that it uses ten hexagons plus a trunk hexagon, places the trunk centered 1.5 inches from the lower edge, and leaves a 1/4-inch gap between hexagons. Those measurements belong to that particular arrangement; choose placement to suit your own motif.
Layer, stitch, and quilt
- Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top. Baste the layers with adhesive spray or pins so they stay aligned while you sew.
- Stitch around each hexagon 1/8 inch from its edge, sewing through the top, batting, and backing.
- For the tutorial’s additional hand quilting detail, use pearl cotton to make a large stitch around the placemat perimeter, 3/4 inch from the raw edge.
Square and bind the placemat
Square the quilted piece, then bind the raw perimeter using your preferred binding method. If you want a different construction reference, the American Quilter’s Society stack-n-whack tutorial describes mitered binding at 120-degree corners for its hexagon placemat design.
