You make the swirl on water, not directly on the glass. Drop nail polish colors one at a time onto the water so they float, pull a wooden stick through the rings to draw the pattern, then gently dip or roll a clean glass through it. The polish dries quickly, so have the glass ready before you open the bottles.
Use the technique for a decorative vase, paperweight, or display glass. If you use a wine glass, cover its entire drinking edge with painter’s tape and keep polish, glue, and the finished design away from any surface that will touch food or drink. The available craft instructions do not establish that nail polish on glass is food-contact safe, dishwasher safe, or suitable for repeated drinking use.

What this technique does
This process is often called water marbling, marbleizing, or hydropainting. Nail polish forms a thin film on the water’s surface. Each new drop spreads into a ring around the previous one; dragging a skewer or stick through those rings bends them into waves, spirals, and feathered shapes. When the glass passes through the film, the pattern transfers to the outside.
The transfer is a one-pass print. Once the polish touches the glass, you cannot move that same section back into place without disturbing the pattern. Plan the area you want to decorate, work with a small amount of polish, and accept that every dip will produce a slightly different design.

Materials and the best blank for your project
Basic supplies
- A clean, dry glass object such as a vase, small decorative glass, paperweight, or mug
- Nail polish in two or more colors
- A disposable pan, bucket, or other container wide enough for the object
- Water; the Art Gallery of South Australia’s mug project uses warm water, but the reviewed instructions do not establish one universally best temperature
- A wooden skewer, toothpick, craft stick, or similarly narrow disposable tool
- Painter’s tape for masking a wine-glass rim
- Paper, cardboard, or a drop cloth to protect the work surface
- Paper towels and a waste container for drips and hardened polish
- Optional PVA glue if you are making a purely decorative object and want to follow the sealing step described by the arts-and-crafts guides
Use a container you do not need for food preparation. Once polish hardens on the water or sides, it can be difficult to remove completely. A disposable pan makes cleanup and replacement easier.
Choose the object before mixing colors

A smooth, nonporous exterior gives you the most predictable transfer. Avoid starting with a heavily textured or ridged surface; the pattern may bridge grooves or leave uncovered spots.
Prepare the workspace and glass
- Protect the work area. Cover the table with paper, cardboard, or a drop cloth. Keep the pan stable so a bump does not send polish onto the table or your hands.
- Set up ventilation. Work where air moves well, and read the warnings on every nail-product label. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises good ventilation when using nail products and warns that some products can catch fire near a flame or other heat source.
- Clean the glass. Rinse away dust and oils, then dry it completely. Water droplets or residue can keep the polish from adhering evenly.
- Mask any drinking edge. For a wine glass, wrap painter’s tape over the entire mouth and press the edge down firmly. Do not rely on a narrow strip that leaves part of the rim exposed.
- Arrange colors with caps loosened. Open the bottles or loosen their caps before you begin the water pattern. You will have only a short working window once the polish reaches the water.
- Fill the pan. Add enough water for the section of glass you intend to decorate. Leave room to lower the object without overflowing the container.
Keep the glass, stick, tape, towels, and waste container within reach. Searching for a tool while the polish is setting is a common reason a pattern becomes ragged.
Make the swirling pattern on the water
1. Add a small first drop
Hold the polish bottle close to the water and release one small drop near the center. The Laconia Public Library instructions say the polish should bead on the surface. A small drop gives you room to add rings and is easier to control than a large pour.

2. Build concentric rings
Add the next color into or near the first ring, one drop at a time. Alternate colors to create contrast. Start with less polish than you think you need; the Mary Frances Trust instructions caution that a heavy amount can make the result messy, and the cited guides note that fast pouring can make polish sink.
Keep the bottle close to the surface and pour slowly. If a drop falls from too high, it can break through the film. If the color immediately sinks, stop adding more until you adjust the drop size and height.

3. Draw the swirl
Insert a wooden skewer, toothpick, or stick into the floating rings and pull it through once to create a curved stripe. Make additional passes in different directions for a feathered or spiral effect. Wipe the tool between passes if thick polish begins to collect on it; otherwise you may drag a clump instead of a clean line.
Do not spend time perfecting the pattern after it begins to skin over. The Laconia handout specifically warns that dried polish loses its ability to swirl, and the Art Gallery of South Australia guide likewise calls for quick swirling and dipping.

4. Check the pattern before dipping
Look for an unbroken film large enough to cover the part of the glass you want decorated. If the center has holes, add a tiny drop and make one quick pass with the stick. Do not keep adding layers indefinitely: excessive polish can become heavy, sink, or transfer as a thick, uneven patch.
Transfer the swirl to glass
- Choose your entry angle. Decide which side of the glass should receive the strongest part of the design. For a rounded object, plan whether you will dip straight down or roll the surface through the film.
- Lower gently. Dip or roll the clean, dry glass through the floating pattern in one controlled motion. Avoid dropping it abruptly, which can push the polish aside and create a blank spot.
- Keep the masked rim out of the design. On a wine glass, the tape should cover the drinking edge before the object enters the water. Do not let polish creep onto the tape’s inside edge or onto the area your lips would touch.
- Lift without scraping. Raise the glass slowly and let excess water run back into the pan. Do not wipe the wet polish immediately; rubbing at this stage can smear the transferred lines.
- Set it on a protected surface. Place the glass where it will not touch another object while wet. Follow the arts-and-crafts guides’ instruction to let the design dry, with one guide specifying overnight drying.
If you want to cover another section, make a fresh pattern rather than dragging the partly dried glass back through the same water. Before starting the next object, remove hardened polish from the water. A film left behind can break into flakes and mark the next transfer.
Drying, sealing, and what the finish can withstand
Let the film harden undisturbed
Leave the object alone until the polish is dry. The Art Gallery of South Australia and Peterlee Town Council craft instructions both include a drying period, and the former specifies drying overnight. Exact drying time depends on the amount of polish, room conditions, and the object’s surface; do not handle it merely because the top looks dull.
Optional PVA glue for decorative pieces
The Art Gallery of South Australia and Peterlee guides mention brushing PVA glue over the dried pattern as a sealer. Treat that as a craft-finishing suggestion for a display object. The reviewed instructions do not establish that PVA glue over nail polish is safe on food-contact surfaces, resistant to immersion, or durable in a dishwasher.

Hand-wash only when preserving a wine-glass design
The Laconia Public Library handout recommends hand-washing the decorated glass to preserve the design. Use that as a care instruction, not as proof that the finish is suitable for drinking. Keep the polish and any glue on exterior, non-contact areas, and use the item decoratively unless a product manufacturer provides specific food-contact and durability certification.
Troubleshoot the pattern while you work

Color and pattern decisions that improve control
Limit the palette at first
Two or three contrasting colors make the rings easy to see and help you learn how quickly your polish spreads. Similar shades can produce a subtle effect, but they are harder to distinguish while you are deciding where to draw the stick.
Use a deliberate movement plan
Pulling the stick from the center toward the edge creates a radiating pattern. Curving it around the rings creates a spiral. Alternating short pulls on opposite sides produces a feathered look. These are movement choices, not guarantees: polish viscosity and the speed of the film can change the result from one batch to the next.
Match the pattern to the object
On a narrow vase, a vertical section may be easier to control than attempting to cover the entire circumference at once. On a mug, decide whether the handle should remain plain so you can hold it without touching wet polish. For a wine glass, keep the design below the taped rim and away from the drinking area.

Clean up without spreading polish
- Remove floating scraps first. Lift hardened pieces from the water before emptying the pan or beginning another object.
- Keep used tools separate. Set the skewer and towels on the protected surface rather than on clean work materials.
- Follow product labels. Dispose of polish and cleanup materials according to the nail-product label and local waste rules.
- Ventilate until odors clear. Keep the area away from flames, sparks, and heat sources while products are open or drying.
- Remove painter’s tape after the design has set. Peel it back slowly so you do not lift the edge of the pattern.
Safety and use limits
Nail polish is a solvent-based nail product, not a glassware coating tested for eating or drinking. Read every label, follow its warnings, and use the product with good ventilation, as advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Keep bottles and wet polish away from flames, candles, stoves, heaters, and other heat sources because some nail products can catch fire.
Wear clothing and protect the work surface from splashes. Keep children and pets away from the open bottles and the water pan. If polish contacts skin or eyes, follow the product label’s first-aid directions rather than improvising with household chemicals.
For the safest project framing, decorate the outside of a vase, display glass, or other object that will not hold food or drink. Do not describe a nail-polish-marbleized drinking surface as food-safe, dishwasher-safe, or durable under repeated use when those properties have not been established by the product maker.
