Yes, you can combine stain and paint on a dresser, but only after matching each finish to the surface underneath. Conventional penetrating stain needs clean, absorbent wood with the old finish removed; paint can cover prepared wood, veneer, and laminate when you clean, scuff-sand, and prime appropriately. Identify the material first, then treat stained and painted areas as separate finishing systems.

The most durable makeover comes from careful preparation, a hidden-area stain test, compatible products, and enough drying and curing time for the dresser’s actual use.
Start by identifying the dresser surface
Do not choose stain or paint from appearance alone. A dresser may be solid wood, wood veneer, previously painted wood, or laminate, and those surfaces tolerate very different preparation.

Solid wood
Solid wood can usually accept a penetrating stain after the existing coating is removed. Look at an unfinished edge, the back of a drawer front, or a removed hardware hole: end grain and continuous grain patterns are clues, but they are not proof by themselves. If you cannot verify the construction, use the least aggressive preparation that will achieve your chosen finish.
Veneer
Veneer is real wood, but its top layer may be thin. Aggressive stripping or sanding can cut through it and expose a different substrate. The reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish the veneer thickness or condition of any particular dresser, so inspect an inconspicuous spot and sand cautiously. A painted finish is often the safer route when the veneer is damaged, very thin, or already uneven.
Previously painted wood
A sound, painted surface is generally handled as a paint-preparation project. To use conventional penetrating stain, the old paint and any other finish must be removed completely so stain can enter the wood evenly. If stripping would damage the wood or reveal extensive filler, repainting can deliver a more predictable result.
Laminate
Laminate is a printed or bonded surface rather than an absorbent wood face. Sherwin-Williams’ laminate-furniture guidance supports painting laminate with cleaning, low-grit scuff sanding, bonding primer, and two paint coats; it does not present conventional penetrating stain as a laminate finish. Treat a glossy, manufactured top as a paint project unless you have a coating specifically designed for that material.
Choose stain, paint, or a combination
| Decision | Stain | Paint |
|---|---|---|
| Surface requirement | Suitable wood with the old finish removed for conventional penetrating stain. | Clean, dry, prepared surface; the cited furniture guides recommend primer. |
| Appearance | Changes wood color while leaving grain visible. | Creates an opaque color and can cover prepared laminate. |
| Preparation effort | Stripping and progressive sanding; detailed furniture can take substantial time. | Cleaning, scuff sanding, filling defects, and priming. |
| Typical failure | Blotchy color from uneven absorption, or sticky stain when drying is inadequate. | Poor adhesion over dirt, gloss, dust, or an unsuitable primer. |
| Protection | Use a compatible topcoat selected for wear, moisture, and the intended sheen. | Use furniture-suitable paint and follow its cure directions; there is no universal topcoat schedule. |
When a two-tone makeover makes sense
Stain broad, absorbent wood areas such as a top, drawer fronts, or legs, and paint parts that are repaired, veneered, or laminate. Plan the boundary before starting: a crisp line at a drawer edge or frame is easier to protect than a transition in the middle of a panel. Each finish still needs its own preparation and compatible products; a painted area is not automatically ready because a neighboring area was stripped.
Gather only the supplies your finish requires
- Interior wood stain and a compatible protective finish for areas that will be stained.
- Sandpaper or sanding blocks chosen for the material; the cited furniture guidance uses staged grits rather than one paper for every job.
- Lint-free rags, stain applicators, a vacuum, and tack cloths.
- Chemical stripper when appropriate for the old coating and the dresser’s details.
- Mild cleaner or suitable degreaser, clean water for rinsing when the label requires it, and clean drying cloths.
- Wood filler for dents and holes, plus primer suited to wood, veneer, or laminate.
- Furniture-suitable paint, brushes for edges, and a roller for broad flat areas.
- Gloves, eye protection, a properly selected respirator, and containment materials for dust and drips.
- Containers or labeled bags for hardware and screws. KILZ advises keeping each screw with its original hardware to reduce stress when the pulls are reattached: KILZ dresser project instructions.
A paint-only project does not need stain, and a laminate dresser is not a conventional stain candidate. Set up in a ventilated area and follow each product label for surface compatibility, ventilation, disposal, recoat time, and cure time.

Prepare before removing a single finish
- Remove drawers and hardware where practical. Label drawers and place every screw with its pull or knob.
- Map the finish plan. Mark which surfaces will be stained and which will be painted, and photograph the hardware layout for reference.
- Inspect for loose veneer, swollen edges, deep dents, grease, and previous repairs. Stabilize or fill defects before final finishing.
- Ventilate the workspace and isolate it from children, pets, food, and clean household surfaces.
- If sanding or scraping old paint, treat the dust as potentially hazardous. Sherwin-Williams warns that disturbing old paint can create lead dust or fumes and calls for appropriate respiratory protection, containment, and cleanup. That warning does not establish that your dresser contains lead; determine the risk for your specific piece and follow local requirements.
How to prepare and stain wood sections
Sherwin-Williams summarizes its approach this way: “The secret to a stunning stained finish lies in meticulous surface preparation.” Its complete process is described in How to Stain Wood Furniture and Preparing to Stain. Adapt the starting grit to the material; do not use the same aggressive sanding plan on a thin veneer.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Remove the old coating
Strip paint, varnish, or lacquer according to the stripper manufacturer’s instructions. Chemical stripping can be effective on carved or intricate furniture where sanding alone would erase detail. Scrape softened coating without gouging the wood, and keep residue out of joints and drawer tracks.
2. Clean and dry the bare surface
After stripping, remove residue and allow the wood to dry. Sherwin-Williams describes wiping with a lint-free cloth and mineral spirits, then allowing about an hour to dry; the product label and the wood’s condition control the actual timing. Do not sand or stain while solvent odor, dampness, or residue remains.
3. Sand with the grain in stages
For rough or stubborn areas, the Sherwin-Williams furniture guide lists 80 grit, followed by 120 grit and then 220 grit. Vacuum or otherwise remove dust between grits, and stop when the surface is uniformly smooth rather than sanding indefinitely. On veneer, begin finer and use light pressure so you do not cut through the face.
4. Test the color and absorption
Apply the chosen stain to a hidden area or a matching scrap. Let the test dry for at least 24 hours before judging the color. The test shows whether the wood absorbs evenly and how dark the result becomes when excess is wiped off. Record the applicator, wipe timing, and number of coats so you can reproduce the result on visible parts.

5. Stain manageable sections
Work with the grain in sections you can keep wet and visually consistent. Apply enough stain to wet the surface, then wipe excess according to the test and product directions. Longer penetration generally produces a darker result, but do not extend the wet time beyond what the label allows. Blend overlaps while the stain is workable.

6. Allow drying, then protect
Sherwin-Williams describes 24–48 hours between stain coats; humidity, temperature, wood species, and the product can change that interval. Do not add another coat while the surface feels tacky. Once the stain is fully dry, apply a compatible topcoat in thin layers and observe the finish label’s recoat and cure requirements.
How to prepare and paint wood or veneer sections
For an ordinary painted dresser, Sherwin-Williams’ sequence is wash, dry, lightly sand, remove dust, fill defects, prime, paint, and reinstall hardware. The steps appear in How to Paint an Old Dresser. Benjamin Moore likewise recommends cleaning and rinsing, 100–150-grit scuff sanding, filling defects, and priming in Paint Indoor Furniture.
1. Degrease and rinse as directed
Wash fingerprints, polish, wax, and cooking residue from the surface. Rinse when the cleaner requires it, then let the dresser dry completely. Paint cannot bond reliably to a nearly invisible film of wax or cleaner.

Use light, even pressure to remove gloss and create a mechanical key. Benjamin Moore gives 100–150 grit as a furniture scuff-sanding range. Remove all sanding dust before filler or primer; dust left in corners can become a visible adhesion failure.
3. Fill and spot-repair
Press wood filler into dents, holes, and damaged edges, allow it to dry, and sand it flush. Recheck repaired areas under side lighting. Deep structural damage, loose veneer, or swollen particleboard may need repair before cosmetic finishing.
4. Prime for the actual substrate
Choose a primer labeled for the surface and the paint system. The Sherwin-Williams dresser instructions name at least two hours of primer drying, but the current product label controls. Lightly sand only if the primer directions call for it, then remove the dust.

5. Apply paint without overworking it
Use a brush for edges, profiles, and corners and a roller for broad flat faces. Lay off in the direction that looks best when dry, maintain a wet edge, and follow the paint label for coat count and recoat timing. A thin, even coat is less likely to sag or trap brush marks than one heavy coat.

6. Reattach hardware after adequate handling strength
Wait until the paint is dry enough for careful handling, then reinstall each labeled pull and screw. Full cure can take longer than the surface’s dry-to-touch time, so protect the dresser from hard use, stacked objects, and damp cleaning until the label’s cure period has passed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Painting laminate requires a separate method
Laminate’s smooth face is an adhesion problem, not a staining problem. Sherwin-Williams’ procedure in How to Paint Laminate Furniture is:
- Remove residue and clean or degrease thoroughly.
- Sand with a low-grit paper such as 150 grit to remove shine and create texture without cutting through the printed layer.
- Dust the surface completely.
- Apply a bonding primer labeled for laminate.
- After the primer hardens, sand lightly if directed and remove dust.
- Apply two paint coats, observing the product’s drying and recoat instructions.
Do not carry a wood-stain schedule onto laminate. If the laminate is lifting, swollen, or damaged at edges, resolve that condition first; paint alone will not restore a failing bond.
Protect the finished dresser for its real use
Protection should match wear, moisture, appearance, and ventilation limits. Sherwin-Williams describes polyurethane as a durable choice for high-traffic surfaces, lacquer as a high-sheen finish that requires careful application and ventilation, and varnish as offering moisture and UV protection. Apply thin coats and use the finish label for recoat and cure times.
Test the topcoat on a hidden stained area first. Some products can alter the stain’s color or sheen, and a coating intended for one paint system may not be compatible with another. Painted furniture does not have one universal topcoat requirement in the cited guides, so follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions rather than adding a random clear coat.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often
Blotchy stain
Uneven absorption, leftover finish, filler, or inconsistent sanding can create light and dark patches. Stop adding coats, let the surface dry, and compare the result with the hidden-area test. If the problem comes from remaining finish, the durable fix is to remove the coating and prepare the wood evenly; more stain usually makes the contrast darker, not more uniform.
Sticky or slow-drying stain
Excess product, cool or humid conditions, or insufficient wiping can leave a tacky film. Increase ventilation within the label’s safety limits, allow more drying time, and do not topcoat until the surface is dry. If the product instructions provide a cleanup or correction method, follow them rather than layering another finish over tackiness.
Paint that scratches or peels
Likely causes are grease, gloss, sanding dust, or a primer that does not suit the substrate. Remove loose coating, clean again, scuff-sand, and reprime the affected area with a bonding or surface-appropriate primer before repainting.

Heavy application, overworking partially dried paint, or an unsuitable tool can leave texture. Allow the coat to dry, sand lightly only as the product permits, remove dust, and apply a thinner, controlled coat. Do not chase marks while the paint is setting.
Stain or paint on the wrong section
Wipe a fresh spill according to the product label before it dries. Once cured, avoid aggressive sanding near a finished boundary; mask and protect adjacent surfaces before correcting the affected area.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the face absorbent wood, thin veneer, painted wood, or laminate?
- Can you remove the old finish without damaging the substrate?
- Do you want visible grain or an opaque color?
- Which surfaces will receive stain, and which will receive paint?
- Have you tested the stain for at least 24 hours in a hidden location?
- Are cleaner, primer, paint, stain, and topcoat compatible with each other?
- Can the dresser remain untouched through the stated dry and cure periods?
- Have you planned dust containment and lead-paint precautions before sanding?
When the answers are uncertain, paint is generally the more forgiving finish because it does not require uniform stain absorption. Choose stain when the wood is suitable, the old coating can be removed safely, and preserving grain is worth the additional preparation.
