To make basic paper clay at home, soak torn non-glossy paper in hot water, blend it into pulp, squeeze out excess water, then mix in craft glue, cornstarch, flour, and oil. Adjust the flour until the mixture is workable. This makes an air-drying craft clay; ceramic paper clay is a different material made by adding cellulose fiber to ceramic clay slip.
What you need for the beginner paper-clay recipe
The Peabody Essex Museum’s recycled-paper recipe is a practical starting point for hand-built craft pieces. Gather:
- Non-glossy paper
- Hot water for soaking
- 1/2 cup craft glue
- 3/4 cup cornstarch
- 3/4 cup white flour
- 1/4 cup vegetable, olive, or baby oil
Use a bowl and blender for preparing the pulp, plus a thin towel or paper-pulp strainer to remove excess water. The museum’s recipe and instructions are at Peabody Essex Museum’s paper clay activity.

How to make paper clay step by step
- Tear and soak the paper. Tear or shred non-glossy paper into small pieces. Cover it with hot water and leave it to soak overnight for best results.
- Blend the soaked paper. Blend the paper and soaking water until it becomes pulp.
- Squeeze out excess water. Put the pulp in a thin towel and squeeze until it is mostly flaky rather than saturated. Too much water makes the mixture harder to bring to a workable consistency.
- Mix in the binder and dry ingredients. Stir in the craft glue, then the cornstarch and flour, followed by the oil, in that order.
- Adjust the texture. Add flour gradually if the clay is sticky. If it becomes too dry or flaky while you sculpt, use a little water to bring it back to a workable texture.
Paper clay is paper fiber or pulp combined with a binder, so recipes can differ substantially. Measure ingredients and make small consistency adjustments rather than adding a large amount of flour or water at once.

| Recipe or material | Binder and measured ingredients | Best fit | Important handling note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peabody Essex Museum recipe | Craft glue, cornstarch, white flour, and oil; quantities are listed above. | Air-dry craft modeling from recycled paper. | Soak overnight, squeeze pulp until mostly flaky, and add flour slowly if sticky. The museum says, “This clay dries strong and is lightweight.” Source. |
| South Africa Department of Basic Education classroom variation | One roll of unscented, uncoloured single-ply toilet paper; 1 cup premixed joint compound; 3/4 cup PVA glue; 2 tablespoons mineral oil; 1/2 cup white flour. | Classroom modeling with a measured pulp quantity. | Saturate and squeeze out the paper, break it into small chunks, then measure 1 1/2 cups pulp. Mix the pulp and remaining ingredients at high speed until smooth and dough-like. Substitutions can change the consistency. Source. |
| RISD Nature Lab variation | 100 ml lightly strained wet paper pulp plus 15 ml methylcellulose. | Molding pulp around an armature or building up thin forms. | Press water out with a sponge after molding. Refrigerate slurry kept for later use to help avoid mold growth. Source. |
| Ceramic paper clay | Cellulose fiber added to prepared ceramic clay slip; household-craft recipe quantities do not apply. | Ceramic studio work where fiber can improve green strength, joining, and handling of lighter work. | It requires ceramic slip, mixing equipment, plaster bats, and appropriate studio safety controls. Some traditional paper fibers can develop mold if left overnight. Source. |
How to shape and dry homemade paper clay
Shape the clay by hand, over an armature, or in a mold. Keep the surface workable with small amounts of water, and avoid unnecessarily thick sections: thicker pieces hold more moisture and take longer to dry.
Drying depends on the recipe, moisture, and thickness. As a reference—not a universal drying time—RISD Nature Lab says its pulp-and-methylcellulose form takes about 4–7 days to dry completely. A layer around 1/4 inch thick may dry in about one day under that recipe’s conditions. Let your piece dry fully before painting or sealing it; the surface may feel dry before the thicker interior is ready.

Painting, sealing, and choosing a ready-made alternative
Once an air-dry piece is fully dry, you can paint or seal it. If you want a consistent, ready-to-use material instead of preparing pulp and adjusting a homemade mixture, Creative Paperclay says its paper clay air-hardens, is lightweight and durable, and can be painted after drying. Its manufacturer recommends protecting finished projects with lacquer or varnish. See Creative Paperclay’s product FAQ.

Safety when making and using paper clay
Follow the product labels for any materials you use, and use appropriate ventilation. Health Canada advises art teachers to control dust with wet mopping or a vacuum rather than sweeping, wash hands thoroughly, follow label-specified protective equipment, and keep harmful substances away from children. Its guidance is at Information for Art Class Teachers: Chemical Safety. Do not treat homemade paper clay as food-safe or as a toy for mouthing.
