You can make decorative handmade paper by blending dryer lint with recycled paper, then forming the pulp on a framed screen, pressing it with towels, and letting it dry. Use lint as part of a mixed-fiber pulp rather than relying on it alone: lint varies from load to load, and a papermaking specialist cautions that lint-only paper can be difficult to make.
What you need
- Dryer lint and recycled paper, such as plain paper or junk mail
- Hot water and a blender
- A deep tub large enough to dip your screen into
- A framed mesh screen, mold and deckle, or embroidery hoop with mesh
- Clean towels and a rolling pin, or your hands, for pressing
- Optional: cornstarch for sizing a batch with a lot of lint, plus thread, glitter, foil, or small plant parts for decoration
A mold and deckle is made to form sheets, but it is not essential. A framed mesh screen or mesh stretched in an embroidery hoop can work as a homemade alternative. CraftBits describes these options but does not provide comparative performance or price data, so choose based on what you have and the sheet size you want to make. CraftBits’ dryer-lint paper tutorial provides the process and tool alternatives.
Prepare and blend the pulp
For one standard sheet, CraftBits suggests about one cup of combined paper bits and lint. Its quantities are craft directions, not independently tested measurements; adjust the batch to the screen and tub you are using.
- Tear the paper and lint into pieces roughly one inch across. Cover them with hot water and soak for at least 30 minutes, up to 12 hours.
- Blend the soaked material with water into a smooth slurry. The tutorial suggests roughly one part combined paper and lint to four parts water. Work in short batches and do not overfill the blender.
- Partly fill the tub with clean water, then add the slurry. Stir to distribute the fibers; if the pulp settles, stir it back into suspension before forming each sheet. For a batch with a large proportion of lint, the tutorial suggests adding one tablespoon of cornstarch as sizing.
The paper-to-lint balance affects the result. Arnold Grummer’s papermaking FAQ advises adding lint to natural-fiber pulp rather than trying to make paper from lint alone. Read the papermaking FAQ.

This variety caters to different preferences and DIY art and craft projects
- 【Sturdiness & Durability Materials】: Caydo paper making frame kit is made of sturdy natural wood and mesh for the frames, and the sponge is made of wood pulp cotton, which has better water absorption. Note: The yarn mesh is not too elastic, so please do not use strong pressure during the process of making paper
- 【Easy to Use & Beginners Friendly】: The paper making kit includes clear instructions, making it beginner-friendly. The process is simple: 1.Place the mesh between two wooden frames of the same size. 2.Insert the frame (mesh-free side up) into prepared pulp. Add glitter or dried flowers if desired. Wait for even pulp coverage. 3.Remove, cover with absorbent paper, and sponge to absorb water. 4.Take the paper off the frame and sun-dry before use
- 【Value for Money】: The paper making kit contains 6 paper frames of 3 sizes A4 A5 A6 (each size frame has a fixed mesh screen), 6 mesh of 3 sizes, 6 absorbent paper of 3 sizes (2 for each size), and 1 sponge to meet your need for different sizes of paper. It is a cost-effective option for enjoying the papermaking process
Form a sheet on the screen
- Hold the screen with the frame uppermost. Stir the tub, lower the screen through the pulp, and move it gently side to side so fibers spread across the mesh.
- Lift the screen straight out and let water drain. If the coverage looks uneven, dip again and adjust the fibers before pressing.
- For decoration, place small additions such as thread, glitter, foil, or plant parts into the pulp rather than blending them. Lint and paper colors influence the finished shade; mixed colors may create gray or brown paper.
The screen is what supports the fibers as water drains and a sheet takes shape. A framed screen is therefore needed for this method, but it can be homemade rather than a purchased papermaking mold.
Press and dry the paper
- Gently press the wet sheet to remove excess water. Turn the screen over onto a clean towel, loosen a corner of the sheet, and transfer it to the towel.
- Cover the sheet with another towel and press or roll it with a rolling pin to draw out more water.
- Move the sheet to a drying rack or hang it on a line. CraftBits estimates drying can take up to three hours, depending on sheet thickness, temperature, and humidity; treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed drying time.
Adjust thickness and expectations
The Children’s Museum of South Dakota notes that sheet thickness depends on the proportion of pulp to water. Its paper-making activity offers that basic guidance; for this method, the amount of pulp you distribute across the screen also determines how much fiber collects in a sheet.

Dryer lint is a variable household mixture, and these sources do not establish the fiber composition of any particular load or measure the strength of the finished sheet. Treat the result as decorative craft paper rather than assuming it will be durable, archival, or suitable for formal writing.
