To make the leaf-stitch plastic-canvas placemat described by Wonderful DIY, gather one 9 × 12-inch sheet of 7-count plastic canvas, three spools of synthetic raffia, a large-eye needlepoint needle with a dull point, and scissors per placemat. Follow the linked CraftyPod directions for the leaf design’s stitch sequence; the materials list alone is not a complete pattern.
Materials for one placemat
- One 9 × 12-inch sheet of 7-count plastic canvas
- Three spools of synthetic raffia
- One needlepoint needle with a large eye and dull point
- Scissors
These quantities come from the project’s stated per-placemat materials list. The 9 × 12-inch measurement describes the canvas sheet, not the finished placemat. See the Wonderful DIY project page, which attributes the directions to Diane at CraftyPod, for the design and its specific instructions.
How to follow the placemat directions
- Gather the listed materials for each placemat you plan to make.
- Use the CraftyPod directions linked on the project page to determine how to cut the canvas and work the leaf motif. The available materials reference does not give the stitch order, shaping, or finishing sequence, so those details should not be guessed from general plastic-canvas techniques.
Plastic-canvas stitching and edges
General plastic-canvas guides explain how common stitches work, but they do not establish the particular sequence used for this leaf-stitch placemat. Annie’s Attic describes continental stitch as a basic filling stitch worked diagonally over one square. It distinguishes that from overcasting, which wraps and covers a raw canvas edge, and whipstitching, which joins canvas pieces while covering their edges. Those techniques are useful context, not a substitute for the project’s pattern.

Annie’s Attic also recommends beginning on the back and stitching over the yarn tail; its guide discusses using canvas graphs to count and mark cuts. For visual examples of basic stitches and tying off at the back, see Annie’s Attic’s plastic-canvas basic stitches, Annie’s Attic’s plastic-canvas guide, and KiwiCo’s beginner plastic-canvas stitch tutorial. These are general learning resources, not instructions for the leaf motif.

What the materials reference does not establish
The project reference does not state the finished placemat dimensions or establish whether the completed item is washable, wipeable, heat-resistant, suitable for food contact, or durable under a particular use. It should not be treated as a trivet or assumed safe for hot cookware on the basis of the materials list.
