Power-tool batteries usually suffer from avoidable heat, charging, storage, compatibility, moisture and damage mistakes. The safest way to extend service life is to treat the tool, battery and charger as one system: use the exact instructions for that platform, keep packs dry and within their specified temperature range, store them at the charge level the manufacturer requests, and remove damaged packs from service.

There is no universal storage percentage or temperature rule for every battery. For example, STIHL gives partial-charge guidance for its packs, while DEWALT says to fully charge before storage longer than six months. The ten habits below are therefore checkpoints to compare with your own manual, not a ranked laboratory list of failure causes.

The rule that overrides every battery-care tip

Read the manual for the exact battery model, tool and charger before adopting a routine. A battery platform may have several generations with different temperature limits, charging electronics or storage advice. The manual also tells you whether a pack is removable, how to transport it and where to send it for service or disposal.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

For painting work, this matters because drills, sanders, mixers, sprayers and lights may sit unused between projects. A pack that performs normally on a cool morning can behave differently after a long day in a hot van. Keep the manufacturer’s guidance with your job-site checklist, and record the battery model rather than relying on a generic “lithium-ion” rule.

10 mistakes that shorten battery life or create a safety problem

1. Leaving battery packs in extreme heat or cold

Heat accelerates chemical aging, while cold can temporarily reduce available power and make charging inappropriate. Leaving a pack on a dashboard, in a closed trailer or beside a heater exposes it to conditions the cells and battery-management electronics were not designed to tolerate. DEWALT’s safety guidance calls for cool, dry storage and avoiding extreme temperatures (DEWALT battery safety guidance).

STIHL’s published limits show why you should not copy a number from another platform. Its UK storage guidance (published July 13, 2023) states a storage range of -10°C to 50°C, while STIHL USA recommends 50–68°F ambient temperature for maximum battery life. Those figures apply to the cited STIHL guidance, not to every brand or model.

  • Take packs out of a vehicle when the vehicle will sit in direct sun or freezing weather.
  • Let a cold pack warm naturally in a dry room before charging; do not heat it with a radiator, heat gun or hair dryer.
  • Use the narrowest temperature range stated in your own manual when different documents appear to conflict.

2. Charging outside the allowed temperature range

A battery that is hot from sanding, drilling or mixing may need a cooling period before it can accept a charge. STIHL UK states that its batteries can be charged between 5°C and 40°C. Its charger can delay charging when a battery is too hot after use, which is a protective function rather than a fault (STIHL UK charging guidance).

  • Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.

Do not turn that STIHL range into a universal specification. Other platforms may specify different limits or display a temperature warning. If the charger refuses to start, move the pack to the manufacturer’s recommended environment and wait for the indicator or manual to confirm that charging is permitted. Never bypass a temperature lock with an adapter or an improvised power supply.

3. Storing a pack at the wrong charge level for months

Long-term storage at an unsuitable state of charge can reduce the capacity you have available when the next project starts. The correct target depends on the manufacturer. STIHL’s storage instructions recommend 40%–60% for its cited batteries and describe partial charge as a way to support storage life (STIHL UK storage guidance). STIHL USA gives the same 40%–60% recommendation for its battery-storage advice (STIHL USA battery storage guidance).

DEWALT’s current safety page takes a different approach, advising users to fully charge before storage longer than six months. That is why a universal “always store at 50%” rule is unreliable. Follow the instruction for your platform, label packs that are being mothballed, and check them at the interval the manual specifies rather than guessing.

4. Leaving a removable pack in the tool during extended storage

A pack left in a tool can be exposed to standby drain, accidental trigger activation, temperature swings or contact damage. DEWALT advises disengaging the battery from the tool before extended storage. For a painter, that means removing the pack from a drill, random-orbit sander, sprayer or work light before putting the equipment away for the season.

Do not force this rule onto equipment with an integrated battery. If the cells are built in, use the manufacturer’s shutdown and storage procedure instead of opening the housing. Before storing a removable pack, switch the tool off, wait for moving parts to stop, release the battery according to the tool’s instructions and protect the terminals from loose metal objects.

5. Using a charger that is not specified for the battery

Different platforms can use similar-looking slide rails or electrical connectors while requiring different charging controls. A charger that physically fits may still have the wrong voltage, communication protocol or temperature monitoring. Makita Canada’s FAQ directs users to recharge LXT batteries with a Makita battery charger and identifies the charger as part of the approved system (Makita Canada FAQ).

Check the charger model against the battery’s manual and the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Do not charge a pack with a generic bench supply, a modified cable or a charger borrowed from another platform merely because the nominal voltage appears similar. If you need a replacement charger, match the exact battery family first and then confirm regional electrical requirements.

6. Running a lithium-ion pack completely flat

Makita Canada answers the question “Should I drain my Makita battery completely before charging it” with “No never.” Its LXT guidance says not to allow an LXT lithium-ion battery to go completely dead and recommends recharging when the tool slows or labors. This is a platform-specific instruction, not proof that every battery-management system behaves identically.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

For painting jobs, slowing is a useful stop signal: a sander that bogs down, a drill that labors or a sprayer that loses pressure should get a fresh pack instead of being forced until the motor stops. Deep discharge can leave a pack unable to communicate with its charger, and repeatedly working at the point of shutdown adds heat and stress. Let the tool’s protection electronics operate normally; do not defeat a cutoff to extract a few more holes or minutes.

7. Exposing the pack to liquid or storing it damp

Water, solvent, paint, condensation and cleaning spray can reach contacts or seams and create corrosion or an electrical fault. DEWALT’s safety instructions say to avoid liquids and to store packs in a cool, dry place. A wet battery should not go directly onto a charger or back into a tool.

If a pack becomes splashed, remove it from the tool, disconnect it from any charger and follow the manufacturer’s inspection or service instructions. Do not dry it with a heat gun, puncture the casing to drain it or assume that a wiped exterior means the interior is safe. Store batteries off a concrete floor where condensation can form, and keep them away from open cans of paint, wash water and solvent rags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Continuing to use a cracked, swollen or malfunctioning pack

Visible damage changes the issue from runtime to safety. DEWALT says not to use batteries with visible damage or cracks and directs users to a service center when a battery no longer holds a charge. Stop using a pack if its housing is cracked, swollen, leaking, unusually hot, emitting an odor, sparking or failing to latch securely.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

Do not test a suspect pack by putting it in a high-load tool. Set it aside where the manufacturer permits, prevent contact with metal objects and contact the approved service or disposal channel. A sudden loss of runtime can have several causes, but a physical defect is not a troubleshooting invitation; it is a reason to remove the battery from service.

9. Trying to repair or modify the battery pack

Opening a sealed pack, replacing individual cells, bypassing a fuse or changing the protection board can create an imbalance that the original charger cannot detect. DEWALT advises users not to attempt battery repair or service and instead to use a service center. The same principle applies to drilling the case, installing an unapproved cell or converting a pack to another voltage.

Use only manufacturer-approved service, replacement packs and disposal routes. If a pack is out of warranty, the correct question is where the maker accepts damaged lithium-ion batteries, not how to recover a few cells at home. Keep photographs and the model number for the service conversation, but do not transport a visibly damaged pack in a loose toolbox unless the manufacturer tells you how to package it.

10. Storing packs insecurely or carelessly

A battery tossed into a drawer with nails, screws, keys or wet rags can short at its terminals. Packs left where children can reach them may be dropped, punctured or inserted into the wrong tool. STIHL recommends secure storage out of children’s reach, and DEWALT provides transport and disposal guidance as part of its battery-safety instructions.

Use the original terminal cover when supplied, keep packs upright or otherwise stable, and separate batteries from loose metal hardware. A case or organizer is an optional convenience, not a proven battery-life treatment. The essential controls are temperature, dryness, compatible charging equipment, correct storage charge and inspection for damage.

A practical battery routine for painting projects

Before leaving for the job

  1. Read the label and confirm that each pack matches the tool platform and voltage.
  2. Inspect the housing, contacts, latch and indicator for cracks, swelling, contamination or unusual heat.
  3. Charge only with the specified charger and within the temperature range in the manual.
  4. Pack batteries so terminals cannot touch loose metal objects, wet materials or solvent containers.

During the workday

  • Rotate charged packs instead of repeatedly forcing one pack until the tool stops.
  • When a tool slows or labors, replace the pack and let the warm one cool in a dry, shaded place.
  • Keep batteries off hot roofs, vehicle dashboards, radiators and freshly washed floors.
  • Keep dust and paint overspray away from contacts; clean only by the method the manual permits.

After the job

  1. Switch the tool off, remove removable packs and inspect them before storage.
  2. Wipe exterior dirt with a dry or manufacturer-approved method; never immerse a pack.
  3. Store at the charge level and temperature specified for that battery, especially if it will sit for months.
  4. Record any pack that loses capacity, overheats or fails to latch, and route it to authorized service rather than returning it to the toolbox.

What the published guidance actually says

Question Documented guidance How to apply it
Storage temperature STIHL USA cites 50–68°F for maximum battery life; STIHL UK cites -10°C to 50°C for its storage guidance. Use the exact range for your model and region; do not merge these figures into a universal limit.
Charging temperature STIHL UK states 5°C to 40°C for its batteries and describes charging delay when a pack is too hot. Allow a hot or cold pack to reach the permitted range before charging.
Long-term storage charge STIHL guidance recommends 40%–60%; DEWALT says to fully charge before storage longer than six months. Follow your own manufacturer’s instruction; there is no single cross-brand percentage.
Complete discharge Makita Canada says “No never” to completely draining an LXT battery before charging. Recharge when that platform’s tool slows or labors instead of forcing a shutdown.
Capacity loss STIHL Canada states 1–3% capacity loss per year for its battery products. Treat this as STIHL’s product figure, not a universal lithium-ion lifespan statistic.

How to judge a replacement battery

When a pack no longer provides acceptable runtime, compare replacements by the factors that determine safe operation rather than by an advertised amp-hour number alone. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a cross-brand ranking or independently tested longevity claim.

Comparison axis Checks to make
Exact compatibility Match the tool model, battery family, voltage and physical interface. Similar rails do not guarantee electrical compatibility.
Charger compatibility Confirm the charger model is specified for that battery platform and region.
Temperature limits Read the charging and storage ranges for the replacement pack, which may differ from another generation.
Service and disposal Choose a source that provides the manufacturer’s service, warranty and end-of-life route.
Runtime claims Compare only results measured under the same tool, load and conditions; the cited guidance provides no independent cross-brand runtime test.

Troubleshooting symptoms without making the problem worse

Symptom Safe next action
Charger will not start after heavy use Check the manual’s temperature range and allow the pack to cool naturally; do not bypass the charger’s protection.
Runtime is shorter than before Check storage history, charge level, temperature exposure and tool load. If capacity loss is accompanied by heat, swelling or damage, stop using the pack and contact service.
Battery will not latch or has a cracked case Remove it from service and use the manufacturer’s service or disposal instructions.
Pack was splashed or stored damp Disconnect it, keep it away from the charger and follow the maker’s inspection guidance; do not apply direct heat.
Battery was left flat for an extended period Do not force-charge it with another supply. Use only the specified charger and contact the manufacturer if it will not recover normally.

The practical verdict is straightforward: protect packs from temperature extremes and moisture, use the specified charger, avoid complete discharge where your platform instructs, store at the documented charge level, and retire damaged batteries instead of repairing them. Those habits address the conditions manufacturers actually warn about and are more valuable than buying a generic storage accessory.
