Make a punk patch with scrap cotton or denim, a bold design, textile markers or fabric paint, and a needle and thread. Draw directly on the fabric or use a stencil for a graphic shape; once the decoration is dry and prepared according to its product label, cut it out and sew it onto a jacket or vest.
Choose a base and a design
Use a scrap of cotton, denim, or similar fabric as the patch base. A hand-drawn design makes each patch personal; a stencil is useful for a bold shape or a motif you want to repeat. Keep the design simple enough to read from the distance at which people will see it.
If drawing with a textile marker, a paper template can help guide the design. Place cardboard behind the fabric while drawing to protect the layer underneath. A patch can also go over a tear or stain, turning a repair into part of the design.

Decorate the fabric
Draw with textile markers
Draw the design directly onto the fabric with a textile marker. This is a straightforward option when you want hand-drawn lines or lettering rather than a filled graphic shape. Faber-Castell’s patch tutorial demonstrates using a template and cardboard backing.

Use a stencil and fabric paint
For a graphic design, transfer or position a bold stencil on the fabric and fill the shape with fabric paint. The DIY Conspiracy tutorial covers this approach. Follow the directions for the specific marker or paint you use, including its drying, heat-setting, and wash-care instructions. There is no single setting time that applies to every product.
Cut out and sew on the patch
- Wait until the decoration is ready to handle, following its product directions.
- Cut the motif out of the scrap fabric. Leave enough material around it to stitch through the edge; no single border width is required.
- Place the patch on the jacket or vest and check its position before sewing. If it covers a damaged spot, make sure the tear or stain is covered.
- Choose a needle suited to the garment fabric. American Patch’s sewing guide advises heavier needles for denim and leather.
- Stitch around the patch edge to attach it. For more placement guidance, see American Patch’s jacket application guide.
Pick the method that fits the look

The available tutorials describe these techniques but do not provide controlled comparisons of how long different patches last. Avoid assuming that one decoration or attachment approach will outlast another in every use.
