To make a shadow puppet, cut a character from black cardstock or other opaque thin cardboard, tape a stick to its back, and hold it in the beam between a light and a translucent screen. Keep the puppet close to the screen for a sharper shadow. A cardboard box makes a compact theatre; a sheet stretched across a frame works for a larger display.

Choose the puppet and theatre that fit your project

Start with a single silhouette if you want a quick puppet that is easy to control. Choose an articulated design if the character needs moving limbs; it takes more assembly and may need separate controls. For the screen, use a box theatre for a small tabletop show, or stretched fabric when you have room for a larger setup.

Choice Best for What it involves
Single-piece silhouette A quick build and simple handling Cut one shape from opaque material and attach a stick.
Articulated puppet Characters that need moving parts Cut separate pieces and join them with brads or string. Overlap each limb joint onto the body so the pieces stay connected during movement.
Tabletop box theatre A compact, self-contained setup Make a frame and screen from a cardboard or shoe box.
Larger fabric screen A bigger viewing area Stretch translucent fabric, such as a white sheet, taut across a sturdy frame.

Gather materials

For a basic puppet, you need opaque thin material, scissors, tape, and a handle such as a craft stick or dowel. Black cardstock is one option; a cereal box or milk carton can also work if its cardboard blocks light. For an articulated puppet, add brads or string for joints. These materials are listed in the Natural History Museum’s shadow-puppet activity; the Library of Congress activity also describes painting a cutout character black and taping a stick to its back.

For a box theatre, gather a cardboard or shoe box, tissue or tracing paper, tape, and a lamp or torch. For a larger screen, use translucent fabric and a sturdy frame.

Make a single-piece shadow puppet

  1. Draw or trace a character. Use a bold outline that will be recognizable as a silhouette. Keep the shape connected rather than drawing delicate details that could be difficult to cut or handle.
  2. Cut out the shape. Cut from black cardstock or other opaque thin cardboard. If you use a lighter-colored cutout, painting it black is another approach described by the Library of Congress.
  3. Attach the handle. Tape a craft stick, dowel, or other suitable stick to the back of the puppet. Leave enough handle exposed to move it without your hand entering the lit area.

Add movement with articulated joints

For a puppet with moving limbs, cut the body and limbs as separate pieces. Join them at the joints with brads or string, overlapping each limb onto the body so it remains attached as you move it. A single cutout is simpler to build and control; use articulated parts only where the movement will help tell the story.

Build a cardboard-box theatre

  1. Cut the front screen opening. Leave a border around the opening to form a frame.
  2. Make an opening at the back. This gives access for the light and for moving the puppets.
  3. Cover the front opening. Tape tissue or tracing paper over it to make the translucent screen.
  4. Position the light. Put a lamp or torch behind the screen and aim it through the paper.
  5. Move the puppet into the beam. Hold it between the light and screen, close to the screen when you want a clear shadow.

This small-theatre arrangement follows the Churches Conservation Trust’s box-theatre activity.

Set up a larger fabric screen

Stretch a translucent fabric, such as a white sheet, tightly across a sturdy frame. Put a lamp behind the screen, then place the puppet in the light beam between the lamp and fabric. Adjust the bulb wattage to suit the lamp’s position, room, and screen size; the Queensland Museum’s activity recommends choosing the bulb with those conditions in mind.

Arrange the light, puppet, and screen

The working order is light → puppet → screen. The puppet blocks some of the light, creating the shadow on the screen. Keep the puppet close to the screen for a clear outline; moving it farther from the screen changes the projection. The IET classroom activity likewise places the puppet in the beam between a torch and a screen.

  • If you cannot see a shadow, check that the light is aimed through the puppet toward the screen.
  • If the outline is unclear, bring the puppet nearer to the screen and check that the screen is translucent.
  • If the setup is too large or awkward to handle, scale it down to a tabletop box or use a single-piece puppet.

Practical results vary with the screen material, light placement, and room conditions. Shadow puppetry also leaves room for the audience to imagine details: artist Caroline Borderies told The Metropolitan Museum of Art that a silhouette suggests a character rather than depicting every detail, inviting spectators to participate in creating the story. In the same interview, she describes using a spotlight, black-paper cutouts, and colored lighting gels to create a world on a glowing screen: The Met’s interview with Caroline Borderies.
