Cabochon “follow me” eyes create the appearance of a tracking gaze with a fixed printed pupil beneath a clear, curved dome. The image does not move: the dome and eye artwork make the gaze seem to shift as you change viewing angle. For a straightforward craft version, use glass gems, printed irises, glue, and white paper backing.
How the follow-me effect works
The eye image stays stationary under a transparent cabochon. The curved dome changes how the image appears from different angles, creating the illusion that the pupil follows the viewer. A centered pupil beneath the dome is a useful starting arrangement, but the sources do not establish a particular dome height or quantify how strong the effect will look.

Materials for the basic glass cabochon version
- Clear glass gems or cabochons.
- Printed iris images, cut to fit the flat area beneath each dome. Make: gives about ½ inch as an example, not a universal size.
- Glue suitable for the paper-and-gem method.
- White paper for the sclera and backing.
- Optional red yarn fibers for capillaries.
- Scissors and a small brush for applying glue.
Choose the cabochon and printed artwork to fit the actual eye opening. A doll-eye maker lists 16 mm cabochons for one tutorial, while a general craft explainer also advises matching the artwork to the flat diameter; neither establishes a size that fits every project. Make the paper-and-glue eyes
- Print and cut the irises. Prepare eye images sized for the flat area under the cabochons. The Make: project uses about ½-inch irises as an example.
- Attach each iris face down. Brush glue onto the back of a glass gem, place the iris image face down, and press out bubbles.
- Let the glue dry, then seal the image. Apply a second glue coat to decoupage the iris.
- Add optional capillaries. Arrange small red yarn fibers on the eye and coat them with glue.
- Apply the white backing. While the glue is wet, add white paper to create the sclera and backing. Press out bubbles and let it dry.
- Trim and seal. Trim excess paper, then apply another decoupage coat for durability.
Make: suggests using its finished eyes on props or as refrigerator magnets. Its tutorial is by Eduardo Talbert, who describes the project as “eyes that seem to follow you wherever you stand!” Read the complete Make: tutorial

Adaptations for dolls and masks
Doll eyes: size the cabochon to the opening
The irico doll tutorial describes printing eye images in several sizes, placing UV-LED resin so it spreads across the cabochon, curing it under a UV light, and trimming the result. Its listed 16 mm cabochon is specific to that maker’s tutorial; measure your doll’s opening rather than assuming that size will fit. irico doll’s tutorial
Fursuit eyes: consider a modeled form
The fursuitmak.ing tutorial uses a modeled, 3D-printed eye form. Its wall partially obscures the sclera to support the watching-gaze appearance. Mask visibility: check whether the eye is opaque
Do not assume that a follow-me eye is see-through. Dragonstorm Studios specifically identifies its hand-painted acrylic eyes as opaque and recommends adding tear-duct mesh beneath each eye opening so the wearer can see. - The eye looks misaligned: Check that the iris is centered beneath the cabochon before sealing it, and confirm that the artwork fits the dome’s flat area.
- Bubbles show through: Press them out while attaching the image and again when applying the backing, as the Make: instructions advise.
- The eye does not suit the opening: Measure the opening first and choose a cabochon and artwork to match; the 16 mm example is not a universal standard.
- The wearer cannot see through the mask eye: Confirm the eye material and construction. For the opaque acrylic eyes described by Dragonstorm Studios, the seller recommends tear-duct mesh for visibility.
The cited tutorials provide practical examples, not a controlled comparison of cabochon materials, dome shapes, adhesives, optical effect, or long-term durability. Choose the construction based on the project and treat maker preferences as project-specific guidance.
