Turn a clean, dry plastic bottle into a simple toy car with four bottle-cap wheels, two axles and a pull string. Line up the axle holes carefully so the wheels can spin without rubbing; an adult should handle or supervise puncturing and cutting.
Materials for a bottle car
- One clean, dry plastic bottle with its screw-top lid
- Four same-size bottle caps for wheels
- Two wooden dowels or kebab sticks for axles
- String for a pull-along car
- Rubber bands or another suitable way to keep the wheels in place
- A pointed tool and scissors or another way to cut the axles to length; have an adult handle or directly supervise these tools
You can also use short pieces of straw as axle sleeves. The bottle and saved caps form the main parts, so extra materials are optional.
Build the pull-along car

Prepare and mark the bottle
Wash the bottle and let it dry. Mark two axle positions near the lower part of the bottle, spacing them so one axle will sit near the front and the other near the back. At each position, mark directly opposite points on both sides of the bottle so the axle will pass straight through.

Make the axle and wheel holes
With adult help, carefully make holes through the bottle at the marked points. Make a centered hole in each cap, then cut the two sticks to a length that allows a wheel to attach at each end while clearing the bottle.

Fit the axles and wheels
Pass one stick through each pair of aligned bottle holes. Push a cap onto each end to make four wheels, and secure them with rubber bands or another suitable retainer. Leave enough clearance that the caps do not press against the bottle.

Add the pull string
Thread one end of the string through the bottle lid and knot it on the inside. Screw the lid back onto the bottle, leaving the free end of the string outside as a handle.

Check that it rolls
Set the car on a smooth surface and push it gently. Check that the axles are parallel, each wheel is secure, the wheels do not wobble or rub the body, and the axles can turn freely. Reposition a wheel or correct the alignment if the car sticks or veers.

Use straw sleeves for smoother axle movement
Instead of passing the axles directly through the bottle, attach a short straw segment beneath the body at each axle position. Run a skewer through each straw segment, then attach the caps to the skewer ends. The axle turns inside the sleeve, which acts as a guide. Keep the two sleeves aligned and make sure the wheels still clear the bottle.

Choose how the car moves
| Version | What to add | How it moves |

| Push-along | The bottle, cap wheels and axles | Push the car by hand. |
| Pull-along | String threaded through the screw cap | Pull the string to move the car. |
| Balloon-powered | A balloon, straw, rubber band and tape, in addition to the wheel-and-axle chassis | Attach the balloon neck to the straw and secure the assembly on the bottle with the straw pointing backward. Inflate the balloon, hold the car on a smooth surface, then release it. |
The balloon version uses escaping air to propel the car; the pull string and push-along versions use a direct pull or push. No controlled comparison establishes which design is fastest or travels farthest.

Puncturing bottle caps or the bottle, cutting sticks and handling skewers involve sharp tools or points. An adult should do these steps or closely supervise them, and check that the wheels are securely attached before play. The NASCAR Kids activity likewise advises, “Be sure to grab an adult to help you.”
