What you’ll need
- Small white pumpkins
- Red votive candles
- Pumpkin carving tools
- A small spoon
- A black permanent marker, such as a Sharpie
How to make a vampire pumpkin candle
- Mark the opening. Turn a votive over and use its sticker base as a guide to trace a circle on top of the pumpkin.
- Cut and hollow the pumpkin. Carefully cut along the circle and remove the top. Scoop out the seeds and pulp with a small spoon until there is room for the votive.
- Carve the fangs. On the front of the pumpkin, carve two small curved fangs below where the mouth will be.
- Draw the eyes. Use the black marker to add two small, beady eyes above the fangs.
- Add the votive. Set the red candle inside the opening. The original Freutcake tutorial notes that, as it burns, red wax drips down the pumpkin for a creepy effect (Freutcake’s October 8, 2014 tutorial).
Votive insert or poured-wax version?

Use an open flame cautiously
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, as CandleTech advises in its mini pumpkin candle guidance.
- If you choose the poured-wax variation, use a hot pad and trivet when handling the heated container, following The Kitchn’s hot-wax precautions.
- The cited tutorials do not establish a tested burn time or a complete safety standard for burning a candle inside a fresh pumpkin. Do not treat a particular unattended or extended burn period as proven safe.
