Yes—you can make a publishable webtoon in Photoshop. The reliable method is to keep a large, layered master file; design every beat for phone-sized vertical scrolling; then export a duplicate as sequential JPG or PNG images and test those files on mobile. Photoshop supplies the drawing, lettering, layer, mask, artboard and export tools, but you still have to solve pacing, readability, slicing and platform compliance.
What makes a webtoon different from a page comic?
A traditional comic page is composed inside a fixed rectangle. A webtoon is a top-to-bottom reading experience on a narrow screen, so the space between images becomes part of the storytelling. Panel heights can vary, scenes can be separated by generous blank space, and a reveal or punchline may appear only after a deliberate scroll.
- Design for one-direction reading from top to bottom.
- Keep lettering and important faces readable without zooming.
- Use larger gaps before reveals, emotional turns and scene changes.
- Limit the number of dense panels visible in one phone viewport.
- Make transitions understandable even when the reader sees only one screen at a time.
Think of Photoshop as the production tool, not the story editor. A brush cannot repair unclear sequencing or cramped dialogue.

- A finished script or at least a scene-by-scene outline.
- A thumbnail storyboard showing panel order, scroll distance and reveals.
- Character and background references.
- A lettering plan for dialogue, captions and sound effects.
- The publishing destination and its current uploader requirements.
- A backup routine with versioned PSD or PSB files.
This workflow targets current Photoshop desktop. Adobe’s web and mobile apps, Photoshop Elements and older perpetual releases may show different commands. If a menu label differs, use Photoshop’s command search or Help search rather than assuming another edition has the same feature. Photoshop is subscription software; current plan details are listed at Adobe’s Photoshop plans page.

Choose a canvas strategy and working size
Separate the size you draw at from the width readers will see. A practical raster starting point is 1,600 or 2,400 pixels wide, with a custom height of roughly 10,000–30,000 pixels when the computer can handle it. These are workflow recommendations, not WEBTOON CANVAS rules. Work at two or three times the intended reading width when smoother lines and detailed rendering help, then resize a duplicate for export.
Online quality is governed mainly by pixel dimensions and compression, not by DPI/PPI. Use pixels, RGB Color and preferably an sRGB-oriented workflow. Keep lettering and essential details away from extreme edges and future slice boundaries.
One long document
- Best for: continuous backgrounds, scroll pacing and reviewing the whole episode.
- Costs: large PSD or PSB files, slower navigation and a single file that can contain the whole episode’s risk.
Scene documents or artboards
- Best for: long episodes, team work, independent revisions and better performance.
- Costs: transitions need alignment, and export order must be managed carefully.
A useful compromise is to draw scene by scene, then assemble a flattened review copy or long episode layout for pacing and slicing. Photoshop artboards are independent canvases that can contain layers and groups; see Adobe’s artboard overview and artboard properties.

- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
- 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
- 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
- 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Build an organized, non-destructive file
Create the document with File > New, pixels as the unit, RGB Color, your chosen working width and a tall height or scene-sized canvas. For exceptionally large files, PSB (Photoshop’s large-document format) can be more practical than PSD.

Keep sketches, guides, panel markers, safe-area overlays and slice boundaries on separate hidden layers. Use folders for sketch, clean line art, flats, shadows, highlights, backgrounds, effects and dialogue. Save a layered master before every major export pass.
Storyboard the vertical reading flow
Start with a low-detail or grayscale storyboard layer. Check panel order, character orientation, speaker identification, scene transitions, reveal timing and whether an important image would be split by a future export boundary. Zoom out until the episode resembles a phone feed: if lettering disappears or every panel has the same visual volume, revise the composition before rendering.

Webtoons do not need conventional rectangular borders. You can combine borderless art, full-width panels, floating panels, colored gutters, continuing backgrounds and very tall atmospheric panels. Where you do use panels, keep borders separate from artwork and crop with layer masks rather than erasing pixels.

Draw, ink, color and shade
- Lower the opacity of the rough storyboard and sketch on a separate layer.
- Ink on its own layer or group.
- Place flat colors beneath the line art.
- Use clipping masks or selections for shadows and highlights.
- Put atmosphere, glows and effects on separate layers.
- Keep global color correction above scene groups.
- Save incremental versions and preserve editable line art, masks and text.
Working large can make lines and faces easier to draw, but reduction can make small lettering unreadable and increases memory use. Working at final width gives a more honest mobile preview. Test both approaches on a short sample rather than treating either resolution as universally superior. Adobe documents reduction resampling options, including Bicubic Sharper and Preserve Details, in its Export settings guide.
Letter for a phone, not a monitor
Keep dialogue as live Photoshop text layers until proofreading is complete. Give balloons and captions consistent padding, strong contrast and enough weight to survive reduction and compression. Separate dialogue, captions and sound effects into different groups, and keep text away from slice edges.

- 【PREPARE YOUR IPAD BEFORE USE】Before using our iPad pen, ensure the "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" feature is off in Settings > Apple Pencil. Disabling this option is crucial for proper stylus functionality.
- 【UNIVERSAL STYLUS】Our stylus pens for touch screens are widely compatible with all touch screens including smartphones, Android tablets, touch screen laptops/PCs. They also work with Apple iPads, iPhones, iPad Pro, iPad Mini, iPad Air, Surface, Chromebooks and other capacitive touch screen devices.
- 【2-in-1 DESIGN】The stylus pen comes with different tips on both ends. One end is the disc tip, which is more accurate and sensitive, suitable for taking notes and drawing. The other end is a durable fibre tip for browsing or scrolling web pages, effectively protecting the screen from fingerprints or smudges.
- 【HIDDEN SPARE TIP】This 3 pack of stylus pens includes 3 additional disc tips and 3 extra fibre tips. Each disc tip is placed inside the stylus body. The spare tip can be taken out by simply rotating the fibre tip end. Convenient for always having a spare pen tip ready to go.
- 【HIGH PRECISION & SENSITIVITY】The stylus pen features a flexible disc tip that fits flexibly on the screen without leaving broken lines. Additionally, the disc tip is transparent, allowing you to get a clearer view when writing or drawing.
- Use a readable, not overly thin, typeface.
- Make balloons large enough for normal phone reading distance.
- Do not rely on color alone to identify speakers.
- Check every line at the intended output size and on an actual phone.
- Proofread after export, not only in the master document.
Prepare color for online delivery
Use RGB rather than print CMYK. Prefer sRGB for predictable browser and device color, and inspect saturated colors after conversion. Photoshop’s Export As controls can convert exports to sRGB and embed the profile; the same Adobe guide explains those options: Export settings and location preferences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export from Photoshop
First save the layered master. Then use File > Save As or Save a Copy to create an export duplicate, such as episode-01-export.psd or episode-01-export.psb. Hide guides, sketches and notes, verify fonts and linked files, inspect scene tops and bottoms, and flatten only this duplicate if needed.

Export As
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Select JPG for most fully colored episodes, or PNG for transparency, flat graphics or line art that shows objectionable JPG artifacts.
- Set the intended output width and choose an appropriate resampling method.
- Inspect lettering and line art at 100 percent and review the estimated file size.
- Export with sequential names such as
episode-01_001.jpg,episode-01_002.jpgandepisode-01_003.jpg.
Save for Web
File > Export > Save for Web offers JPG, PNG and other web formats, quality controls, previews and file-size information while leaving the original PSD unchanged. Start with high-quality JPG for a colored comic and lower quality only enough to meet the destination’s limit. There is no universal “quality 80” setting: gradients, textures, line density and tiny text determine the acceptable value. See Adobe’s Save for Web documentation.
Best Value
- 『Better Than Finger』- A stylus has a better touch point than the tip of your finger giving better accuracy to little touch focuses like keys on the console. No more big finger troubles.
- 『Anti-Scratch Tip』- The stylus pen tip was made of soft, and scratch resistant rubber, which can protect your screen from scratching and keep no fingerprints.
- 『Easy To Carry』- Slim body and lightweight. Clip design is great for clipping in your pocket, diary, etc. Great stylus for kids.
- 『Perfect For Sharing』- Get 10 of tablet stylus with an unbeatable price. You can share this tablet pen to your friends or family.
- 『Universal Capacitive Stylus』- 100% compatible with all capacitive touch screen devices, such as iPad,iPhone, tablets, samsung galaxy and so on.
Format decision
| Format | Use it for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Most fully colored episodes | Much smaller; compression can damage fine lines and small text |
| PNG | Transparency, flat-color graphics or visibly delicate line work | Lossless edges and transparency, but often much larger files |
| PSD/PSB | Layered master | Editable, but not a publishing format |
Slice a long episode without breaking the story
- Duplicate the finished episode or use the export review copy.
- Place horizontal guides at planned boundaries, preferably in gutters or natural scene breaks.
- Keep faces, balloons, captions and key sound effects away from boundaries.
- Crop or export each section from the same continuous flattened source.
- Use exact sequential coordinates and filenames.
- Open the images in order and check continuity before uploading.
Do not resize slices independently; that can create seams. If the platform automatically slices long images, inspect its preview because an automatic boundary may ignore your pacing. Artboards can organize independently exported scenes, while guides are usually better for one continuous episode.
Upload to WEBTOON CANVAS
WEBTOON’s Help Center currently documents these thumbnail limits:
| Thumbnail | Dimensions | Maximum size | Formats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square | 1,080 × 1,080 px | 500 KB | JPG, JPEG or PNG |
| Vertical | 1,080 × 1,920 px | 700 KB | JPG, JPEG or PNG |
Source: WEBTOON Help Center. The same page notes that images over 2.5 MB may cause problems in Internet Explorer and recommends Chrome for episode uploads; that is a browser-specific support note, not a universal current episode limit.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text is unreadable | Too much reduction, thin font, small balloon or JPG damage | Compare the export at 100%; enlarge or weight the type, improve contrast, test PNG or higher-quality JPG, then check a phone |
| Upload is rejected | Wrong extension, dimensions, size, mode, profile or metadata | Confirm the live uploader’s limits, flatten a clean export, verify RGB and try Chrome |
| Seam between slices | Independent resizing, mismatched crops or awkward gradient cut | Re-export all slices from one source with exact coordinates and inspect the uploaded preview |
| Balloon is cut in half | Boundary crosses important lettering | Move the guide or add a deliberate gutter; keep text slice-safe |
| Photoshop is slow or crashes | Huge canvas, many layers or insufficient memory | Split scenes, use PSB when appropriate, remove disposable export layers, close other heavy apps and save versions |
| Online colors shift | Non-RGB document, missing profile, wide-gamut display or platform conversion | Export in an sRGB-oriented workflow and compare the final file on more than one device |
Final mobile-preview checklist
- Open the exported files in exact reading order.
- Test on a real phone at normal reading distance.
- Confirm every dialogue balloon, caption and sound effect is readable without zooming.
- Check faces, hands and important props at the reduced width.
- Look for accidental seams, clipped balloons and abrupt color changes.
- Scroll through both scene transitions and long pauses.
- Verify filenames, dimensions, file sizes and formats against the current platform uploader.
- Keep the layered master and a separate export copy backed up.
Is Photoshop the right tool?
Photoshop is capable and flexible for raster painting, compositing, editable text, masks and color correction. Dedicated comic applications may offer more specialized panel, balloon and slicing features, while free raster tools can reduce subscription cost. The deciding question is whether Photoshop’s desktop workflow and ongoing subscription justify that flexibility for your production habits. Adobe’s current plan comparison is at Creative Cloud plans.
