Wicker furniture is back, but the current look depends on shape, material and context—not on recreating a matching 1990s suite. Designers are using woven surfaces on rounded sofas, sculptural chairs, headboards and occasional tables, then balancing them with paint, stone, timber, metal and generous upholstery. The result is warmer and more architectural than the lightweight, uniform patio sets many people remember.

Is wicker furniture really back in style?
Current 2026 design coverage shows wicker and rattan appearing across living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, offices and outdoor rooms. That does not prove that every buyer or designer has adopted the material, or that wicker has become a single dominant trend. It does show a clear change in how woven furniture is being composed: pieces have fuller silhouettes, richer finishes and a more deliberate relationship with the rest of the room.
Homes & Gardens describes the appeal as a reaction to disposable-looking interiors. Interior designer Lauren Saab told the magazine, “People are craving history over hype,” and said wicker has “that collected, passed down feeling, like it has always been there, which gives a space depth you cannot fake with brand new, overly polished pieces.” The useful takeaway is not to make a room look old-fashioned. It is to choose an object with visible texture and a sense of permanence, then place it in a carefully edited scheme.

Architectural Digest and Boston Design Guide likewise show woven furniture indoors as well as outside. A rattan chair beside a painted wall, a woven headboard against a quiet neutral, or a single cane-front cabinet can supply the material contrast that a room needs without turning it into a themed set.
First, separate wicker from rattan
Wicker describes a weaving method; rattan describes one possible material. A product called “wicker” may be woven from natural rattan, other plant fibers, paper-based material or synthetic resin. A product marketed as “rattan-look” may contain no natural rattan at all. The title alone does not tell you how the frame, weave or finish will perform.
Natural rattan is a plant-derived cane valued for irregular texture, tonal variation and a tactile surface. Synthetic wicker is commonly made from resin or polyethylene strands formed to resemble a natural weave. It can be engineered for outdoor use, but only when the complete product—including its frame and finish—is rated for weather exposure.

What makes the new wicker look modern?
Fuller, rounded silhouettes
Modernity is coming primarily from form. Garden designer Mirela Bajic told Livingetc, “What makes this feel more modern than traditional wicker is the overall shape.” She pointed to “rounded back and arms” that make an outdoor sofa feel closer to an indoor sofa than a classic garden piece. Deep cushions, broad arms and a continuous curved back give woven furniture visual weight.
Instead of a thin, straight-backed chair repeated around a table, consider one generous lounge chair, a softly curved loveseat or a barrel-shaped dining chair. The weave then reads as a surface on a substantial object rather than as the entire identity of the room.

Thicker weaves and warmer finishes
Livingetc quotes designer Nick Woodhouse describing “thicker weaves, richer and warmer tones, forms that have genuine weight to them.” Honey, tobacco, chestnut and deep brown finishes can look more current than a room filled with identical pale straw pieces. A dark stain can also sharpen the outline of a woven object against a light wall.

A warm brown weave works with cream, clay, muted green and chalky blue paint; black or espresso wicker can anchor a room with off-white, pale pink or mineral-gray walls. Inspect a sample in your actual daylight because natural fibers vary considerably from one piece to another.
Wicker used as one layer, not a complete theme
Boston Design Guide recommends limiting wicker to one to three pieces in a room and combining it with metal, stone or upholstered furniture. That is a styling recommendation, not a universal rule, but the principle is useful: let woven texture have a supporting role. A wicker chair beside a painted wooden table usually feels more intentional than a complete matching collection of wicker chairs, tables, shelves and lamps.
Mixing materials with purpose
Contemporary examples place woven furniture beside materials with a different visual temperature. Stone provides cool solidity, timber adds grain, metal supplies a crisp edge and upholstery introduces softness. The contrast prevents the weave from becoming visually noisy.
For an outdoor room, pair a rounded woven sofa with a honed stone table and one timber element. Indoors, combine a rattan chair with a painted chest, a linen cushion and a metal reading lamp. The goal is not rustic uniformity; it is a controlled conversation between surfaces.
Choose the material for the exposure
Natural and synthetic wicker are not interchangeable. Their suitability depends on where the furniture will live, how much protection it receives and how much maintenance you are prepared to provide.

| Decision | Natural rattan or natural wicker | Synthetic resin wicker |
|---|---|---|
| Best placement | Indoor rooms and genuinely covered outdoor areas | Exposed patios and other weather-facing settings, when the product is specifically outdoor-rated |
| Inspect before buying | Fiber consistency, weave, joinery and frame construction | Resin specification, UV stabilization, weave quality and an outdoor-engineered frame |
| Visual character | Natural variation, tactile warmth and an unmistakably organic surface | A consistent woven appearance with more predictable outdoor maintenance |
| Main caution | Do not assume that natural material is all-weather | “Wicker” or “rattan-look” does not prove resin quality or weather performance |
For an uncovered patio, buyer guidance from Gardenline International and Indochine Decor points toward synthetic resin or polyethylene wicker with a frame designed for outdoor conditions. Those recommendations are purchasing guidance rather than independent durability tests. Confirm the maker’s warranty, care instructions and exposure limits before ordering.
Can natural rattan stay outside?
Natural rattan can work in a covered porch, screened room or other protected location, but prolonged sun and moisture can change its structure. Homes & Gardens quotes interior designer Sophie deDomenico: “Like any natural material, excessive sun exposure and moisture change wicker’s structure.” An open patio, coastal balcony or place that receives regular rain demands a higher level of protection than a roofed terrace.
If you use natural wicker outdoors, keep it out of standing water, provide shade where possible and bring cushions inside when weather changes. Storage during the wet or cold season extends the life of the material. Always follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions, because coatings, fibers and frames vary.
Use paint to make wicker feel intentional
Because this is a painting-focused decision as much as a furniture decision, start with the wall color and the amount of visual contrast you want.
For a quiet, tonal room
Place honey or pale natural wicker against warm white, oatmeal or light mushroom paint. Keep upholstery in linen, ecru or a faded stripe. The weave supplies enough variation that additional pattern can remain restrained.
For a stronger architectural contrast
Use espresso, walnut or black-stained wicker against a soft mineral white, dusty blue or muted sage wall. Repeat one dark note in a lamp, curtain rod or picture frame so the furniture does not appear isolated.

Pair medium-brown wicker with clay, terracotta, olive or tobacco paint. Add stone and aged timber rather than glossy finishes. This approach supports the heritage feeling Saab describes without imitating a period room.

Against pale exterior paint, a rounded synthetic-wicker sofa in warm gray, taupe or charcoal can act as the anchor. Add one saturated textile—such as rust, cobalt or leaf green—instead of covering every surface with a competing print.

Living rooms
Use one substantial chair, a low coffee table or a console with woven doors. Upholster the seat generously and keep the surrounding furniture crisp. A single woven piece can soften a room dominated by painted cabinetry and hard flooring.
Dining rooms
A natural rattan dining chair is most convincing when its frame and weave are clearly specified. Mix it with a wood or stone table rather than a full matching suite. If the chairs are visually active, choose a simple wall color and let the table provide the darker anchor.
Bedrooms
A woven headboard or bench adds pattern without requiring a large footprint. Layer it with plain bedding, a textured throw and one painted bedside table. Avoid repeating the same weave on every lamp, basket and storage piece.
Bathrooms and offices
In a bathroom, keep natural fibers away from direct splash zones and rely on a small stool, mirror frame or cabinet front. In an office, a woven guest chair can break up painted shelving and a metal desk while remaining practical.

Outdoor rooms
Think of the patio as an outdoor living room. ELLE Decor quotes Retiro Design Co. founder Ritu Nagpal: “Ultimately, the goal is to blur the line between indoors and out—designing outdoor rooms with the same level of comfort, intention, and personality you’d expect inside.” Choose weather-rated construction, substantial cushions and lighting that makes the space usable after sunset.
Care routines that protect the weave
Natural wicker
- Dust with a soft brush or dry cloth so grit does not work into the fibers.
- Use occasional gentle washing only when the maker permits it; avoid soaking the frame or leaving water trapped in the weave.
- Dry completely before covering or storing.
- Cover pieces when they are unused and move them indoors for the off-season where possible.
- Keep them away from prolonged direct sun, heaters and persistent damp.
Synthetic outdoor wicker
- Rinse or wipe according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially after salt or airborne pollution settles on the surface.
- Check the frame, feet and fasteners—not only the visible weave—for corrosion or movement.
- Use a breathable cover rather than sealing damp cushions underneath an impermeable sheet.
- Inspect after storms for broken strands, loose joints or water pooling inside the frame.
Do not apply a generic oil, solvent or pressure wash unless the product instructions explicitly allow it. Treatments that work on one resin or natural fiber can discolor another.
A buying checklist for modern wicker
- Define the location. Record whether the piece will be indoors, under a roof, in a screened area or fully exposed.
- Identify the material. Ask whether the weave is natural rattan, another natural fiber, resin or polyethylene.
- Check the frame. Look for an outdoor-engineered frame where required, sound joinery and stable feet.
- Assess the weave. It should be even, secure at edges and free from unexplained gaps, sharp ends or loose wrapping.
- Evaluate the silhouette. Rounded backs, fuller arms and generous proportions generally create the newer visual language more effectively than a thin matching set.
- Test the color in context. View a finish beside your wall paint, flooring and textiles in daylight and evening light.
- Read the care and warranty terms. Confirm exposure limits, cleaning methods, storage advice and what the warranty actually covers.
How to avoid the dated 1990s effect
Do not treat every woven piece from the 1990s as identical; the decade contained many styles. The useful distinction is compositional. A room can feel dated when every item shares the same pale weave, the same straight profile and the same matching finish. It feels more current when one or two pieces have sculptural volume, the palette is warmer or deeper, and other materials interrupt the repetition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with the largest form—the sofa, headboard or dining chair—then edit smaller accessories around it. Add upholstery with enough thickness to make the furniture comfortable, choose paint that supports rather than competes with the weave, and leave open space around the object so its outline can be read. Elizabeth Hay told ELLE Decor, “There’s something so eternally right about a well-crafted rattan chair with a fat linen cushion in a faded stripe.” That formula works because the substantial cushion and restrained pattern balance the texture of the cane.
Wicker’s renewed appeal is therefore less about reproducing a decade and more about using a familiar craft in a disciplined way. Select the material for the exposure, choose a silhouette with presence, and let paint and neighboring materials give the weave a modern setting.
