You can make a home look more expensive without replacing every piece of furniture. The biggest gains in perceived value usually come from what people notice first: clear surfaces, a deliberate furniture plan, coordinated colors and materials, layered light, well-scaled textiles and art, consistent hardware, finished windows, and visible maintenance. Start with the changes that are easiest to see from the entrance and from the room’s main seating position.

These are appearance and usability recommendations from interior-design guidance, not guarantees of a higher sale price. The cited design sources do not provide a controlled percentage or monetary return for any of these updates. Treat “expensive” as shorthand for considered, polished and cared-for.

Change Best first check Typical caution
Decluttering and layout What is visible from the doorway and where people naturally sit Do not remove useful storage or force furniture against walls
Palette, texture and style How fixed finishes, rugs, curtains and upholstery relate Coordination does not mean every room or item must match
Lighting and hardware Whether light sources and metal finishes look intentional together Check electrical compatibility, measurements and maintenance
Art, wallpaper and windows Scale against the wall and nearby furniture Account for rental rules, installation and accurate measuring
Upkeep and entry details What a visitor sees before reaching the main room Basic cleaning and repairs come before buying more decor

1. Clear visual clutter before adding anything

Clutter makes even good furniture and finishes look accidental. In an open living area, remove objects that obscure tabletops, shelves, floors and sightlines. Keep only items that are useful, meaningful or visually strong enough to earn their space.

Use storage that solves a real problem

Closed cabinets, drawers and baskets can conceal chargers, toys, paperwork and remote controls, but storage should fit the volume and frequency of what you own. An overfilled basket still reads as clutter. Group everyday items in one accessible container and return decorative surfaces to a small number of intentional pieces.

Make the first view calm

Stand at the room’s entrance and photograph the view. Remove anything that blocks a focal point or creates a line of unrelated small objects. This quick edit costs nothing and often makes paint color, artwork and furniture appear more substantial.

2. Rework the furniture layout around conversation

A room feels considered when its arrangement explains how it is used. Test seating that faces one another or forms an easy conversational grouping instead of pointing every chair toward the television. The television can remain important, but it should not dictate every position if doing so leaves the room awkward.

Give major pieces breathing room

Pull sofas and chairs far enough from walls to create a usable circulation path where the room allows. Leave clear routes to doors, windows and storage. A rug can anchor the grouping; ideally, the front legs of major seating sit on it so the pieces read as one arrangement rather than scattered objects.

Check the layout at normal viewing points

Walk in from the entry, sit in the primary chair and look toward the room’s focal point. If a table blocks movement or a chair has no comfortable view, adjust before purchasing anything. The most expensive-looking plan is usually the one that feels effortless to use.

3. Build a coherent color palette from the fixed elements

Start with what is hardest to change: wall color, flooring, a large rug, countertops and window treatments. Martha Stewart has advised beginning with “the colour of the walls, and the rug … and the window treatments.” Once those anchors are established, choose upholstery, paint accents and accessories that relate to them.

Coordinate without making everything identical

Use a small group of related hues and repeat them in different materials or intensities. A warm wall can work with a cooler accent if a rug, artwork or wood tone creates a bridge. The goal is visual relationship, not a showroom set in which every object comes from one collection.

Sample paint in the actual room

Paint shifts with daylight, lamps and neighboring finishes. Test sample areas on more than one wall and observe them morning and evening before committing. In a small house, continuing a color through connected spaces can create flow, while a distinct tone in one room can still work when undertones are compatible.

4. Make the decorating style intentional

Mixing old and new pieces can give a home character, but unrelated items piled together look provisional. Choose a visual link such as a repeated wood tone, curved shape, metal finish, era, pattern scale or color temperature.

Edit contrasts rather than eliminating them

A vintage cabinet beside a contemporary lamp can look deliberate when one detail is echoed elsewhere. If a room contains several strong styles, reduce competing patterns and let one or two pieces lead. Martha Stewart’s guidance, quoted by Woman & Home, cautions against combinations that clash rather than complement.

Keep personal character

“Expensive-looking” does not require a neutral or impersonal room. Display a small collection, inherited object or distinctive artwork with enough surrounding space to be read. Character looks elevated when it is edited and given a clear position.

5. Add texture with rugs, cushions and throws

Texture gives a room depth that a flat color scheme cannot provide. Combine a few different surfaces—woven, nubby, smooth, matte or lightly reflective—so the room feels layered to both the eye and the touch.

Choose contrast with control

Pair a plain sofa with a patterned cushion, a tactile throw or a rug whose pile changes the room’s acoustics and visual weight. Avoid buying a complete matching cushion set; varied but related covers usually look more collected. Repeat one color from the rug or artwork in a smaller textile to connect the grouping.

Size textiles for the furniture

A tiny rug floating in the center of a large seating area makes the furniture look disconnected. Measure the arrangement first, then select the largest practical rug that lets key pieces sit on it or touch its edges. In a small room, a correctly scaled runner or compact rug is better than forcing an oversized design that blocks doors.

6. Layer lighting instead of relying on one ceiling fixture

Good lighting changes how paint, fabrics and finishes are perceived. Combine the room’s existing general light with task or accent sources such as table lamps, floor lamps, sconces or appropriately placed picture lights.

Create more than one level of light

Place a lamp near a reading chair, another on a console or side table, and accent light where artwork or architecture deserves attention. The sources should support the room’s activities rather than produce bright spots with dark gaps. Where the fixture and wiring permit, a dimmer adds control for different times of day.

Maintain the fixtures

Dust lampshades, replace damaged shades and keep bulbs working. Mismatched color temperatures can make a carefully coordinated room feel disjointed, so check that bulbs used together appear compatible. Lowe’s design guidance specifically includes dimmers, lamps and sconces as ways to improve the impression of a room.

7. Coordinate visible hardware and small finishes

Knobs, pulls, hinges, faucets, switches and sockets occupy small areas but repeat throughout a room. Monique Valeris of Good Housekeeping calls connecting hardware “an easy yet elegant way to add a sense of cohesion and luxury.” Artem Kropovinsky similarly recommends replacing cabinet, drawer, door or sink hardware with pieces that match the home’s style.

Choose a finish strategy

You can use one dominant finish—such as a particular metal—or combine finishes with a clear hierarchy. Repeat the chosen finish where it is visible, and consider the undertones of nearby paint, stone and wood. A single coordinated change in a kitchen or bathroom may have more impact than scattered decorative purchases.

Measure and verify before ordering

Record the distance between screw holes, the plate dimensions and the projection needed for comfortable use. For switches, sockets and faucets, confirm the product’s electrical or plumbing compatibility and local code requirements. Keep the original pieces if you rent or want a reversible update.

8. Hang art at a useful scale

Affordable, inherited and secondhand art can look sophisticated when its size and placement suit the room. Select the wall and nearby furniture together: a small print above a large sofa disappears, while an oversized piece can overwhelm a narrow passage.

Relate art to furniture

As a practical starting point, let a principal artwork or grouping occupy a substantial portion of the furniture width without extending far beyond it. Hang it at a comfortable eye level for the people who use the room, then adjust for seated viewing and the height of surrounding pieces.

Leave intentional negative space

Not every blank wall needs filling. One strong work with breathing room often looks more deliberate than many small items scattered across every surface. A mirror can be useful where it reflects light or a pleasant view; Jay Simon of Ten Ten Creative describes mirrors as adding “twinkly glamour, light, and the illusion of space.”

9. Use wallpaper or architectural detail selectively

A focused wall treatment, moulding, paneling or a painted architectural accent can add depth and make a plain room feel designed. Use it where the eye naturally lands—behind a bed, fireplace, dining banquette or entry console—rather than automatically covering every wall.

Match the treatment to the building

Check whether the surface is smooth, dry and sound before applying wallpaper or moulding. Uneven walls, dampness and poorly repaired joints will remain visible beneath a finish. A simple painted trim detail can be easier to reverse than permanent construction, while removable wallpaper may suit some rentals.

Plan installation and reversibility

Renters should review lease rules and keep samples of the original paint. Owners should account for alignment, corner details, adhesive removal and the time needed for filling, sanding and touch-ups. A limited application reduces cost and visual risk while still creating a focal point.

10. Give windows a finished treatment

Windows occupy large visual areas, so bare or poorly fitted coverings can make an otherwise polished room feel unfinished. Coordinate curtains, shades or blinds with the established palette and the room’s proportions.

Measure before choosing a style

Record window width, height, sill depth and the position of handles, radiators and nearby furniture. Full-length curtains can add height when there is clear wall below the sill, but they may crowd a small room or interfere with a desk, radiator or door. In those cases, a well-fitted shade or shorter treatment may be more practical.

Use fabric to support the room

Repeat a color or texture already present rather than introducing an unrelated pattern. Hang the rod securely and make sure panels reach the intended floor or sill line evenly. Clean, pressed fabric and accurate hems contribute as much to the finished impression as the pattern itself.

11. Maintain the details people notice first

Before buying decor, address the entry and the exterior details visible from the approach. Sweep the threshold, clear shoes and parcels, clean glass, and keep the entry light working. Inside, repair scuffed trim, replace dead bulbs and remove visible dust from ledges, vents and fixtures.

Make the outside support the inside

Healthy-looking planting, a tidy path and a maintained front door signal care before a visitor enters. Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors notes that planting a garden, hanging curtains or swapping light fixtures are small improvements that make a home look cared for and can influence how neighbors treat their surroundings.

Use a maintenance pass as your first budget

Walk through the home with a short checklist: clutter, chipped paint, loose handles, crooked frames, stained textiles, burned-out bulbs and dirty lampshades. Fix the visible, inexpensive problems first. New accessories cannot compensate for details that suggest neglect.

How to choose what to do first

If your budget or time is limited, prioritize by visibility, scale, coordination, reversibility and upkeep. Start with a clear entry view and the room’s main seating position, then work outward.

  1. Reset the room: remove clutter, repair obvious damage and test a better furniture arrangement.
  2. Set the anchors: choose or refine the wall color, rug and window treatment so they relate.
  3. Improve light: add or reposition lamps, clean shades and use compatible dimming where possible.
  4. Scale the layers: select a correctly sized rug, artwork and curtains before adding small accessories.
  5. Unify details: coordinate hardware and repeat a few materials or colors.
  6. Finish and maintain: complete the entry, exterior-facing details and a regular cleaning routine.

This sequence prevents a common expensive-looking mistake: buying attractive objects before the room’s layout, light and proportions are working. The result should feel coherent, comfortable and personal—not like a copy of a staged house.
