Make soft plastic fishing lures by heating lure-making plastisol and pouring it into an open mold or injecting it into a compatible injection mold. Once cool, the plastisol becomes a flexible bait you can remove from the mold. The material, mold, working temperature, and safety directions vary by product, so follow the instructions for the exact supplies you use.

Choose a lure-making method

Two common approaches use heated plastisol, but they require different molds and tools. Dip molding is another option offered for some formulations.

Method How it works What you need
Hand-pouring Pour heated plastisol into an open mold. Lure-making plastisol and a mold designed for hand-pouring; no injector is needed.
Injection molding Use an injector to push heated plastisol into a compatible injection mold. Lure-making plastisol, an injection mold, and a proper injector. Bugmolds describes its molds for use with heated plastisol and a proper injector.
Dip molding Dip a mold or form into plastisol, following the formulation maker’s directions. A plastisol formulation and mold or form suitable for dip molding. Chemionics says its lure formulations are designed for dip molding as well as hand-pouring and injection molding: Chemionics.

Neither hand-pouring nor injection is universally better; choose based on the mold and workflow you want to use.

Gather compatible materials and equipment

  • Plastisol: Choose a fishing-lure formulation suitable for your selected molding method. Chemionics describes lure formulations for injection, hand-pouring, and dip molding.
  • Mold: Match the mold to the bait shape and casting method. An injection mold needs an injector; an open hand-pour mold does not.
  • Heating and temperature monitoring: Use equipment appropriate for the product instructions. A high-temperature thermometer can help you track heat, but no single target or measurement method applies to every product.
  • Protective equipment: Prepare gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, and adequate ventilation as directed by the product’s label and safety data sheet.

Make the lure

  1. Read the instructions first. Check the current plastisol label and safety data sheet, along with the mold and equipment directions. Confirm the formulation is suitable for your method.
  2. Prepare the plastisol. Mix it if the maker directs you to. EnvironMolds warns that its plastisol settles and says to blend it thoroughly: EnvironMolds plastisol.
  3. Heat to the product’s stated working condition. Do not copy a temperature from a different brand or mold. For example, EnvironMolds gives about 325°F for its plastisol, while Bugmolds’ mold instructions give 356°F (180°C). These are supplier-specific directions, not a universal target. Follow the directions for your materials and equipment.
  4. Add color or other additives only as directed. Use only additives supported by the selected plastisol’s instructions; there is no established universal recipe or proportion.
  5. Fill the mold. Pour into an open hand-pour mold, or use the proper injector with an injection mold. Follow the mold maker’s directions for handling and filling.
  6. Let the bait cool, then demold it. Chemionics describes the cooled plastisol as soft and rubbery and removable from the mold: Chemionics plastisol process.
  7. Follow the product’s curing and storage advice. Do-It Molds recommends allowing its baits to cure for 24 hours before bagging or fishing: Do-It Molds. Treat that timing as specific to its guidance, not a rule for every plastisol.

Work safely around heated plastisol

Hot plastisol can burn. Supplier guidance recommends protective clothing, gloves, eye protection, and adequate ventilation; a separate tutorial also recommends strong ventilation or extraction and a suitable vapor-filtering mask. Consult the current safety data sheet and label for your exact product rather than treating another supplier’s advice as a complete safety protocol.

Keep supplies and work areas clean and store materials as their labels and safety documentation direct. Cleanup procedures vary, and a universal method is not established here.
