You can make a wearable Wolverine-inspired claw prop with a simple gravity slider, a servo-controlled mechanism, or a more complex pneumatic system. Choose based on your tools and the control you want; none of the documented builds establishes that its claws are safe for striking or stage combat.

The three approaches differ chiefly in how the claws move and what the wearer must carry. The sources describe individual projects, not controlled comparisons of cost, reliability, force, or durability.

For a low-electronics costume experiment, investigate the gravity slider. If you want a controlled extension and retraction, use a servo design and follow one project’s compatible parts, wiring, and code rather than mixing components by guesswork. The pneumatic example is a substantial wearable system, not a shortcut to a simple build.
How the gravity slider works
In the 2014 build summarized by Adafruit, shaped wooden dowels slide through an arm tube and an end tube. Gravity moves the claw; a thicker shoulder or stop catches at the end. The essential mechanical condition is clearance: the dowel must move freely through both tubes, while its stop must still catch.

Paint and foil add thickness, so check clearance with the finished surface in mind. Because Adafruit’s page is a secondary summary, use it to understand the concept, not as a substitute for the original tutorial’s dimensions or construction details. A binding slider can jam; test it repeatedly off-body before wearing it.
What an electronic build involves
Servo with sensor or muscle input
The Wolverino project describes printed housings and claws, elastic hand and forearm bands, a servo linkage, and microcontroller control. It documents an EMG version and a lower-cost force-sensitive-resistor version described as MMG-style control; the repository characterizes the latter as more temperamental. Review the project’s wiring, source files, and part availability before buying components.

MYOWARE muscle-sensor example
Advancer Technologies’ Mark O’Dell describes a build using a MYOWARE 2.0 muscle sensor, Arduino Pro Mini 5V, 180-degree servo, 7.2V NiMH battery pack, wrist guard, servo wire and linkage, and printed parts. In that tutorial, forearm flex extends the 4-inch claws and relaxation retracts them; a sustained flex activates lock mode. Its approximately 2.5-hour completion time is the publisher’s estimate, not a guaranteed build time.
These are project-specific component choices, not a universal bill of materials. Before purchase, check controller and sensor compatibility, battery and servo requirements, servo travel, enclosure dimensions, and the wiring and code for the exact design you intend to follow.

What the pneumatic example adds
Khouri’s 2022 costume uses a backpack-mounted assembly described as including an air compressor, LiFePO4 battery, pressure transducer, tank, regulator, and solenoid valve. The maker reports switch-operated extension and retraction of 10-inch-long claws. That description documents one costume project; it is not an independent performance test or evidence that the system is safe to operate on a person.

Build and test it as a costume prop
The cited projects do not establish safe forces, durability, or suitability for combat. Keep the goal to costume wear and visual effect, not impact or use as a weapon.

- Keep claws blunt and lightweight, and add mechanical travel stops.
- Guard pinch points and test the mechanism off-body before wearing it.
- Power down before adjusting or clearing an electronic mechanism. The MYOWARE tutorial specifically recommends a delay to reduce accidental pinching while connecting the battery and suggests a switch between the battery and harness.
- Do not swing, poke, or jab the claws at people or animals. Hasbro gives that warning for its own role-play toy; it is not a safety certification for homemade props.
A ready-made role-play alternative
For readers who want a wearable effect without fabricating a mechanism, Hasbro lists the Marvel Studios X-Men ’97 Wolverine Slash Action Claw, item F7975. Its official page describes a 7-inch extension, adjustable wrist strap, and age rating of 5+; availability varies. It is a role-play toy, not a substitute for a custom engineering project.
