The best way to make YouTube channel art is to design a 2,560 × 1,440 px banner, keep every important element inside a centered safe area, and preview it on desktop, mobile, and TV layouts before publishing. YouTube uses one banner image across devices, but each device displays and crops it differently. For a painting channel, that means your name, logo, face, artwork, and short description must remain visible even when the outer edges disappear.

In this guide, you’ll learn what channel art includes, how to plan and design a banner, which export settings to use, how to upload it in YouTube Studio, and what to do when the image looks cropped, blurry, or too large.

What is YouTube channel art?

YouTube channel art usually means the large channel banner—also called a YouTube banner, cover image, or cover photo—displayed across the top of a channel page.

It is separate from other YouTube branding elements:

  • Profile picture or channel icon: Your circular or square identity image.
  • Video watermark: A separate branding element that can appear on videos in eligible placements.
  • Video thumbnails: Images created for individual videos.
  • Channel trailer and homepage sections: Layout and content elements, not part of the banner file.

YouTube’s official branding guidance treats these components separately. This article focuses on the channel banner.

Current YouTube banner size and safe area

Requirement Current guidance
Recommended canvas 2,560 × 1,440 pixels
Minimum upload size 2,048 × 1,152 pixels
Aspect ratio 16:9
Maximum file size 6 MB
Official safe area at the minimum canvas 1,235 × 338 pixels
Approximate safe area at 2,560 × 1,440 1,544 × 423 pixels

The important detail is not just the canvas size. YouTube crops or presents the banner differently on computers, phones, and TVs. Keep your channel name, logo, tagline, face, featured painting, and any other essential information in the central safe area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube officially gives the safe area as 1,235 × 338 pixels on the minimum 2,048 × 1,152 canvas. The approximately 1,544 × 423 pixel figure for a 2,560 × 1,440 canvas is a mathematical scaling of those dimensions—not a separate official YouTube specification.

For the underlying requirements, see YouTube’s current banner guidance.

What should your banner communicate?

A viewer should understand your channel’s subject and style almost immediately. A strong painting-channel banner might communicate:

  • What you paint: landscapes, portraits, watercolors, oils, acrylics, or digital art.
  • Who the channel is for: beginners, working artists, collectors, or art students.
  • What viewers can expect: tutorials, studio tours, painting demonstrations, critiques, or time-lapse videos.
  • Your recognizable visual identity: a logo, signature, palette, mascot, workspace, or portrait.

Start with a one-sentence brief:

“This banner should make beginning painters understand that this channel helps them paint expressive landscapes through clear watercolor tutorials.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then reduce that idea to one short headline or positioning statement. Your banner is not a replacement for the channel description. Avoid filling it with a paragraph, a long list of services, or every social-media link you use.

Useful banner elements

  • Channel name or logo.
  • A short subject label, such as “Watercolor Landscapes” or “Oil Painting Tutorials.”
  • A recognizable painting, brush, palette, workspace, or creator portrait.
  • An upload schedule, only if you can maintain it reliably.
  • A website or social handle, if it is genuinely useful and remains readable.

Keep the hierarchy simple: one primary identifier, one short promise, one main visual subject, and a restrained accent color.

How to design YouTube channel art

1. Choose a design tool

You can create a banner from scratch in a professional graphics editor, use a simple image editor, or begin with a template. Canva’s YouTube banner maker provides banner templates and an editor for uploading brand assets.

Approach Best for Trade-off
Template editor Beginners and quick first drafts Fast, but the result may look generic and some template elements may have plan or licensing restrictions.
Professional graphics editor Distinctive branding and precise typography More control, but a steeper learning curve.
Basic image editor Simple text, resizing, and photo-based banners Less control over layers, guides, and reusable brand assets.
Designer A complete visual identity across banners, thumbnails, and profiles Higher service complexity; verify scope, ownership, and deliverables before hiring.

Do not assume a tool, template, font, photograph, or illustration is free for every use. Check the relevant license, particularly if your channel is commercial.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

2. Create the correct canvas

  1. Open your design tool.
  2. Create a custom canvas of 2,560 × 1,440 pixels.
  3. Set the document to a 16:9 aspect ratio if the tool asks for one.
  4. Add a temporary guide or overlay for the central safe area.
  5. Keep all essential content inside that guide.

On the recommended canvas, use an approximately 1,544 × 423 pixel centered region for important content. If your software lets you enter guide positions, place the safe-area boundaries symmetrically around the canvas center. Remove or hide the guides before exporting.

3. Build a background that survives cropping

Use the full canvas for a coherent background: a color field, gradient, textured paper, studio photograph, painting detail, or atmospheric scenery. Extend the background beyond the safe area so the banner still looks intentional when a phone displays only the middle portion.

For a painting channel, a close-up of brushstrokes can create texture, while a softly blurred studio or landscape can provide context without competing with the title. Avoid placing a busy section directly behind small text.

4. Place the identity in the center

Keep these elements within the safe area:

  • Channel name.
  • Logo or signature.
  • Tagline or short promise.
  • Main portrait, product, or painting subject.
  • Upload schedule.
  • Any call to action or text viewers must read.

Keep nonessential content outside it:

  • Decorative patterns.
  • Abstract shapes.
  • Extra scenery.
  • Texture and paint splatters.
  • Background objects that can be cropped without changing the meaning.

Do not place a face, logo, or headline close to an outer edge. The full canvas may be visible on a wide TV layout, while a phone may show a much narrower central crop.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

5. Make the typography readable

  • Use a bold, legible typeface.
  • Limit the banner to a short headline or a few words.
  • Choose strong contrast against the background.
  • Avoid thin weights, tightly spaced letters, and long paragraphs.
  • Use one or two typefaces rather than treating the banner like a poster full of competing styles.
  • Check the design at a reduced size before exporting.

YouTube does not prescribe a particular font or font size in the cited guidance. These are practical design recommendations, not platform requirements. If the headline cannot be read without zooming, simplify it or increase its contrast.

6. Choose imagery you can legally use

Good choices include an original photograph, a creator-owned illustration, a licensed stock image, or a simple abstract background. Do not assume that an image found through a search engine is free to use. Be especially careful with celebrity photographs, movie stills, sports imagery, brand logos, and stock assets with restricted licenses.

Use a high-resolution source. Enlarging a small social-media image, screenshot, or downloaded thumbnail can make the finished banner look soft even when the canvas dimensions are correct.

Safe-area example: what goes where?

Think of your banner as two overlapping regions:

  • Full 2,560 × 1,440 canvas: Backgrounds, color, texture, scenery, and decorative elements.
  • Central approximately 1,544 × 423 safe area: Channel name, logo, headline, face, main subject, schedule, and essential information.

An incorrect layout might place the channel name at the far left and a portrait at the far right. Those elements may appear on a wide screen but disappear in a narrow crop. A correct layout keeps the identity grouped in the middle and uses the outer canvas to add visual atmosphere.

Export the banner correctly

Before exporting, check:

  • The canvas is exactly 2,560 × 1,440 pixels.
  • The aspect ratio is 16:9.
  • All important content fits inside the safe area.
  • The final file is under 6 MB.
  • The export is the full-size artwork, not a small preview.
  • Safe-area guides and overlay marks are hidden or removed.
  • High-resolution logos and photographs were used.

JPEG or PNG?

JPEG is often practical for photographic banners because it can produce a smaller file. PNG can be useful for crisp text, flat graphics, and logos. Choose based on the artwork and file size rather than assuming one format is always best. The YouTube Data API documentation lists JPEG and PNG among accepted MIME types, while the consumer upload interface remains the final reference for the current Studio workflow.

If the file is too large, export a photographic design as JPEG, reduce JPEG quality moderately, remove unnecessary photographic detail, or flatten unused layers. Do not repeatedly resize the same file; export once from the full-resolution source at the final dimensions.

See the YouTube Data API banner documentation for the documented technical constraints.

How to upload channel art in YouTube Studio

On a computer, use this current official path:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. In the left menu, select Customization.
  3. Select Profile.
  4. Under the banner image, click Change.
  5. Select your banner file.
  6. Inspect the preview for the different device layouts.
  7. Replace or adjust the image if important content is cropped.
  8. Click Done.
  9. Click Publish.

The updated banner should appear at the top of your channel after publishing. YouTube notes that some branding updates may take a few minutes to appear.

How to change the banner on iPhone or iPad

YouTube’s official mobile instructions use this general flow:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Your channel.
  3. Tap EDIT, or the edit control associated with the banner.
  4. Tap the banner image.
  5. Choose a photo or image to upload.
  6. Save the change.

Labels and screen layouts can vary by app version and device. If the mobile controls are difficult to locate, the desktop YouTube Studio path is the clearest documented workflow.

Optional: update a banner through the YouTube Data API

Most creators do not need the API. For developers, agencies, or automated multi-channel workflows, Google documents a three-step process:

  1. Call channelBanners.insert to upload the binary image.
  2. Extract the returned image URL.
  3. Call channels.update and set brandingSettings.image.bannerExternalUrl.

The API documentation specifies a 16:9 image, at least 2,048 × 1,152 pixels, preferably 2,560 × 1,440 pixels, and a maximum size of 6 MB. The channelBanners.insert operation has a quota cost of 50 units and requires one of the documented authorization scopes. Follow the API reference for authorization and request details.

Test the published result on every layout

Do not judge the banner only inside your design tool. Check the preview for:

  • Desktop: Confirm that the composition is balanced and the text is readable.
  • Mobile: Confirm that the channel name, logo, face, and headline remain visible.
  • TV or the widest available preview: Check that the outer background does not look empty, stretched, or accidentally cut off.
  • The public channel page: Confirm the live result after publishing.

Different device presentations are an expected part of YouTube’s banner system, not necessarily an upload error.

Fix common YouTube banner problems

“My banner looks fine in the editor but is cut off on mobile”

The usual cause is that essential content sits outside the safe area or that you checked only the desktop presentation.

  1. Reopen the source design.
  2. Move essential elements toward the center.
  3. Confirm that the canvas is 2,560 × 1,440 pixels.
  4. Keep the main content within approximately 1,544 × 423 pixels.
  5. Re-export and inspect the mobile preview again.

“YouTube says the file is too large”

  • Use JPEG for a photographic design.
  • Reduce JPEG quality moderately.
  • Remove unnecessary texture or photographic detail.
  • Flatten unused layers before export.
  • Confirm that the final exported file—not the editable project—is below 6 MB.

“The banner is blurry”

Possible causes include a low-resolution source, excessive enlargement, a small preview export, repeated resizing, platform processing, or rasterized text and logos that were too small.

Work at 2,560 × 1,440 pixels, use high-resolution source material, avoid enlarging small images, and compare the source and published preview at the same display size. YouTube’s specifications establish recommended and minimum dimensions but do not guarantee pixel-perfect appearance after platform processing.

“The logo is hidden”

The logo may be outside the safe area or positioned where a device-specific crop removes it. Move it into the centered safe area, then check the desktop, mobile, and widest available previews.

“The banner looks empty on TV”

This usually means the design uses only the center strip and leaves the rest of the canvas blank. Keep the important information centered, but use the full 2,560 × 1,440 canvas for a background that remains visually coherent when more of the image is visible.

“The image uploads but will not publish”

Check the file size, dimensions, extension, and actual file type. Also check that the upload has finished processing, your account has the required permissions, and the browser or app is displaying the latest Studio state. Refresh the page or try another browser or the desktop Studio workflow if necessary. Avoid assuming a specific platform bug without documentation.

Special case: Official Artist Channels

Official Artist Channels can have additional banner behavior. The standard creator banner instructions apply to computer and mobile, while banners shown on TV and YouTube Music may follow a separate path in YouTube Studio. If your channel is an Official Artist Channel, use the relevant instructions in YouTube’s branding help page rather than assuming the ordinary creator workflow covers every placement.
