Pressed-metal ceilings look convincing when the perimeter cornice, corner mitres, linear rails and decorative frieze are treated as one coordinated assembly. Matching only the central panel pattern is not enough: relief depth, profile size, corner geometry, material and the way each piece meets the next determine whether a repair preserves the room’s character.
This guide explains what each component does, how to record an existing ceiling, which material questions to ask, and how to brief a specialist supplier or installer.

What the four pressed-metal components do
Historic ceiling schemes commonly combine a field of repeated panels with filler strips, perimeter molding and a decorative border. The four terms describe different parts of that composition, although suppliers may use slightly different product names.
Cornice
A pressed metal cornice finishes the ceiling-to-wall transition. It can conceal the edge of field panels, establish the room’s visual scale and provide the final shadow line around the perimeter. A replacement cornice that is too shallow, too wide or from a different period style can make an otherwise accurate ceiling look wrong.

Mitre
A pressed-metal mitre is the angled or corner finishing piece used where a linear profile changes direction. The exact shape depends on the profile and the corner: a simple 90-degree internal corner, an external corner, a splayed bay or an irregular heritage room may each require a different solution. Confirm the profile and corner geometry with the supplier rather than assuming every “mitre” is interchangeable.
Rail
A rail is a linear pressed-metal trim. Rails can separate ceiling fields, frame a panel arrangement or act as a cover strip over a joint. Australian Pressed Metal lists rails and cover strips among its historical reproduction products, but widths, relief and joining details vary by pattern.
Frieze
A pressed metal ceiling frieze is a decorative band or border, usually placed between the main ceiling field and the perimeter cornice or along a wall. Sydney Pressed Metal lists frieze panels as a distinct product category. Friezes often carry more visual information than a plain filler, so their repeat, orientation and relief need to align at every change of direction.
Why the complete assembly matters
The National Park Service’s preservation guidance treats the field panels, molding, filler and wall cornice as parts of a single historic ceiling design. Removing a border or substituting a generic trim can change the proportions and rhythm of the room even when the central pattern remains.
Start by identifying what survives, not by shopping for a visually similar tile. Photograph the ceiling from the centre and from each wall, then capture close views of transitions, corners, damaged sections and any unpainted or less-worn areas. Keep loose original pieces as physical references. They reveal the pressed profile more reliably than a photograph taken at an angle.

How to match an existing pressed-metal ceiling
1. Record the architectural context
- Note whether the work is an interior ceiling, a wall border, an exterior awning, a soffit or a fascia. Product ranges and installation exposure differ between these situations.
- Identify the ceiling’s architectural style and approximate period if known. A replacement should stay within the same style rather than combining an unrelated modern motif with historic panels.
- Map every component in sequence: field panel, filler, rail, frieze, cornice and corner piece. Mark where the pattern starts and where it changes direction.
- Photograph junctions at normal viewing distance and close range. Include a scale, ruler or tape in detail photographs so a supplier can judge relief and width.
2. Measure the profile, not just the face width
Measure the visible face, return legs, overall projection and the distance between fixing edges. Record the repeat length of the pattern and the spacing between rails or frieze panels. Measure several locations because old ceilings can bow, settle or contain repairs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a cornice, record the ceiling-side and wall-side returns separately, the projection from the wall and the angle of the transition. For a rail or frieze, record the panel width, repeat, border margins and the direction in which the motif runs. Matching nominal width while ignoring the returns can leave gaps at the wall or force the field panels out of alignment.
3. Compare relief and proportion
The National Park Service emphasizes that repoussé depth can be as character-defining as the pattern itself. Compare the highest point of the embossing, the sharpness of the folds and the width of flat margins around the motif. A shallow modern reproduction may have the right flowers or geometry but still look incorrect beside a deeply pressed original.
4. Resolve corners and transitions before ordering
Lay out the corner conditions on a sketch or measured plan. Show internal and external corners, chimney breasts, beams, alcoves and any changes in wall angle. Ask whether the supplier will provide purpose-made mitres, a longer blank for site forming, or a jointing method for the selected profile. Do not assume a standard 45-degree cut will produce a clean result on a profiled strip.
5. Check the pattern direction
Many friezes and rails have a clear up-direction or a repeating centre. Mark the intended orientation on the plan and on each retained reference piece. Reversing a border at one wall can be more noticeable than a small colour difference.

Material choices: relief, durability and availability
The material must be selected with the existing relief, the exposure and the supplier’s pressing capability in mind. The preservation guidance says aluminum is generally better suited to low-to-moderate relief and less complex patterns, while deeper historic relief can constrain the choice and may favour steel. Australian suppliers describe aluminum as a standard current material and offer specialty metals by order; neither statement guarantees that every profile can be made in every alloy.
| Material | Where it may fit | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Steel or tin-plated steel | Often the closest direction for deeply pressed historic relief and robust interior reproductions. | Whether the supplier can press the required depth, how the piece will be protected from corrosion, and the fixing method. |
| Aluminum | A commonly offered current material for low-to-moderate relief and many standard decorative profiles. | Whether the pattern’s depth and detail are within the supplier’s tooling capability and whether the finish will sit comfortably beside existing metal. |
| Copper | A specialty option used where its colour, patina or workability is part of the design brief. | Availability for the exact profile, surface finish, patination expectations and compatibility with adjacent metals. |
| Brass | A specialty decorative option listed by some suppliers for selected products. | Whether the profile is offered in brass, the required quantity and how the visible surface will be finished. |
| Zinc or another specialty metal | Possible by supplier order for particular restoration or design requirements. | Pressing suitability, lead time, finish, weight and local installation requirements. |
These are design and sourcing decisions, not a universal ranking. Ask for a sample or an off-cut when colour, sheen or relief is critical. A supplier should confirm the actual gauge, profile dimensions, finish and current availability for your project rather than relying on a catalogue image.
Interior, exterior and code considerations
A ceiling inside a dry room, an exterior awning and a ventilated soffit have different exposure and support needs. The supplier examples associated with heritage reproduction cover both interior and exterior applications, but service scope and suitable products differ. State the location, ventilation, moisture exposure and whether the surface is heated, enclosed or accessible when requesting a quotation.
The National Park Service guidance is U.S.-focused and dates from 2017. It is useful for conservation principles, but it does not replace Australian building regulations, fire-separation requirements, project engineering or the selected manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm local requirements before fabrication, particularly where a ceiling forms part of a required fire-resisting assembly.

Sydney Pressed Metal currently describes friezes, mitres, cornices and ceiling panels, together with supply, installation, repair and restoration services for Sydney and selected New South Wales projects depending on scope. It asks prospective clients for photographs, approximate dimensions and project location. Australian Pressed Metal and Brisbane Pressed Metal also describe heritage reproduction ranges that include cornices, rails, mitres and panels. Service areas, profiles and metals change, so obtain written confirmation before assuming a listed item is still available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support and installation planning
Pressed metal is a finish, not a substitute for a sound substrate. The preservation guidance describes nailing strips or plywood substrates in relevant situations and notes that additional wood blocking may be needed to support cornices or other decorative elements. These examples are not universal instructions: substrate condition, profile weight, access and local code determine the correct assembly.
- Inspect the existing ceiling and framing for movement, damp, corrosion and loose material. Resolve the cause of damage before covering it.
- Agree the substrate and fixing layout with the selected manufacturer or installer. Identify where nailing strips, plywood or blocking will be installed.
- Dry-lay representative lengths and corner pieces to check repeat, orientation and alignment before permanent fixing.
- Install field panels, fillers, rails, friezes and cornices in the sequence recommended for the chosen system. Keep joints and fasteners consistent with the visible historic work.
- Check every corner and transition as it is completed; correcting a misplaced mitre later can require removing several adjoining lengths.
- Obtain confirmation that the finished assembly meets applicable fire-separation and building requirements.
Do not copy a generic nail spacing or adhesive method from another project. The selected supplier’s instructions and the installer’s assessment of the substrate take precedence.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStock tiles versus bespoke reproduction
“Pressed tin ceiling tiles” is a useful broad search term for decorative metal panels sold to consumers. Stock tiles can suit a new decorative ceiling where an exact historic match is not required. They should not be treated as a direct substitute for bespoke cornices, mitres, rails or friezes: standard tiles rarely reproduce an unusual relief, return dimension, corner condition or border repeat.
Choose a specialist reproduction route when the objective is to preserve an existing room, continue a rare pattern or replace missing perimeter pieces. A general tile purchase may be faster for a new design, but it cannot solve a profile mismatch at the wall or a mitre that was never designed for the room.

Common failure modes and practical fixes
The motif matches but the ceiling still looks wrong
The relief, flat margins or component proportions may differ. Compare side-on profile photographs and measure projection and returns, not only the printed pattern.
Corners open or form a visible lump
The selected mitre may not match the profile, or the wall angle may not be exactly 90 degrees. Send measured corner geometry and request a purpose-made corner or a supplier-approved forming method.
The frieze finishes short at one wall
The starting point or repeat was not set out before ordering. Establish a centreline and pattern direction, then calculate end cuts and filler lengths from the measured room rather than from nominal panel counts.
New metal looks disconnected from retained work
Material, sheen and relief may be inconsistent. Request samples, compare them in the room’s actual light and decide whether the brief calls for a close new-metal match or a deliberately distinguishable repair.
Trim loosens after installation
Movement, inadequate blocking or a weak substrate may be responsible. Have the installer inspect support and moisture conditions; adding surface fasteners alone may not correct the underlying problem.
A decision checklist before you approve fabrication
- Does the proposed cornice match the original projection, returns and relief?
- Are mitres specified for every internal, external and irregular corner?
- Do rail and frieze repeats align with the field panels and room centreline?
- Has the supplier confirmed material, gauge, finish and pressing capability for this exact profile?
- Are supply, installation, repair and restoration responsibilities clearly separated in the quotation?
- Has the substrate, blocking and fire-separation approach been reviewed for the project location?
- Have photographs, measurements, retained samples and pattern-direction notes been shared?
- Has current stock, lead time and service-area coverage been confirmed in writing?
The Architecture & Design feature that brought these components together was published on 10 August 2017 and credited Sydney Pressed Metal. Treat that article as a historical product-news reference, not as a current catalogue. For a present-day project, the reliable path is a measured brief, a profile comparison and written confirmation from a specialist supplier.
