Select the element, then drag it from its interior to the new location. For precise placement, select it and press an arrow key; hold Shift with an arrow key for a larger nudge. This works for text boxes, photos, shapes, illustrations, videos, frames, charts, stickers, and grouped objects, although controls vary by device and design type.
What Canva means by “element”
In Canva, an element is almost any object placed on a page: a shape, line, icon, illustration, sticker, photo, video, frame, grid, chart, text box, or group. Moving the object on the page is different from moving an image inside a frame, changing its layer order, moving it to another page, or rearranging an entire page.
#1 Best Overall
Canva’s editor labels and toolbar locations can change with the design type, screen size, app version, and interface updates. If you do not see Position, look for Layers, Arrange, or an overflow menu. Canva’s editing overview is at Canva Help.
Move one element on desktop
- Open the design in Canva.
- Click the object once. A selection box and handles should appear.
- Place the pointer inside the object, away from corner and side handles.
- Click and drag to the new location, using Canva’s alignment guides as visual references.
- Release the mouse button.
The object should change position without changing size or rotation. Dragging a corner or side handle resizes it instead. Double-clicking can enter text-editing, image-crop, or another specialized mode; in that case, press Esc, select the outer object, and drag again. Canva explains the distinction between selecting and editing text in its text help.
Move an element in the Canva mobile app
- Open the design in the Canva app or mobile editor.
- Tap the element until its selection outline appears.
- Keep your finger on the selected object and drag it.
- Lift your finger at the desired position.
For difficult selections, pinch to zoom in and tap an exposed part of the object. When objects overlap, Canva may select the topmost one. Use the mobile toolbar or overflow menu for Position, Layers, Lock, or Arrange when those controls are available. Mobile gestures and toolbar placement are not identical to desktop; Canva provides device-specific guidance in its Help Center.
Move an element precisely
Free dragging is quickest for approximate placement. For fine adjustments:
- Select the element rather than editing its contents.
- Press the left, right, up, or down arrow key to nudge it.
- Hold Shift while pressing an arrow key to move it farther per keystroke.
Canva’s official shortcut pages confirm these commands, but do not promise one universal pixel distance: movement can depend on the current editor and interface. See the official shortcut reference if a shortcut behaves differently.

For alignment, open Position (or Arrange) and use commands such as align left, right, top, or bottom; center horizontally or vertically; and distribute multiple objects evenly. Where supported, Position can also expose layer controls and numeric rotation. Canva’s rotation help notes that some design types, including Canva Docs, have different transformation support.
Move several elements together
To make a temporary multi-selection, select the first object, hold Shift, and select the others. Drag any selected object and the selection moves together.
For a permanent unit, group the objects:
- Select all related objects.
- Choose Group from the toolbar or context menu.
- Move the group as one object.
- Use Ungroup when you need to edit a component separately.
Official shortcuts are Command/Ctrl + G to group and Command/Ctrl + Shift + G to ungroup. Grouping preserves spacing and prevents accidental shifts, but it can make individual selection harder; enter the group or ungroup it when necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Changing an object’s location and changing its stacking order are separate operations. If an element seems missing, it may be underneath another object. Select it, then use Position, Layers, or Arrange to choose Move forward, Move backward, Bring to front, or Send to back.
| Action | macOS | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Move forward | Command + ] | Ctrl + ] |
| Move backward | Command + [ | Ctrl + [ |
| Bring to front | Option + Command + ] | Alt + Ctrl + ] |
| Send to back | Option + Command + [ | Alt + Ctrl + [ |
These commands affect visibility and layer order, not the object’s canvas coordinates. Canva lists them in its keyboard-shortcut reference.

Move a locked element
A locked object normally cannot be repositioned. Select it if possible, click the Lock icon or the relevant menu command, unlock it, move it, and lock it again if needed. The exact control depends on the editor and account. Canva’s current pricing comparison shows locking as a plan feature, but availability can vary by country, account, and product updates; do not assume a specific plan is required without checking your own editor.
If another object covers the locked item, use Layers/Arrange, temporarily move the covering object, or select the item from the layer list.

Move an image inside a frame or grid
A frame and its image have separate positions:
- Move the frame: select the frame’s outer boundary and drag it.
- Reposition the image: enter crop/edit mode, then drag the image inside the frame.
The frame can remain fixed while the image shifts to improve the crop. Do not drag the outer frame when you only want to change the photo’s composition. Canva’s frame and crop guidance covers this distinction.
Move an element to another page
Select the object and use copy and paste, or cut and paste, onto the destination page. You can also duplicate it and move the duplicate. Copying generally preserves formatting, but verify animations, video timing, links, charts, and other specialized behavior after pasting. If you want the entire composition elsewhere, duplicate or rearrange the page instead of moving each element individually.
Why can’t I move an element?
- It is locked: unlock it before dragging.
- You selected the wrong object: zoom in, tap or click an exposed area, or use Layers.
- Another object covers it: temporarily move the top object or change layer order.
- You are editing text or cropping an image: press Esc and select the outer object.
- It belongs to a group: move the group or ungroup it.
- You are dragging a handle: start from the object’s interior to move rather than resize.
- It is a specialized component: charts, grids, frames, and some document types have distinct editing modes.
- The app or browser is stuck: undo, reload Canva, update the app, or try another supported browser.
If an object disappears after moving, press Command/Ctrl + Z, inspect Layers, bring it to the front, and check the page edges in case it was dragged outside the visible canvas. For major unintended changes, use version history where your account and design type provide it.

Keyboard shortcuts for moving Canva elements
| Action | macOS | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Nudge up, down, left, or right | Arrow key | Arrow key |
| Larger nudge | Shift + arrow key | Shift + arrow key |
| Group | Command + G | Ctrl + G |
| Ungroup | Command + Shift + G | Ctrl + Shift + G |
| Select next/previous element | Tab / Shift + Tab | Tab / Shift + Tab |
The canvas must have focus and the object must be selected. Shortcuts can be intercepted when you are typing inside a text box, and Canva may revise them, so confirm against the current official reference.
Quick method by goal
- Fast placement: drag from the object’s interior.
- Pixel-level visual correction: use arrow keys, then Shift plus an arrow key for larger steps.
- Equal spacing or centering: use Position and alignment/distribution commands.
- Keep a layout intact: group related objects first.
- Reveal a hidden object: use Layers or Bring to front.
- Change a photo’s crop: edit the image inside the frame, not the frame itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move text boxes in Canva?
Yes. Click or tap the text box once, then drag from its interior. Double-clicking edits the text instead of moving the box.
How do I move an image without resizing it?
Select the image and drag from its body, not a corner or side handle. Handles resize the image.
How do I move several elements at once?
Multi-select with Shift and drag, or group the objects with Command/Ctrl + G.
Why is my Canva element locked?
Unlock it from the Lock control or relevant menu, move it, and lock it again if necessary. Availability of locking controls can vary by account and plan.
How do I move an image inside a frame?
Enter crop/edit mode and drag the image within the frame. Dragging the outer boundary moves the frame itself.
Can I move an element to another page?
Copy and paste or cut and paste it onto the destination page, then verify specialized content such as animations or video timing.
How do I bring an element to the front?
Select it and choose Bring to front in Position, Layers, or Arrange. On the official shortcuts, use Option + Command + ] on Mac or Alt + Ctrl + ] on Windows.
Can I move Canva elements with a keyboard?
Yes. Select the element and use arrow keys; Shift plus an arrow key makes a larger move. The canvas must have focus.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I undo a misplaced element?
Press Command/Ctrl + Z, or use Canva’s Undo control.
Why can’t I move elements in Canva Docs?
Canva Docs has design-specific editing limitations. If a transformation is unavailable, check Canva’s current help for that document type rather than assuming graphic-design editor controls apply.
The Bottom Line
For most Canva designs, select the object and drag from its interior. Use arrow keys or Position for precision, Layers for hidden objects, grouping for coordinated layouts, and crop mode when you need to reposition an image inside a frame.
