You can try opening an .ai file in Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or Photopea—but whether it opens, and what remains editable, depends on how the file was saved and which Illustrator features it uses. Adobe says other apps can access the PDF-compatible part of an AI file, not full Illustrator compatibility. For viewing or sharing, ask the creator for a PDF; for continued vector work, ask whether SVG or EPS suits your next app.
Why some AI files open in other apps—and others do not
The .ai extension alone does not tell you whether another program can read the artwork. Adobe describes AI as Illustrator’s proprietary format; third-party apps may be able to read PDF-compatible content embedded in the file. Adobe cautions that those apps open only the PDF part, not the complete native Illustrator document. Adobe explains the compatibility limits.

Even when the file opens, expect to inspect it. Some details may be missing or changed, and artwork can be rasterized rather than retained as editable vectors. Effects, transparency, gradient meshes, fonts, and linked images are all worth checking. Opening successfully is not proof that the file is a faithful or fully editable copy.
Try an AI file in a desktop app
- Make a copy. Keep the original untouched and use the copy for opening or conversion attempts.
- Try Inkscape. Inkscape documents opening AI and PDF files. Its Wiki notes that gradient meshes are approximated using lattices of small paths and that transparency modes do not work. See Inkscape’s AI-file compatibility notes.
- Try Affinity Designer. Affinity says its apps display the embedded PDF-compatible stream in an AI file. If the file has no PDF content, this method will not work. Read Affinity’s import guidance.
- Inspect the result. Check the whole composition, including text, colors, transparency, gradients, placed images, and details near the edges. If an important element is missing or altered, do not treat the opened copy as a reliable production file.
Try a browser-based option
Photopea
Photopea has announced support for opening Illustrator files, making it a convenient browser-based attempt when you do not want to install a desktop app. Its own site says it is not a professional vector editor or a full Illustrator replacement, so use it as a compatibility option—not a guarantee that the artwork will display or remain editable exactly as intended. Choose a handoff format for your actual goal

If you only need to see or send the design, request a PDF. If you need to continue vector work, ask the creator which export—SVG or EPS, for example—best fits your next application. Adobe’s supported-file-formats page was last updated 11 February 2026; that date refers to the page, not to a compatibility guarantee for a particular file. Check Adobe’s format documentation.

Ask the person who supplied it whether it was saved with PDF compatibility enabled. If not, ask them to resave it with that option or export a PDF for viewing. For further vector editing, ask for an SVG or EPS only if your receiving app supports the format. Then open the new file and inspect it rather than assuming the export preserved every object.

Adobe’s documentation makes the central limitation clear: other applications may access only the PDF portion of an AI file and may not retain Illustrator-specific editing capabilities. Compatibility therefore depends both on the way the file was saved and on the artwork inside it; an import attempt is not a substitute for checking the result.
