How to Paint a Custom Forest Landscape on Furniture with Stencils

Create a forest scene on a dresser without freehanding every tree: prepare the surface, cut an irregular vinyl mountain mask, offset two painted horizons, and stencil trees from distant light silhouettes to a dark focal foreground.

You can turn a dresser into a layered forest scene without drawing every tree freehand. Paint the cabinet a deep color, use a cut vinyl or shelf-paper mask to create two irregular mountain horizons, and stencil trees in progressively darker tones. Offset the horizons from drawer to drawer so the landscape reads as depth rather than a repeated stripe. The featured project’s author used this approach on a dresser and says it made a landscape manageable even though she did not consider herself a landscape artist; that is her project experience, not a guarantee that every piece will be effortless.

The method below follows that dresser project, then separates the choices that are specific to it from general stencil practices. You will find the exact order of operations, a supply list, surface-preparation decisions, layout guidance for different furniture sizes, and fixes for common bleeding or alignment problems.

What the finished forest design is built from

Think of the dresser as one connected canvas. The drawer fronts form a horizontal panorama while the cabinet body supplies a dark frame. In the example, the body is painted a deep charcoal-like shade and the drawers retain a wood-grounded landscape palette. Two mountain ridges establish distance: a lighter rear ridge and a darker foreground ridge. The tree silhouettes then reinforce that depth.

  • Short, small trees sit along the lighter, farther ridge.
  • A larger focal tree is reserved for visual emphasis rather than scattering every tree at the same size.
  • Taller trees line the darker lower ridge to make the foreground feel closer.
  • The two horizons are deliberately offset, not aligned from drawer to drawer.

The maker’s guiding attitude is useful when cutting an organic horizon: “Perfection does not matter! In fact, the more organic, the more realistic it will look.” — Funky Junk Donna, author of the featured project tutorial. A slightly uneven mountain line can look intentional; a perfectly repeated line is more likely to reveal that the same mask was simply copied without variation.

Supplies for the dresser version

These are the materials named for the featured project. They are a source-project supply list, not a mandatory brand kit. Match the quantity and dimensions to your furniture.

Supply Role in the project Practical note
Wood-grain dresser with drawer fronts Connected canvas for the landscape Measure every drawer front; widths can vary even on one dresser.
Fusion Mineral Paint in Cast Iron Deep cabinet color and darker foreground horizon Use the coating’s own preparation and curing directions.
Fusion Mineral Paint in Chestnut Mare Lighter mountain ridge and area beneath that ridge Choose a contrasting value so the rear layer remains visibly lighter.
Christmas Trees and Christmas Tree Seedling stencils from Old Sign Stencils Tree silhouettes in different scales Lay out the sizes before painting and reserve one focal-tree position.
Dome-tip stencil brush Applies paint through the tree stencils A dedicated stencil brush helps control how much paint reaches the openings.
Sign-making vinyl or shelf paper Temporary mask for a custom mountain horizon Use a piece large enough to span the intended drawer width.
Craft knife and fine-tip marker Draw and cut the irregular mountain edge The project author prefers an Olfa stainless-steel craft knife; any suitable sharp craft knife must be handled safely.
Orbital sander Removes varnish from the drawer fronts in the example Use appropriate dust protection and avoid cutting through veneer.

A tree stencil for furniture painting is the most direct category to search for if you are assembling supplies. A stencil brush, craft knife, vinyl or shelf paper, and an orbital sander are the other task-specific categories. Check the stencil’s physical dimensions against your drawer fronts before ordering; availability, scale, and compatibility vary by listing.

Prepare the furniture and decide how much finish to remove

1. Remove drawers and hardware

Take out every drawer and remove the knobs or pulls. Label hardware and drawer positions if they are not interchangeable. Working horizontally on detached fronts makes it easier to burnish a mask and keep a stencil brush perpendicular to the surface.

2. Paint the cabinet body

In the featured project, the dresser body is painted Fusion Mineral Paint Cast Iron. The body’s deep color acts as a visual frame around the lighter wood-toned drawer landscape. Follow the selected paint’s instructions for cleaning, coats, drying, and recoat timing; the example does not establish a universal preparation rule for every finish.

3. Choose between sanding and retaining varnish

The project author sands the drawer fronts back to bare wood. If you want to keep an existing varnish, test your chosen paint on a small, inconspicuous area first and let it dry before committing to all the fronts. That small test is especially important when the finish is glossy, waxed, contaminated, or unknown. The example’s sanding step is specific to its drawers, not proof that every piece must be taken to bare wood.

4. Clean dust before masking

After sanding, remove all dust from the fronts and surrounding work area. A mask cannot sit flat over grit, and loose dust can become texture in the painted ridge. Keep the fronts in their final visual order while planning so the mountain line will flow across the whole dresser.

Plan the composition before opening the paint

Set the drawers side by side on a protected surface and arrange the tree stencils by size. Decide where the prominent tree will go before you place the mountain mask. The focal tree should have enough uninterrupted space around it to read as a subject, while the smaller silhouettes can fill gaps toward the edges.

Mark the top and bottom limits of each horizon lightly or with removable tape. The second drawer from the bottom is the starting point in the featured method, but your starting drawer can change if the furniture has a different number of drawers or a visible rail. What matters is that the rear and foreground ridges occupy distinct vertical bands and that the transition feels continuous when the drawers are reinstalled.

Cut and paint the custom mountain horizons

1. Size the mask to a drawer

Cut sign-making vinyl (or shelf paper) to the dimensions needed for one drawer front. Place it across the upper part of the second drawer from the bottom, as in the source project. Keep the lower portion exposed; that is where the ridge color will be filled.

2. Draw an irregular mountain line

Use a fine-tip marker to draw a freehand mountain horizon on the mask. Vary the peaks and valleys instead of creating a geometric zigzag. The line can be loose because the trees will break up portions of it later. If you dislike the first attempt, redraw it before cutting.

3. Cut and burnish

Cut along the marker line with a craft knife. Remove the section that will receive paint, then press or burnish the remaining edge firmly against the drawer. Pay particular attention to corners and any wood grain that might create a channel for paint.

4. Paint the lighter rear ridge

Stencil Chestnut Mare along the cut edge and fill the area below it with the same color. Keep the brush controlled at the edge rather than pushing paint toward the mask. Let this layer dry according to the paint maker’s directions before moving the mask.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Offset the mask on the bottom drawer

Transfer the mask to the bottom drawer, shifting it sideways rather than aligning it exactly with the first horizon. The source method paints this lower horizon in Cast Iron, creating the darker foreground ridge. An offset prevents a straight seam from running through the dresser and gives the eye two separate planes.

For a dresser wider than the mask, work in sections and maintain a small reference mark at each join. Avoid changing the mask’s vertical height between sections. If the drawers are different widths, redraw or recut a mask rather than stretching vinyl until the peaks distort.

Build the tree layers from back to front

Rear trees: small and light

Place the smaller tree stencils along the lighter Chestnut Mare ridge. The silhouettes should sit on or just above the ridge line so they appear rooted in the distant landform. Vary spacing and rotation subtly; a perfectly even picket-fence row looks less natural than a group with quiet gaps.

Foreground focal tree: large and dark

Stencil one larger tree in the darker color where you reserved the focal position. Let it overlap the visual space between the two horizons if that suits your composition. Because it is the largest silhouette, check its relationship to drawer gaps before painting: a hardware hole or rail cutting through its trunk can weaken the focal point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foreground companions: taller silhouettes

Add taller trees along the darker lower ridge. Keep enough variation in height that the focal tree remains identifiable. If a stencil opening is large, load the brush lightly and build opacity with several controlled passes instead of flooding the cutout in one stroke.

Prevent bleed at the stencil edge

Use only the tips of the stencil brush and offload excess paint before touching the furniture. Royal Design Studio’s furniture-stenciling guidance emphasizes this light-loading approach. My Wonderful Walls’ Forest Friends tutorial gives the same practical warning in plain terms: “Otherwise it might bleed under the stencil.” Hold the brush nearly perpendicular and use a tapping or very small circular motion rather than sweeping paint under the edge.

Stencil choices: custom mask or continuous pattern?

The featured dresser combines separate tree stencils with a one-off vinyl horizon. Other stencil routes solve different layout problems.

Approach Best for What to check
Separate tree stencils plus a hand-cut vinyl horizon A customized scene that can span drawer fronts with your own mountain profile You must plan the horizon height, cut the mask, and manage offsets yourself.
Continuous mountain-and-pine stencil A repeatable motif when you want the hills and trees supplied as one pattern Compare the stencil’s scale with each drawer; a pattern designed for walls may overwhelm shallow fronts.
Freehand trees and hills Artists who want maximum variation and do not need repeatable silhouettes There is no registration aid, so consistency depends on your drawing and brush control.

Cutting Edge Stencils says its Pine Mountain stencil kit can be used on furniture. That is an alternate pattern source, not the stencil used for the featured dresser. Confirm the kit’s dimensions and visual scale before purchase. The company also says spray adhesive is not required, though it can help reduce seepage on slightly textured surfaces; follow the product’s own directions if you choose that route.

General stencil practices that improve the result

Overlap for a denser forest

Annie Sloan’s furniture technique page demonstrates overlapping stencils to create a pattern. On this project, overlap is most useful among background trees or at the outer edges. Keep the focal tree’s silhouette readable rather than burying it under repeated overlaps.

Use registration marks only when repeating a pattern

Registration marks help align repeats of an allover stencil, as described by Royal Design Studio. The custom mountain mask in this dresser project is intentionally offset, so do not use registration marks to force the two horizons into identical alignment. Use small reference marks only to keep a multi-section mask level across one unusually wide drawer.

Account for furniture placement

My Wonderful Walls’ Forest Friends mural tutorial advises marking where furniture will sit before drawing hills so the image remains visible above it. The same planning principle applies here: mark drawer gaps, rails, and hardware locations before committing to a focal tree or high mountain peak. A beautiful section hidden behind a rail is wasted visual emphasis.

Hardware and final assembly

Once the painted areas are dry, reinstall the drawers in their original positions and evaluate the panorama from normal viewing distance. The project author repaints or retains knobs in coordinating tones and mixes knob shapes when she does not have enough of one style. Matching every knob is optional; a deliberate mix can support the handmade character, while one contrasting knob can draw attention away from the landscape.

Use the paint manufacturer’s instructions for any additional protective finish, cure time, or cleaning limitations. The supplied project description does not establish a universal durability period, topcoat requirement, cost, or completion time, so those details should come from the products you actually select and the conditions in your room.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Paint creeps under the mask

  • Remove excess paint from the brush before it reaches the edge.
  • Burnish the vinyl or shelf-paper edge again, especially over grain.
  • Use a tapping motion and build color gradually.
  • On a textured surface, consider the stencil maker’s approved adhesive guidance, then test first.

The horizon looks like a straight stripe

  • Vary the hand-cut peaks and valleys.
  • Shift the lower mask sideways instead of matching the upper ridge.
  • Break the line with small rear trees before adding the tall foreground silhouettes.

The forest feels flat

  • Check that the rear ridge is visibly lighter than the foreground ridge.
  • Use smaller, shorter trees in the distance and reserve the largest tree for the darker layer.
  • Reconsider spacing; identical intervals and identical heights erase the sense of depth.

Paint will not adhere to a retained varnish

Stop before completing the fronts and inspect the small test area. If adhesion is poor, return to the paint maker’s preparation instructions; sanding back to a sound surface may be appropriate for your finish, as it was in the featured example. Do not assume that a claim made for one coating applies to another. For example, Krylon says its Fusion All-In-One paint is compatible with nearly any surface, including plastic and ready-to-assemble furniture, without sanding or priming. That manufacturer claim concerns Fusion All-In-One and should not be generalized to Fusion Mineral Paint or other products.

Adapt the layout to other furniture

The same layered logic can be scaled to TV trays, side tables, or a headboard, all of which the featured tutorial identifies as possible adaptations. On a small table, use one compact ridge and fewer trees rather than shrinking a full dresser panorama until the silhouettes become unreadable. On a headboard, treat the broad panel as one continuous canvas and place the focal tree where pillows or bedding will not hide it. For a TV tray, keep the mountain line low enough that the usable surface remains visually calm.

Regardless of the item, preserve the core sequence: prepare and test the surface, establish the lighter rear landform, offset and darken the foreground ridge, then add trees from small and distant to large and near. That order lets each layer cover minor irregularities in the previous one while maintaining a readable sense of depth.

What this project does—and does not—promise

The method is a practical way to obtain a forest motif without freehanding every branch. It does not guarantee identical results across different woods, varnishes, drawer proportions, paints, or room conditions. No named study or project statistic establishes a typical cost, completion time, durability period, or success rate for this technique. Treat the dresser tutorial as a documented example, test your own surface, and let the furniture’s dimensions determine the mask and stencil scale.
