Yes—paint can change a room dramatically without requiring a professional muralist. The safest way to get a good result is to treat the mural as a small decorating project: choose a pattern you can measure or draw confidently, prepare the wall until it is clean and sound, protect the room, then apply the paint exactly as its label directs.

This guide uses three manufacturer-described examples as planning models: a taped mountain range, a guided ombré arch, and a measured checkerboard. They are examples, not a universal recipe. Your wall texture, existing coating, room conditions, paint product and comfort with measuring will determine the best approach.

Choose a mural design that matches your skills

Start with the design, not the paint can. Decide where the mural will sit, how large it should be, which colors belong in it and how the shapes will be laid out. Sherwin-Williams’ mountain guidance specifically calls for planning the colors and placement of the peaks, while its checkerboard guidance says to determine the square dimensions and pattern before painting.

Compare a design by four practical criteria: how much measuring and taping it requires, how many colors you need, how exact the edges must be, and whether its scale suits the wall. The three examples below are useful because they represent different kinds of work.

Design example Layout method Precision and skill emphasis How to use the example
Taped mountain range Long pieces of painter’s tape form overlapping triangular peaks. Beginner-oriented; the key decisions are peak placement, overlap and color order. A practical first mural when you prefer straight lines and a forgiving, organic pattern.
Ombré arch A rigid physical guide helps draw the arches before painting. Described as intermediate; curved lines and a controlled color transition demand steadier marking and brushwork. An inspiration for a softer, architectural focal point rather than a repeated grid.
Checkerboard Measure the wall and calculate the square dimensions before laying out the pattern. Most dependent on accurate measuring and repeated, crisp edges. A choice for readers who enjoy planning a regular geometric pattern.

The mountain project is presented by its manufacturer as a beginner, one-day example; that is a description of that project, not a promise that every wall can be completed in one day. The arch is described as intermediate, and the checkerboard instructions emphasize calculation. Use those labels to choose a comfortable starting point rather than treating them as guarantees.

When to choose the mountain pattern

Choose taped mountains if you want bold shapes without drawing curves or calculating a full grid. Overlapping triangles can hide small variations better than a pattern that repeats at exact intervals. Sketch the range on paper first, decide which peaks sit in front, and assign a color to each layer before tape touches the wall.

When to choose an ombré arch

An arch suits a reading nook, headboard wall or other area where one large shape can act as the focal point. The cited tutorial uses a physical guide to draw the arches and includes painter’s tape among the tools. The guide is a starting method, not a requirement that every arch use the same dimensions or number of bands.

When to choose a checkerboard

A checkerboard rewards careful preparation. Measure the usable wall area, decide how many columns and rows you want, then work out a square size that fits the layout. Make those decisions before painting; changing the spacing after the first color is down is difficult and visible.

Inspect and prepare the wall before opening paint

A mural needs a stable surface. Sherwin-Williams’ general preparation guidance describes the target as clean, solid and dry, with no cracks or other imperfections. Preparation changes with the wall material and the coating already on it, so do not assume that a method suitable for one substrate belongs on every wall.

Repair defects and remove failing paint

  1. Look across the wall in strong light and mark holes, cracks, peeling areas, glossy patches and places where the old coating is loose.
  2. Remove loose paint rather than painting over it. Address holes and cracks with the appropriate patching material, then allow repairs to dry.
  3. Sand or smooth repaired areas only as appropriate for the substrate and existing coating. If the wall has old, unknown paint, do not casually sand it: scraping and sanding can create hazardous dust or fumes. Follow local health guidance and suitable precautions for older buildings.

Clean, rinse when required and dry completely

Remove dirt and grime using a cleaning method suitable for the wall. Where the cleaning directions call for rinsing, rinse; residue left behind can interfere with the new coating. Give the wall time to dry fully before priming or painting. A surface that feels merely “mostly dry” is not a reliable basis for a mural.

Decide whether primer is needed

Prime when the wall condition, substrate or paint instructions call for it. Spot-priming repaired areas can help create an even base, but the correct product and coverage depend on what is already on the wall. Read the primer and paint labels together rather than selecting a universal primer by habit.

Sherwin-Williams’ professional preparation guidance states, “Approximately 90% of painting failures result from insufficient preparation.” That is the manufacturer’s claim; the guidance does not identify an underlying study, method or publication date, so it should not be read as an independently verified statistic. The practical lesson is still clear: time spent repairing and cleaning is part of the mural, not an optional prelude.

Protect floors, furniture and adjoining surfaces

Move what you can out of the room. Cover the floor and anything that must remain nearby with a drop cloth, and secure the covering so it cannot shift while you work. Sherwin-Williams identifies canvas drop cloths as reusable and absorbent. Plastic and paper coverings can slide, so they may need additional securing.

Material Why you may need it Selection note
Interior wall paint Creates the mural colors and any base coat. Use a product intended for the wall and room, and follow its label for application, coats and drying.
Painter’s tape Forms mountain peaks, masks geometric areas and can help establish an arch layout. Choose tape suitable for the relevant surface; tape is a masking aid, not a guarantee of a perfect edge.
Brushes Handle edges, corners, narrow bands and touch-ups. Match the brush to the paint and the detail required by your design.
Roller Applies a broad base coat or large, open mural sections. Roller nap depends on surface texture; do not treat one nap size as a mural-wide rule.
Rigid guide Helps draw the curved bands in an ombré arch. The guide’s size and shape should suit the wall and the arch you planned.
Measuring and marking tools Establishes checkerboard squares, centerlines and mountain placement. Use tools that let you repeat measurements consistently across the wall.
Drop cloth Protects flooring and nearby furnishings. Canvas is reusable and absorbent; plastic or paper may slide and require securing.
Wall-preparation supplies Cleaning, patching, smoothing and priming. A sponge, putty knife, patching compound and primer are conditional supplies, not automatic requirements.

Use a repeatable layout-and-paint sequence

The following order combines the common logic in the mountain, arch and checkerboard tutorials while leaving product-specific decisions to your paint label.

  1. Choose the design and colors. Decide the mural’s boundaries, dominant color, supporting colors and the order in which sections will be painted. Check the colors together in the room’s actual light.
  2. Measure and mark. Establish the center, edges and major reference points. For mountains, mark peak locations and overlaps. For an arch, mark the centerline and the points that will receive the guide. For a checkerboard, calculate the square size from the wall measurements before drawing the grid.
  3. Prepare the surface. Repair defects, remove loose paint, clean and rinse when required, let the wall dry and prime when the substrate or product instructions require it.
  4. Protect the room. Place and secure the drop cloth, move furnishings and mask trim or fixtures that should remain unpainted.
  5. Apply the layout aid. Press painter’s tape firmly where the mountain or geometric edges require masking, or use the rigid guide to draw the arch. Keep marks light enough to remove or cover.
  6. Paint in planned sections. Work from the background or largest areas toward smaller details when that makes the overlaps easier to control. Keep each color in its planned section and avoid loading a brush so heavily that paint runs under the tape.
  7. Remove masking and correct edges carefully. Follow the tape and paint instructions for when tape should come off; do not assume one timing works for every product. Touch up small misses only after the relevant area is ready for another coat.
  8. Apply additional coats and allow drying as labeled. Recoat intervals, cure times and ventilation requirements vary by product and conditions. The paint label—not a generic mural timetable—controls when you can recoat, move furniture or clean the wall.

Painting the taped mountain range

Lay out the mountain range on paper first. A simple plan can show a low foreground range, taller peaks behind it and the order of colors. On the wall, use long pieces of painter’s tape to form the triangular peaks, checking that the overlaps read clearly from the room’s main viewpoint.

Keep the pattern manageable

  • Limit the number of peaks if this is your first mural; fewer, larger shapes are easier to tape and fill.
  • Vary peak height and spacing instead of trying to make every triangle identical.
  • Paint one planned layer at a time so the overlap order remains obvious.
  • Use a brush where a taped point is narrow and a roller only where the open area is large enough to control.

The tutorial’s “one-day” description belongs to that manufacturer-designed project. Wall repairs, multiple coats, drying conditions and your chosen scale can make your project take longer.

Painting an ombré arch with a guide

An ombré arch combines a curved outline with a progression of related colors. The physical guide helps keep the arches consistent, but it does not remove the need to check the guide against your wall and plan the spacing before painting.

Build the arch from the center outward

  1. Mark the intended centerline and the overall width and height of the arch.
  2. Position the rigid guide and trace the first curve, then reposition it for each additional band according to your plan.
  3. Label the bands or keep a small color map nearby so the sequence stays consistent.
  4. Paint the broadest, easiest-to-control areas first, then refine the inner curves with a brush.

The cited example is described as intermediate because curves and transitions demand more control than a simple taped triangle. If a freehand curve feels uncertain, spend more time refining the guide marks rather than trying to correct a wobbly painted edge later.

Measuring and painting a checkerboard

A checkerboard is less forgiving of spacing errors because every square is compared with the next one. Begin by measuring the wall area that will actually receive the pattern, excluding trim or openings. Decide the number of rows and columns, calculate a square dimension that fits, and mark the layout before applying color.

Keep repeated measurements consistent

  • Use the same reference edge for each row and column instead of measuring from a succession of possibly uneven marks.
  • Check the grid from several steps back; a small error is easier to correct before paint than after the pattern is filled.
  • Mask only the areas required for the current color and keep the sequence organized so adjacent squares do not receive the wrong paint.
  • Expect edge quality to depend on wall texture, tape adhesion, paint condition and technique. No cited source guarantees perfectly sharp lines.

If the calculated squares would be too small for comfortable brushwork, revise the number of rows or columns before painting. The checkerboard tutorial’s central instruction is planning the dimensions first, not following one fixed square size.

Drying, recoating and cleanup: let the label decide

Paint products differ in application instructions, number of coats, recoat windows, drying and curing. Room temperature, humidity, airflow, wall porosity and film thickness also affect the result. Because the cited material does not establish one interval for every mural, use the label for the specific paint in your hands and account for the actual conditions in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the mural undisturbed for the period the label specifies before replacing furniture or cleaning it. Clean tools according to the product instructions, close containers securely and dispose of used materials in line with local rules.

Common problems and practical fixes

Paint bleeds beneath tape

Uneven texture, loose tape edges, excess paint and an unsuitable tape choice can all contribute. For the next section, confirm that the surface is sound and clean, press the tape down carefully and use a controlled amount of paint. Repair a small bleed only after the area is ready for the appropriate touch-up coat.

The pattern feels too crowded

Step back and assess the mural from the doorway and the room’s main seating position. If the issue is visible before painting, adjust peak placement, arch width or checkerboard count on the marks rather than forcing the original plan.

Colors look different on the wall

Color relationships change with surrounding finishes and room light. Test the planned colors in a discreet area or on a sample surface that represents the wall, then make final decisions before committing to the full design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wall still shows cracks or patches

Stop adding decorative coats. Return to preparation: address the defect, smooth it as appropriate, clean away residue, let it dry and prime when required. Painting over an unstable surface only hides the problem temporarily.

A simple decision checklist

  • Prefer straight lines and a forgiving layout? Start with the taped mountain example.
  • Want a single curved focal shape? Use the guided arch approach and plan the bands before painting.
  • Enjoy measuring and repeated geometry? Choose a checkerboard and calculate its squares first.
  • Is the wall dirty, damaged or peeling? Delay the mural until cleaning and repairs are complete.
  • Are you unsure about old paint? Avoid casual sanding or scraping and follow appropriate local lead-safety guidance.
  • Are you unsure when to recoat? Use the selected paint’s current label rather than a generic drying claim.
