To paint offset stripes on a hardwood floor, prepare the wood for its existing finish, divide the room into 30-inch sections, paint alternating sections, complete the skipped sections after the first color dries, touch up, and protect the design with a compatible floor polyurethane. That sequence produced the documented guest-bedroom makeover, but the primer, paint and clear-coat combination was chosen for that particular unsealed, stained floor—not tested as a universal system.
The finished project is documented by Addicted 2 Decorating’s August 27, 2020 project post (updated February 14, 2025), while the layout and preparation details appear in its Part 1 tutorial. Use the current labels for every coating you buy, especially if your floor already has varnish, urethane or a factory finish.

What an offset-striped floor involves
An offset stripe pattern uses parallel bands that run with the floorboards. In this project, the installer established a reference at the accent wall, marked in the direction of the boards, and laid out alternating 30-inch-wide sections. Every other section was painted first; the untouched sections were completed afterward so the light stripes stayed aligned. The result is a large-scale, regular pattern rather than narrow pinstripes.
Plan the layout before opening a paint can. A room that is not an exact multiple of 30 inches will leave a partial section at one or both walls. Decide where that narrower band should fall—usually at the least conspicuous wall—and keep the reference line square to the room so the pattern does not slowly drift.

Check the floor before choosing a coating system
Preparation is determined by what is already on the boards. Sherwin-Williams’ guidance separates bare wood from varnished or urethane-coated floors and says a finished floor must be sanded before primer or sealer. Its general standard is that “The floor surface needs to be clean, dry, dust-free and as smooth as possible.” Read the complete guidance at Painting Hardwood Floors for One-of-a-Kind Designs.
| Starting surface | What to do before paint | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Bare or unsealed wood | Clean, smooth and prime or seal as appropriate. | Use primer when you need adhesion, stain blocking or a uniform base. A clear sealer is the option when retaining visible grain matters. |
| Varnish- or urethane-finished wood | Sand the existing coating before applying primer or sealer, then remove all dust. | Confirm that the paint and floor finish are rated for this substrate; do not assume a product made for bare wood will bond to a glossy film. |
| Factory-finished flooring | Follow both manufacturers’ written preparation instructions. | Rust-Oleum’s Varathane support page warns that some factory-finished floors may be incompatible. Stop and verify compatibility if the label does not expressly cover your floor. |
Primer can hide some grain, whereas a clear sealer allows more of the wood’s character to remain visible, according to Sherwin-Williams. That appearance choice is separate from adhesion: a beautiful grain does not compensate for a coating that cannot bond.

- Measuring tape, pencil, straightedge and a scrap piece of 1-by-5 lumber for repeatable marks.
- Painter’s tape wide enough to protect the stripe edges.
- Vacuum and cleaning supplies that leave no residue.
- Sandpaper appropriate to the existing finish. The documented project hand-sanded its primer with 150-grit paper.
- Stain-blocking wood primer if stains require isolation.
- Interior floor-compatible paint for the base and contrasting stripes. The project used Benjamin Moore Ben interior paint for its base and Behr Premium Plus satin in Polar Bear for the stripe color; those are historical project choices, not independent recommendations for every floor.
- Water-based polyurethane floor finish, applied with a floor-rated brush or applicator. The project used a five-inch stain-and-waterproofing brush on an extension pole.
- Clean rags, a dust mask and ventilation equipment appropriate to the products’ labels.
Prepare and prime the boards
1. Repair and clean
Remove furniture, sweep and vacuum the entire room, and deal with loose boards, protruding fasteners and damaged edges before coating. Wash only with a method allowed by the existing finish and let the wood dry completely. Dust trapped under tape or polyurethane becomes a permanent ridge.

2. Sand a previously finished floor
If the boards have varnish or urethane, abrade that surface as directed by the coating manufacturer rather than painting directly over gloss. Sand evenly enough to remove sheen without creating dips, then vacuum and wipe according to the product label. A small test area is useful: the primer should wet the surface evenly instead of separating into beads.
3. Block stains when needed
The documented room was unsealed and had stains, including oil from a spilled bag of dog food. The author applied oil-based Zinsser Cover-Stain, allowed it to dry overnight, hand-sanded the primer with 150-grit paper, and vacuumed before painting. That sequence addresses the conditions in that room; it is not a rule that every hardwood floor requires an oil primer. Choose a stain blocker only when its label supports the substrate and the subsequent paint.
4. Apply the base color
After dust removal, apply the base paint in thin, even coats and allow it to dry according to its label. In the project, two coats of Benjamin Moore Ben interior paint formed the base. Do not tape over paint that is merely surface-dry if the label requires a longer recoat or cure period; premature tape can lift the base or leave a soft edge.

Lay out the 30-inch offset stripes
1. Establish a reference line
The installer began at a marked point on the accent wall and followed the floorboard direction for the initial mark. Recreate that approach by selecting the wall that will frame the pattern most visibly, then use a straightedge to project a clean line across the boards.
2. Transfer repeatable widths
Measure 30 inches from the reference and mark the next boundary. The project used a scrap 1-by-5 as a physical guide along with a straightedge, which helps keep repeated marks consistent. Check several points down the room before snapping or extending lines; a small error at one wall can become obvious at the opposite wall.
3. Tape the first set of sections
Apply painter’s tape on the boundaries of every other 30-inch section. Press the tape edge firmly, especially over board seams and small texture changes. Label the sections you intend to paint first so you do not accidentally fill an adjacent band.

Paint the alternating sections
- Paint every taped, first-pass section with the stripe color, keeping the brush or roller strokes in the board direction where practical.
- Maintain a wet edge and avoid flooding the tape line. Heavy paint can seep beneath tape or create a raised ridge.
- Inspect each section for holidays, lap marks and contamination while the paint is workable.
- Remove tape according to the paint label—often while the coat is still slightly soft, unless that product directs otherwise—and let the painted sections dry fully.
- Retape the boundaries needed to protect the completed bands, then paint the skipped sections. Working in this alternating order keeps the white stripes lined up across the room, as described in the project account.
The stripe paint named in the account was Behr Premium Plus satin in Polar Bear. Color, sheen and current formula can change, so treat that name as a record of the project rather than proof that it is suitable for your floor.
Touch up before clear coating
Once both sets of sections are dry, inspect the floor from standing height and from the doorway. Correct thin spots, small bleeds and tape pull-outs with a fine brush. Keep touchups confined to their own color and feather the edges so the polyurethane does not magnify a hard patch. The author waited a couple of hours after stripe touchups had dried before applying the clear coat; your paint label may require a longer interval.

The project’s three-coat schedule
The completed-floor post names Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane Floor Finish in matte. The author brushed it with a five-inch stain-and-waterproofing brush attached to an extension pole, applied two coats on the first day with five or six hours between them, and applied a third coat the next morning. The author observed that the product labeled matte still had a slight sheen, closer to eggshell in their opinion. That is a personal appearance observation, not an instrumental gloss measurement.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
- Confirm that the paint maker permits the chosen water-based polyurethane over its cured paint. Rust-Oleum’s Varathane support guidance says to follow the paint manufacturer’s directions on painted wood and notes that some factory-finished floors may not be compatible.
- Verify the floor is clean, dry and within the label’s temperature and humidity range.
- Apply a thin, continuous coat, maintaining a wet edge and avoiding puddles at board joints or along tape lines.
- Allow the stated recoat time. The five-to-six-hour interval reported above belongs to this project and does not replace the current can directions.
- Lightly abrade between coats only if the finish label calls for it, then remove every trace of dust before recoating.
- Keep foot traffic, rugs and furniture off the floor for the full cure period on the label, which can be substantially longer than the recoat interval.
How the project schedule differs from general guidance
Sherwin-Williams’ general article recommends two polyurethane coats over dried paint for protection and says a third coat may be applied after six months in high-traffic areas once the initial coats have cured. That recommendation is separate from the project’s three-coat schedule; neither is a measured durability result for this particular floor. Use the current instructions for the exact finish you select.
Common failure points and fixes
Paint lifts with the tape
The base may not have cured, the tape may be too aggressive, or the substrate may still be glossy. Stop pulling, trim the lifted edge cleanly, let the area cure, and repair with compatible paint. For the next section, test tape on a hidden area and follow the paint’s cure guidance.
Stains bleed through
Oil or tannin can migrate through ordinary paint. Sand only the affected spot, remove dust, and apply a compatible stain-blocking primer before repainting. Do not bury a wet stain under polyurethane.
Stripe edges look wavy
Unequal measurements, a bowed straightedge or tape that was not pressed into board texture can all distort an edge. Recheck the 30-inch marks at multiple points, use a rigid guide, and burnish the tape edge before the next application.
Polyurethane looks cloudy or uneven
Dust, over-application, incompatible layers or recoating outside the label window are likely causes. Stop adding coats, allow the film to cure, and consult the finish manufacturer’s technical support for sanding and recoating instructions. Do not assume another product will solve a compatibility problem.
When a professional is the safer choice
A decorative-floor painter or wood-floor refinisher is worth considering when the floor has an unknown factory finish, widespread damage, moisture issues, complicated borders or a layout that cannot be squared from a reliable reference. Ask for a written preparation and coating system that names the existing finish, the primer, the paint, the clear coat and the cure times. The sources document one guest-bedroom project, not a controlled comparison of products or a lifespan guarantee.
