You can paint an old record player’s cabinet, but the right preparation depends on whether it is veneered wood, painted wood, metal or plastic. First decide whether you want a painted makeover or to preserve the original wood finish. This guide covers the cabinet only—not the turntable, electronics or playing mechanism.

Decide whether to paint or preserve the cabinet
Inspect the cabinet before choosing a finish. Look for veneer edges, bubbles, missing veneer, loose joints, previous paint, labels and decorative details. If the veneer and finish are in sound condition and you value the original wood appearance, cleaning or repairing them may suit the project better than covering them with paint.

Veneer is a thin decorative layer over a base material. If it is loose or missing, repair or stabilize it before painting; paint will not fix a failing surface. Specialist phonograph restoration guidance discusses veneer repair and cautions against wire brushing, which can remove stain and damage veneer (The Victor-Victrola Page restoration guidance).
Gather supplies for the surface you have
Choose primer and paint for the cabinet’s actual material and existing coating. The record-player furniture projects use furniture primer, enamel, sandpaper, brushes, mini rollers and masking tape as examples—not a required brand or universal system (Sherwin-Williams’ furniture upcycling project; Resene’s retro storage cabinet project).

- Cleaning materials suitable for the existing finish.
- Surface-compatible primer and paint, selected according to their labels.
- Sandpaper and application tools appropriate to the surface and product.
- Masking tape and protective covering for parts that cannot be removed.
Do not assume one grit, solvent, primer or paint is right for every cabinet. Krylon’s preparation guidance treats wood, metal and plastic as different surfaces; it advises removing loose paint or rust and recommends priming metal to help protect against rust (Krylon surface-preparation guidance). Follow the chosen product’s current instructions for cleaning, priming, application, drying and recoating, and test an inconspicuous area first.

Remove the player and protect what stays
- Unplug the unit. Do not begin while it is connected to power.
- Remove the record player from the cabinet if practical. Resene’s project directs readers to remove the player before painting the cabinet.
- Take off removable hardware and components. For a full cabinet restoration, specialist guidance recommends disassembling as far as practical, including removing items such as lids, doors, hardware and mechanisms where appropriate (The Victor-Victrola Page restoration guide).
- Use model-specific instructions for anything fixed or wired. Cabinet construction varies, so there is no safe universal removal sequence. Consult the model’s service documentation or seek qualified help if removing a component involves wiring or a fixed mechanism.
- Mask or shield anything that cannot be removed. Keep coatings out of openings, controls, the interior and speaker fabric.
Prepare the cabinet without damaging it
Clean the cabinet and assess its existing coating before sanding, abrading or stripping. Remove loose paint or rust where the surface and product instructions permit. If the cabinet is veneered, work especially gently: aggressive sanding can cut through the decorative layer. Specialist phonograph restoration guidance warns that a wire brush may remove stain and damage veneer (The Victor-Victrola Page restoration guidance).

If the surface is peeling, bubbling or otherwise unsound, address that condition before painting. Do not treat missing or loose veneer as a stable paint surface. For metal, use preparation and primer suited to metal; for plastic or existing paint, verify compatibility with the product label. A small test in an inconspicuous spot can reveal an adhesion or appearance problem before you coat the visible cabinet.
Prime and paint according to the product label
Apply the selected primer and paint as their manufacturers direct. Furniture primer and enamel are used in the Sherwin-Williams console-upcycling example, but that does not establish compatibility with every cabinet material or existing finish. Keep the mechanism and cabinet interior protected, and work in a ventilated area as required by the product labeling.

Use the label for coat count, drying intervals, recoat windows and curing time; there is no universal schedule for all paint systems. Allow the coating to reach the specified cure before reinstalling components or returning the cabinet to use.
Avoid consumer methylene chloride paint removers
Do not use a consumer paint or coating remover containing methylene chloride. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says consumers should not use products containing it and describes acute exposure as capable of causing dizziness, unconsciousness and death. EPA information is available in its final risk evaluation for methylene chloride.

If a coating must be stripped, choose an alternative only after checking that it is suitable for the cabinet’s material and existing finish. Follow its current label and local disposal instructions; no single substitute is appropriate for every cabinet.
