You can paint concrete, but a durable result depends on preparing the surface and choosing a coating labeled for that concrete and its exposure. Before starting, identify whether the surface is a floor, exterior slab, or wall, and whether it is bare, previously painted, sealed, hardened, or contaminated. Follow the selected coating’s current instructions for substrate, moisture, preparation, and application.
Can you paint concrete?
Yes. Concrete can be painted, but the result depends on preparation, moisture conditions, and compatibility between the surface and coating. Remove dirt, oil, grease, efflorescence, and loose or incompatible coatings; address defects with compatible repair materials. The concrete must meet the coating’s stated moisture and cure requirements.
Choose a product labeled for the particular concrete surface and its intended exposure. A floor, exterior slab, and wall may call for different coating types. A vehicle-used garage floor also has different demands from a foot-traffic area, so check that the product is rated for the actual traffic and conditions.

Choose the coating based on how the concrete is used
Identify the surface, exposure, and existing finish before choosing a coating. No one coating type is suitable for every concrete surface or moisture condition.
| Surface or condition | What to look for | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Interior concrete floor | A coating labeled for concrete floors and the expected traffic | Moisture limits, compatibility with existing coatings or sealers, preparation, and primer requirements |
| Exterior slab, porch, or walkway | A coating labeled for exterior concrete and the expected exposure | Weather and application conditions, water exposure, and slip characteristics |
| Concrete wall | A coating labeled for concrete or masonry walls | Substrate preparation, moisture conditions, and compatibility with existing finishes |
| Garage or workshop floor | A floor-coating system labeled for the expected traffic and use | Required surface profile, moisture limits, chemical and abrasion exposure, and application steps |
Concrete coating categories differ in intended use. Choose by the product label and current technical data sheet, not by a general claim that one type is best. Check compatibility with any existing paint, sealer, curing compound, or hardener, as well as the required primer and application conditions.
Before painting: inspect and test the concrete
1. Check cure and moisture requirements
Do not assume that a single cure period or moisture test applies to every coating. Check the current label or technical data sheet for requirements for new concrete, repairs, and moisture. If the slab does not meet those requirements, wait or address the moisture condition before coating.
2. Repair defects
Painting will not correct structural or surface problems. Address cracks, holes, spalling, loose concrete, and other unsound areas with repair materials compatible with the chosen coating. Correct drainage or ponding problems where needed. Allow repairs to cure as directed by their manufacturer and the coating system.
3. Identify existing finishes and contamination
Determine whether the concrete is bare, painted, sealed, hardened, or treated with a curing compound. Remove contaminants and any coating that is deteriorated or incompatible. Where an old coating appears sound, check that it is compatible with the new system and prepare it as the coating manufacturer directs.
A water-drop check can help identify a surface that repels water, but it does not establish coating compatibility or prove that the slab meets moisture requirements. Follow the coating manufacturer’s inspection and preparation instructions.
4. Check previously painted concrete
Inspect existing paint for lifting, cracking, bubbling, or other deterioration. Remove deteriorated or incompatible coatings. Do not assume a coating is a suitable base just because it looks intact; follow the new coating’s instructions for testing and preparing old paint.

Prepare the concrete for paint
Preparation depends on the concrete’s condition and the selected coating. The aim is to provide a clean, sound surface prepared by the method the coating system requires.
- Remove loose debris. Sweep and remove dust, including from cracks and surface recesses.
- Remove contaminants. Clean dirt, oil, grease, and other contamination using a method compatible with the concrete and coating. Remove efflorescence and any curing compounds or other residues that could interfere with bonding.
- Rinse or remove residue as directed. Follow the cleaner and coating instructions, then allow the surface to meet the coating’s dryness requirements.
- Remove failing coatings. Remove deteriorated or incompatible paint, sealer, or other finish using a suitable method.
- Repair defects. Use compatible repair materials and allow them to cure as directed.
- Prepare the surface texture if required. Use the method specified for the coating and substrate. Do not assume every surface needs etching, grinding, or sanding.
- Remove preparation residue. Clean away dust and residue using the method required by the coating system.
- Confirm readiness. Proceed only when the surface meets the product’s requirements for cleanliness, soundness, moisture, and cure.
Preparation requirements vary. A cleaner or etcher does not necessarily replace other required steps. Read the product instructions to determine whether cleaning, mechanical preparation, chemical etching, or another method is appropriate.
Profile smooth concrete when the product requires it
Some coatings require a particular surface texture for bonding. The appropriate preparation depends on the coating and the concrete. Follow the product’s current label or technical data sheet rather than applying a universal profile requirement.
Acid etching is not a universal step. A project specification may call for a particular etching method, but other coatings or substrates may require a different preparation method. If etching is specified, follow the product and safety instructions, including directions for rinsing and drying.
Mechanical preparation can create dust. Use appropriate dust controls and protective equipment for the method and material. If an old coating may contain lead, assess the hazard before disturbing it.

Lead-paint safety for older painted surfaces
Before disturbing old paint, check the applicable lead-safety requirements for the building and location. In the United States, paint in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities may require particular precautions. Disturbing lead-based paint can create hazardous dust.
- Keep children and pets out of the work area.
- Contain dust and debris rather than spreading them through the building.
- Use suitable dust-control and cleanup methods.
- Do not dry-sand or grind suspected lead paint without appropriate controls.
- For substantial paint disturbance, consider a contractor qualified for lead-safe work.
U.S. paid contractors who disturb paint in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities may be subject to the EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule. Check current federal and local requirements before work begins.

Should concrete be primed?
Primer is required for some coating systems and not for others. Use only a primer that the coating manufacturer specifies or approves for the substrate and topcoat. Do not substitute an unrelated wall primer, sealer, or leftover masonry product.
Check the product instructions for whether primer is required, which surfaces it is suitable for, and how it affects preparation and application. Follow the stated drying and recoat conditions before applying the topcoat.

Step 6: Apply additional coats if specified
Follow the product’s directions for coat count and recoat conditions. Do not assume that a surface that feels dry is ready for another coat.
Step 7: Protect the coating while it dries and cures
Keep the surface protected from contamination and traffic for the period specified by the manufacturer. Dry-to-touch, recoat, and return-to-use conditions are not interchangeable; follow the product’s current instructions.
Temperature and weather requirements
Application conditions vary by coating. Check the current instructions for allowed air and surface conditions, humidity, dew point, and protection from rain or condensation. The concrete itself must meet the product’s requirements; suitable air conditions alone do not establish that the slab is ready.
Make painted concrete safer when wet
Painted concrete may be slippery when wet. For steps, ramps, exterior walkways, and other wet areas, check the coating’s slip characteristics and whether the manufacturer permits a compatible anti-slip additive or textured finish. Follow the product’s directions for any additive.
Why painted concrete fails
| Problem | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Peeling or poor adhesion | Contamination, deteriorated old coating, incompatible finish, or unsuitable preparation | Identify the cause, remove failing or incompatible material, and prepare the surface as the selected system requires. |
| Blisters or other moisture-related failure | The concrete did not meet the coating’s moisture requirements | Check the product’s moisture limits and address the condition before recoating. |
| Uneven or poor coverage | Surface condition, application, or material use did not match product directions | Check the label’s coverage guidance and application instructions for the actual surface. |
| Slippery when wet | The finish may not provide suitable traction for the location | Check whether the coating allows a compatible anti-slip additive or textured finish. |
| Premature wear | The coating may not be suited to the surface’s traffic or exposure | Choose a system labeled for the actual use and follow its preparation and application requirements. |
