To paint snow, mix food coloring into water, put it in a spray or squeeze bottle, and use the colored water to make pictures and patterns on clean snow. A dropper, brush, or sponge gives children more control for small details. You can also decorate a snow sculpture or paint snow spread on a tray indoors.
What do you need to paint snow?
- Clean snow outdoors, or snow on a tray indoors
- Water
- Food coloring; liquid watercolor is another option
- A spray bottle, squeeze bottle, dropper or pipette, paintbrush, or sponge
- Winter clothing that can get wet, plus a surface that can tolerate colored splashes
You can use a different container for each color, or rinse one tool between colors. There is no need to buy a special kit: a clean household bottle or other small container can work. Boston Children’s Museum notes that food coloring and liquid watercolor can stain, so choose clothing and surfaces accordingly (Boston Children’s Museum: Painting Snow).

How to make snow paint
- Fill a container with water. Use a spray bottle, squeeze bottle, or small container suited to the tool you plan to use.
- Add food coloring. Mix in several drops, then add more if you want a stronger color. Prepare separate colors in separate containers if that is convenient.
- Choose a clean patch of snow. Pick a spot away from sensitive areas such as waterways, as the Bureau of Land Management advises in its Snow Painting activity sheet.
- Make a design. Spray, squeeze, drip, brush, or dab the colored water onto the snow. Start with simple marks and add details or colors as you like.
The National Park Service describes the same basic approach using water, food coloring, and tools such as a spray bottle or dropper (NPS: Nature Creations—Discovering Snow).
Choose a tool and a way to paint
Match the tool to the mark
- Spray bottle: covers a broader patch and works well for soft, scattered patterns.
- Squeeze bottle: directs a stream of colored water for lines and larger shapes.
- Dropper or pipette: places smaller drops for dots and details.
- Brush or sponge: dabs color onto the snow for more controlled marks.
These tools are alternatives, not requirements. Boston Children’s Museum lists brushes, spray or squeeze bottles, a water dropper, and optional sponges among its suggestions.

Choose the canvas
Paint directly on outdoor snow, decorate a snow sculpture, or bring snow inside on a tray. If there is no snow to work with, the museum suggests painting ice as another option. For an indoor setup, use a tray and a surface that can handle melting snow and colored water.
Easy snow-painting ideas
- Make free-form lines, dots, or repeating patterns.
- Try mixing colors where two painted areas meet.
- Write letters or draw simple shapes.
- Plan a larger picture across a wide patch of snow.
- Add color to a snow sculpture.
Let children experiment with the marks and colors rather than aiming for a particular result. Boston Children’s Museum also describes snow painting as open-ended exploration.

Keep the activity comfortable and tidy
Colored water can splash, and food coloring or liquid watercolor may stain. Dress children in layers, insulated boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat; change wet clothes promptly and take regular indoor warming breaks. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org says outdoor play should generally be avoided below a wind chill of -15°F. This is general winter-play guidance, not a snow-painting-specific threshold (HealthyChildren.org: Playing Outside in Winter).
