Painted stripes can give a bathroom a tailored focal wall without tile demolition or complicated construction. The reliable sequence is straightforward: prepare the surface, choose a direction and width, plan the repeat, apply a bathroom-suitable base coat, mask alternating bands, and remove the tape carefully while the stripe paint is still workable.

The phrase “35 colors” refers to the design concept in the original title, not to a palette that can be verified here. The documented color names below are examples from a Sherwin-Williams bathroom guide, not a confirmed 35-color set. If you are recreating a specific graphic, obtain its original color list before ordering paint.

Decide whether stripes fit your bathroom

Stripes are most useful when you want a strong change in character from paint alone. They can frame a vanity wall, emphasize a shower-free feature wall, or make a small powder room feel intentionally designed. The result depends less on a complicated pattern than on disciplined preparation and a layout that suits the room.

Horizontal stripes

Sherwin-Williams says that “Horizontal stripes make a room appear more spacious.” Treat that as a visual-design guideline rather than a guaranteed change in room dimensions. Horizontal bands can also draw attention around the room, so they work well when you want the walls to feel wider and the ceiling height is already comfortable.

Vertical stripes

The same Sherwin-Williams guidance states, “Vertical stripes make the ceiling appear higher.” Again, this is an optical effect, not a structural one. Vertical bands can be useful in a bathroom with a low-looking ceiling or a tall, narrow wall where you want to reinforce the room’s upward lines.

Tone-on-tone stripes

For a quieter treatment, use one color in two sheens instead of two strongly contrasting colors. The change in reflection becomes visible as light moves across the wall, while the overall color remains restrained. This approach is especially practical when fixtures, tile, or patterned flooring already supply visual activity.

Choose width, contrast, and a repeat before buying paint

Stripe width

Sherwin-Williams suggests bands between 4 and 12 inches wide. That range is manufacturer guidance, not a universal standard. Narrower bands create a busier rhythm; wider bands read as architectural blocks. Measure the actual wall and test a short taped sample at eye level before committing.

Contrast level

  • Low contrast: choose neighboring values of the same hue or the same color in different sheens. Edges are less dominant and imperfections are less conspicuous.
  • Medium contrast: pair a calm base with a clearly different but related stripe color. The pattern is visible without becoming the room’s only feature.
  • High contrast: combine distinctly lighter and darker bands for a graphic statement. Every tape edge and surface flaw will be easier to see, so preparation matters more.

Color examples you can use as starting points

Sherwin-Williams’ bathroom color guidance includes Windchill, Silverpointe, On the Rocks, Fresh Eucalyptus, Gray Clouds, Double Latte, and Perfect Periwinkle. These are examples for developing your own base-and-stripe relationship; they are not evidence of a verified 35-color palette. View the current manufacturer information at Sherwin-Williams’ bathroom paint colors guide, then confirm that the names, formulas, and availability match your region.

Start by assigning one color to the wall’s base coat and one or more colors to the masked bands. If you use several stripe colors, keep the repeat simple enough to measure and tape consistently. A repeating sequence such as base–stripe A–base–stripe B is easier to execute than an irregular sequence that changes at every band.

Use paint and tape suited to a humid room

Read the current product label for surface compatibility, sheen, curing, and bathroom use. Sherwin-Williams describes its Duration interior acrylic latex as providing stain, moisture, and mildew resistance for bathroom spaces. Benjamin Moore describes Aura Bath & Spa as formulated for heat and humidity, with durability, color retention, and mildew resistance. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results; they should not be treated as a ranking of the two products.

Low-stick painter’s tape is appropriate for stripe edges. Sherwin-Williams lists Scotch-Blue painter’s tape in its stripe project supplies, while Benjamin Moore recommends low-stick tape and describes a clear-caulk technique for limiting bleed. Use the tape and paint makers’ current instructions if they differ from the sequence below.

Basic supply list

  • Interior paint suitable for bathroom conditions, in the base and stripe colors
  • Rollers and frames, plus a mini roller for tight areas
  • A quality brush for corners and cut-in work
  • Low-stick painter’s tape
  • Tape measure, pencil, level or straightedge
  • Clean cloth or sponge, mild dishwashing liquid, patching compound, sanding material, and a dust-removal cloth
  • Optional clear caulk for Benjamin Moore’s tape-edge method

Prepare the wall before measuring

Do not lay out stripes over soap film, loose paint, or unfilled holes. The tape follows the surface you give it; every ridge or dusty patch can create a visible break in the edge.

  1. Wash the wall. Wipe it with a damp cloth or sponge and mild dishwashing liquid to remove dirt and bathroom residue.
  2. Rinse away soap. Use clean water so detergent does not remain under the paint or tape.
  3. Patch defects. Fill holes, dents, and failed fastener marks with an appropriate patching compound. Allow the patch to dry as directed.
  4. Scuff-sand where needed. Sand glossy areas or raised patch edges enough to create an even surface, then remove all sanding dust.
  5. Check the wall under strong light. A side-light inspection reveals ridges that may disappear in ordinary room lighting but stand out once contrasting stripes are applied.

If the existing wall color can serve as one of the stripe colors and the surface is sound, it may function as the base. Otherwise, apply a fresh base coat and let it dry according to that paint’s instructions. Sherwin-Williams’ described process calls for at least four hours or overnight before taping; the label for your chosen product takes precedence.

Calculate and mark the layout

Use an odd number when you want matching end colors

Sherwin-Williams recommends dividing the wall by an odd number when equal stripe widths are desired so the pattern begins and ends with the same color. For example, if a wall is 60 inches wide and you choose five equal bands, each band is 12 inches wide. The arithmetic is simple: measure the usable dimension, choose the number of equal bands, and divide the dimension by that number.

Decide whether the first and last bands should be the base color or the stripe color before you draw. Account for trim, corners, outlets, and fixtures. A pattern that is mathematically equal across the whole wall may look off-center if a large mirror or cabinet hides one side, so check the visible area as well as the full measurement.

Mark with a level or straightedge

  1. Measure from a fixed reference, such as the ceiling line for vertical stripes or a side wall for horizontal stripes.
  2. Place small pencil marks at each boundary rather than trying to draw a continuous line immediately.
  3. Connect the marks with a level or straightedge. Check the tool in several positions; a single crooked reference can transfer the error across the entire wall.
  4. Extend marks lightly through corners only where the pattern must continue. Avoid heavy pencil lines that could show through a light stripe.

At corners, decide whether the stripe wraps onto the adjacent wall or stops at the corner. Wrapping creates continuity but requires careful alignment; stopping at a corner is simpler and can be preferable when adjoining walls have different features.

Paint the stripes step by step

1. Apply and cure the base coat

Roll the base color evenly, brush the corners, and allow the coat to dry for the period stated on the label. Do not assume that a surface feels dry enough for tape just because it is no longer tacky; insufficient curing can pull up the base coat or leave a soft edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Tape alternating bands

Mark which bands will receive the stripe color, then tape every other band on the outside of each boundary line. Press the tape edge firmly with a clean finger or a suitable tool, especially where the wall has mild texture. Keep the tape continuous whenever possible and press overlaps flat.

Benjamin Moore suggests running a thin bead of clear caulk along a tape edge to limit paint bleed. If you use that technique, keep the bead very thin and follow the caulk and paint labels. It is a manufacturer tip, not a guarantee that bleed will be eliminated.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

3. Seal vulnerable edges if necessary

Before applying a strongly contrasting stripe, inspect the tape for gaps. On a textured or uneven wall, a small amount of the base color brushed along the tape edge can seal the boundary; allow it to dry as directed before adding the stripe color. Test this approach in an inconspicuous area first because excess paint can build a ridge.

4. Paint the exposed bands

Use a brush to cut in where a roller cannot reach, then roll the open bands with even pressure. Avoid loading the roller so heavily that paint pools against the tape. Work one wall or a manageable section at a time and maintain a wet edge to reduce lap marks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Remove tape at the right moment

Sherwin-Williams recommends removing tape while the paint is tacky. Benjamin Moore advises pulling tape slowly at a 45-degree angle. Start at a corner, fold the tape back on itself, and pull steadily rather than snapping it away from the wall. If the selected paint or tape label specifies a different removal window, follow that instruction.

6. Let the stripes cure before judging them

Colors and sheen can shift as paint dries. Leave the wall undisturbed for the product’s stated cure period, then inspect the lines in daylight and in the room’s artificial lighting. Keep a small amount of each color, clearly labeled, for later touch-ups.

Match the design choice to the room

Design choice Documented guidance When it is useful
Horizontal direction Sherwin-Williams says it can make a room appear more spacious. Use when you want a wider visual emphasis around the room.
Vertical direction Sherwin-Williams says it can make the ceiling appear higher. Use when you want to emphasize height on a low-looking or narrow wall.
4–12 inch bands Sherwin-Williams’ suggested stripe-width range. Choose the narrower end for a busier rhythm and the wider end for broader graphic blocks.
Tone-on-tone Sherwin-Williams describes using the same color in different sheens. Use when you want pattern without a strong hue contrast.

The visual descriptions in this table are design guidance, not measured changes to room dimensions. Sample the exact colors and sheens on the actual wall because bathroom lighting, tile reflections, and fixture finishes alter perceived contrast.

Troubleshoot common stripe problems

Paint bleeds under the tape

Bleed usually follows a gap, a dusty surface, heavy paint, or wall texture. Press the tape edge again, use less paint at the boundary, and consider the thin clear-caulk method described by Benjamin Moore. For a small defect after drying, use a fine brush and the original base color to sharpen the line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tape pulls up the base coat

The base may not have cured long enough, the tape may have too much adhesion, or the wall may have a weak existing coating. Stop pulling, remove the remaining tape slowly, and let the area dry. Patch or sand any lifted section, prime if the product system requires it, and repaint before retaping with a lower-stick tape.

Lines look uneven

Check whether the wall itself is out of square before blaming the tape. Re-measure from the same reference, use a level or straightedge for every segment, and avoid correcting a drifting line by eye halfway across the wall. A consistent reference produces a more convincing pattern than a series of local adjustments.

Stripe colors look harsher than expected

High contrast becomes more pronounced beside white fixtures and glossy tile. Test a smaller contrast, switch to tone-on-tone sheens, or widen the bands so the pattern has fewer visual interruptions. Do not rely on a phone screen to predict the final result; view a painted sample under the bathroom’s actual lights.

How to handle the “35 colors” promise

The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a definitive 35-color list for this design. The seven documented examples—Windchill, Silverpointe, On the Rocks, Fresh Eucalyptus, Gray Clouds, Double Latte, and Perfect Periwinkle—can help you explore cool, neutral, and muted color directions, but they should not be presented as the complete set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have an original 35-color image or project board, record each color name, finish, and paint line before purchasing. Confirm that every color is still made, mixable in your region, and suitable for the bathroom surface. Paint a labeled test card for each proposed base-and-stripe combination, because two colors that look related in a digital image can have very different undertones on a real wall.

Final checks before you commit

  • The wall is clean, rinsed, patched, smooth, and dust-free.
  • The direction, band width, repeat, and end colors are measured on the actual wall.
  • The base coat has cured for the time required by its label.
  • The paint is identified for the room’s moisture conditions, and the tape is low-stick and compatible with the surface.
  • You have tested the color relationship and sheen in the bathroom’s daylight and artificial light.
  • You know whether the pattern wraps corners and how it terminates behind fixtures.

With those decisions settled, painted stripes become a controlled sequence rather than a guessing exercise: prepare first, measure from a reliable reference, mask alternating bands, apply manageable coats, and remove the tape slowly. That process gives the design its best chance of producing crisp, intentional bathroom walls.
