Yes, you can paint some upholstered furniture, but the result depends on the fabric, its condition and color, how firmly it is upholstered, and the coating you choose. Small, tightly upholstered pieces made from absorbent natural fabric are the most defensible starting point. Test an inconspicuous area first, apply thinly, and accept that paint can alter the fabric’s hand. No method in this guide guarantees the original softness, a uniform finish, or a fixed service life.

Start by deciding whether the piece is a sensible candidate

Painting is a surface-refresh technique, not a substitute for structural repair or reupholstery. Before choosing paint, inspect the furniture as an object and the fabric as a substrate.

Check the frame, padding and history

The current This Old House guide advises checking for structural problems, wear, stains and damage before beginning. A sound frame matters because paint cannot correct movement, failing joints or collapsed padding. Upholstery expert Amanda Brown, quoted by This Old House, notes that “High-quality pieces are often masked beneath a layer of ratty, torn fabric. Carved wood, down cushions, and coil springs are good signs that you’ve found a gem in the rough. Be leery of a wobbly frame (repairs can get costly), and steer clear of pieces that were stored outdoors—they could have mold or termite damage.”

Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
  • ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Treat outdoor storage, suspected mold, termite damage and a wobbly frame as reasons to stop and repair or replace the upholstery rather than coating it. Paint can hide a defect while making later inspection and repair more difficult.

Identify the fabric and its condition

Annie Sloan describes small, firmly upholstered items such as dining-chair seats made from natural fabrics including cotton or linen as better candidates for a diluted chalk-paint wash. That is a suitability example, not a universal rule. A fabric’s fiber content, weave, existing finish, age, stains and degree of wear all affect absorption and appearance.

Fabricoat’s instructions require an absorbent fabric and say the fabric should be lighter than the chosen paint when you want a color change. A dense, coated, very dark or nonabsorbent surface may not take a water-based fabric coating evenly. Read the upholstery care label and the selected product’s substrate instructions before proceeding.

Set a realistic goal

Painting can refresh a serviceable piece or change its color, but it is not a promise of factory-new upholstery. Existing texture, seams, nap, stains and uneven absorption may remain visible. A dramatic light-over-dark change is especially dependent on the product, the fabric and the number of thin applications the fabric can accept without becoming stiff.

Choose a method that matches the substrate

Fabric paint, acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium, a diluted chalk-paint wash and vinyl spray are different systems. They should not be treated as interchangeable. Use the method whose manufacturer explicitly covers your material and intended use.

Method Best-supported use Application form Main texture or use limitation
Purpose-made fabric or upholstery paint A fabric product whose directions cover the upholstery you intend to paint Follow the product’s stated brush, sponge or other application method Directions differ by product; test first and follow its coat, drying and cleaning instructions
Acrylic paint with fabric medium Textiles where a flexible bond is needed Brush or other technique specified by the product instructions Liquitex warns that applying thick paint to large areas tends to stiffen fabric
Diluted chalk-paint wash Small, firmly upholstered natural-fabric items such as cotton or linen seats A thin wash applied in controlled sections Results vary with fabric condition, composition, color and firmness; thicker application may stiffen the fabric
Vinyl spray coating Vinyl and fabric upholstery only where the spray’s label specifically covers the substrate Spray application under the product’s ventilation and environmental directions Requires product-specific cleaning, ventilation, temperature, humidity and substrate conditions

Purpose-made fabric or upholstery paint

This is the most straightforward route when the label explicitly includes upholstery. Tulip’s Fabric & Upholstery Paint instructions, for example, tell users to test an inconspicuous area, allow the paint to dry fully before use and wait 72 hours before spot cleaning. Those are Tulip-specific directions, not a universal cure time for every upholstery paint.

Acrylic paint plus fabric medium

Liquitex recommends fabric medium to create a more flexible bond on textiles. The medium does not remove the need for a hidden-area test or make heavy application harmless. Thick paint spread over a large area tends to stiffen fabric, so plan for thin, controlled layers rather than trying to achieve full opacity in one pass.

Diluted chalk-paint wash

Annie Sloan’s guidance is aimed at small, firmly upholstered natural-fabric pieces. The wash approach can be useful when you want the weave to remain part of the visual result. Fabric condition, fiber composition, color and firmness still control the outcome, and a heavier coat can change the fabric’s composition and make it stiffer.

Vinyl spray

Rust-Oleum’s Specialty Vinyl Spray description includes vinyl and fabric upholstery among its uses. That does not make it a general-purpose fabric paint. Read the exact label for cleaning, ventilation, temperature, humidity and substrate requirements, and use it only when those conditions match your project.

Gather the right workspace and tools

Work where you can leave the piece undisturbed while it dries. Keep the area well ventilated, especially for a spray coating, and follow the selected product’s temperature, humidity and ventilation requirements. Protect nearby surfaces from overspray, drips and dust.

  • Vacuum and an upholstery cleaner appropriate for the fabric’s care requirements.
  • The selected fabric paint, acrylic paint and fabric medium, chalk paint, or substrate-approved spray.
  • Application tools named in the product directions, such as brushes, sponges or spray equipment.
  • Clean water or other cleaning material only where the product instructions call for it.
  • Drop cloths, masking material for adjacent wood or hardware, and gloves suitable for the product.
  • A small hidden test area that uses the same fabric, seam, underside or rear edge as the visible upholstery.

Do not improvise a thinner, sealer or topcoat unless the coating maker says it is compatible. An extra layer can change flexibility, sheen and cleanability.

Prepare the upholstery before painting

  1. Document the starting condition. Photograph stains, wear, nap direction and seams so you can distinguish a coating problem from a pre-existing defect.
  2. Repair structural problems first. Stabilize a loose frame or address damaged padding before cleaning and coating.
  3. Vacuum thoroughly. Remove loose dust, hair and grit from the surface, seams and crevices.
  4. Clean according to the fabric’s care needs. This Old House recommends cleaning before painting; Fabricoat specifies vacuuming and cleaning with a suitable upholstery cleaner. Do not saturate a fabric that cannot safely tolerate the moisture.
  5. Allow the fabric to reach the condition required by the product. Fabricoat’s method calls for dampening the fabric for its application. Other products may require a dry surface, so the label for your chosen coating controls.
  6. Mask adjacent materials. Cover wood, metal, zippers, flooring and hardware where the product directions do not call for coating them.

Cleaning is not a guarantee that stains will disappear. A coating may leave discoloration visible, and aggressive scrubbing can damage fibers before you ever apply paint.

Run a hidden-area test before committing

A test is the most important beginner’s safeguard. Choose an area that represents the visible fabric but is normally concealed. Apply the complete proposed system there: the same cleaning, dampening or drying condition, number of coats, tool and finishing step.

  1. Check that the product’s instructions cover your fabric or substrate.
  2. Prepare the test area as you will prepare the rest of the piece.
  3. Apply a thin coat without flooding the weave or saturating padding.
  4. Let it dry for the period specified by the product. If no period is given, wait until the test is fully dry before judging it rather than relying on a surface that merely feels less wet.
  5. Inspect color, coverage, streaking, adhesion, texture, flexibility and transfer to a clean cloth.
  6. Flex or compress the test area as the furniture will be used, then inspect for cracking, flaking or an objectionable change in hand.

Fabricoat specifically says the fabric must be absorbent and lighter than the chosen paint for a color change. A failed test is useful information: change the method, accept the existing color, choose a different piece or stop the project.

3M’s Scotchgard protector instructions also call for a colorfastness test and say not to use that protector on X-coded fabric. That is protector guidance, not permission to paint X-coded upholstery; it illustrates why a care code cannot be ignored or converted into a painting recommendation.

Apply the coating in thin, controlled layers

Work section by section so you can keep the application even and monitor how much liquid the fabric is absorbing. The goal is to coat the fibers without leaving a heavy film that changes the seat’s flexibility.

For fabric or upholstery paint

  1. Stir or otherwise prepare the product exactly as directed.
  2. Start with a small section and use the tool specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Spread a thin, even layer, working into the weave without flooding seams, welts or cushion edges.
  4. Keep a wet edge only as far as you can manage without repeatedly reworking partially dried paint.
  5. Let the first coat dry according to the label before deciding whether another is needed.
  6. Build coverage with additional thin coats rather than one thick coat.

Tulip’s instruction to allow full drying before use and to wait 72 hours before spot cleaning applies to that product. Follow your own product’s directions if they differ.

For acrylic and fabric medium

Combine the acrylic and fabric medium in the proportions specified by the medium’s maker. Keep the mixture workable, but do not compensate for poor coverage by laying it on heavily. Liquitex’s warning is direct: “Applying thick paint to large areas will tend to stiffen fabric.” Use thin passes and test how the fabric bends between coats.

For a diluted chalk-paint wash

Use the dilution and preparation described by the chalk-paint maker. Annie Sloan’s guidance is most applicable to small, firmly upholstered natural-fabric items. Work in manageable sections, keep the wash thin and allow each layer to dry before deciding whether more color is required. A wash that leaves some weave visible can be preferable to a thick coat that seals the surface and makes it rigid.

For vinyl spray

Follow the spray label for agitation, distance, passes, ventilation, temperature, humidity and recoat timing. Keep the can moving and avoid concentrating spray on seams, folds or one spot. If the label’s substrate or environmental conditions do not match your furniture, do not proceed on the assumption that another fabric-paint method’s instructions apply.

Manage drying, curing and first use

“Dry” can mean the surface no longer feels wet; it does not necessarily mean the coating is ready for normal abrasion or cleaning. Use the selected product’s stated drying, curing and first-use instructions.

A This Old House project quote from painting contractor Mauro Henrique says, “First coat’s down, we’re gonna wait about four hours for this to dry. Come back. We put the second and final coat on and it’s gonna look just amazing.” That is a project-specific remark, not a universal four-hour schedule or performance guarantee.

Keep cushions, seats and moving parts out of service until the product says they can be used. Do not stack or compress freshly coated pieces, and do not spot-clean early. Tulip’s 72-hour wait before spot cleaning is one example of a product-specific interval.

Will painted upholstery become stiff?

It can. Liquitex says thick paint over large areas tends to stiffen fabric, and Annie Sloan warns that thicker application can change the fabric’s composition and make it stiffer. Stiffness is more likely when a painter tries to hide the original color in one heavy coat or allows paint to pool in the weave.

Reduce the risk by selecting a method intended for the substrate, testing first, applying thin layers and allowing each layer to dry before adding more. Judge the actual test area rather than assuming a product will preserve the original hand. A finish that looks acceptable on a flat swatch may feel unpleasant on a cushion once it is compressed.

Troubleshoot common results

Uneven color or visible brush marks

Uneven absorption, stains, nap direction and overlapping partially dried sections can all show through. Stop and let the area dry before deciding whether another thin coat will improve it. Do not keep brushing a tacky surface; that usually moves material around rather than leveling it.

The original color still shows

Confirm that the fabric is lighter than the chosen paint when using a method with that requirement, as Fabricoat specifies. More coverage may require another thin coat, but the hidden test should determine whether additional material produces acceptable flexibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fabric feels hard or board-like

Heavy application is the first issue to investigate. Compare the painted area with the unpainted fabric and stop adding product. If the test is unacceptable, the safest correction may be removing the coating or choosing reupholstery rather than adding a different topcoat.

Paint is rubbing off or transferring

Check whether the product has reached its stated dry or cure condition and whether the fabric was properly prepared. Repeat the manufacturer’s test on a hidden area before attempting a repair. Do not infer that a protector or sealer intended for another system will fix the problem.

The spray finish looks rough or oversprayed

Review the spray’s required distance, movement, ventilation and environmental conditions. A coating applied outside its specified temperature or humidity range may not behave as expected. Remove overspray from surrounding surfaces only with a method safe for those surfaces and the product involved.

Cleaning and maintenance after the project

Use only the cleaning method permitted by the coating and the underlying fabric. Tulip allows spot cleaning after 72 hours; that interval belongs to Tulip’s product instructions. Other coatings may specify different timing or restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Vacuum gently and regularly enough to prevent grit from working into the weave.
  • Blot an accidental spill rather than aggressively scrubbing a painted surface.
  • Test any cleaner in a concealed location after the coating has reached its stated cure.
  • Watch high-contact areas for changes in color, texture, transfer or cracking.
  • Keep records of the product and application method so future touch-ups use the same system.

The available maker instructions and practical guides do not establish a universal service life for painted upholstery. They are application and care guidance, not independent comparative testing across fabrics, products and use levels. Treat durability as piece-specific and inspect the furniture rather than relying on a promised number of years.

A beginner’s decision checklist

  • Structure: Is the frame stable, padding usable and the piece free from suspected mold or termite damage?
  • Fabric: Is the material identified, cleanable and absorbent enough for the selected product?
  • Color: Is the existing fabric lighter than the paint when the product requires that condition?
  • Firmness: Is the upholstery firmly held, as recommended for the small natural-fabric pieces described by Annie Sloan?
  • Method: Does the manufacturer explicitly cover this substrate and use?
  • Test: Have you completed a full hidden-area test and allowed it to dry before judging?
  • Texture: Is the changed hand acceptable when the test area is flexed or compressed?
  • Aftercare: Do you know the product’s drying, curing and cleaning limits?

If any answer is no, pause rather than compensating with extra paint. A different coating, a different piece or professional reupholstery may be the more reliable decision.

What success looks like

A successful beginner project is not necessarily a perfectly uniform, factory-soft surface. It is a stable piece whose test area matches the intended appearance and feel, whose coating was applied within the maker’s instructions, and whose owner understands the cleaning and use limits. Start with a small, firmly upholstered natural-fabric item when possible, work thinly, and let the test—not optimism—decide whether the whole piece should be painted.
