An even wall finish depends less on speed than on a clean, sound surface and a steady sequence: prepare the wall, choose a roller cover that suits its texture, cut in with a brush, then roll into that paint while the edge is still wet. Use the paint and primer labels for compatibility, drying, and recoating directions.
Gather tools and protect the room
Set out the essentials before opening the paint so you can work without leaving an edge to dry while you search for a tool.
- Drop cloths to protect floors and furniture
- Painter’s tape, where masking is appropriate
- Mild soap, lukewarm water, and a sponge for cleaning
- Wall repair materials and a putty knife for holes or cracks
- An angled brush, roller frame, roller covers suited to the wall, and a paint tray
- Primer if the wall condition or coating system calls for it
A branded kit is not necessary; choose tools and materials that suit the surface and the paint label.

Check the wall before disturbing old paint
For homes built before 1978 in the United States
Older US homes are more likely to contain lead-based paint. Disturbing it can create hazardous dust and chips, so do not casually sand or scrape an unknown old coating. Before renovation, repair, or painting work that may disturb it, review the EPA’s current lead-safe work guidance and its information for consumers and contractors. The EPA states: “If you decide to hire a contractor to work on your pre-1978 home, the RRP Rule requires them to be lead-safe certified.” Rule coverage and exceptions are specific; consult the EPA guidance for your situation. An ordinary dust mask should not be treated as making lead work safe.
For other walls
Look for loose paint, grime, dust, cobwebs, stains, holes, and cracks. A clean, sound, dry wall gives the coating a better surface to cover; painting over debris or defects leaves them in the finish.

Prepare the wall and room
- Protect the space. Move or cover furniture and lay drop cloths over the floor.
- Clean the wall. Wash away grime, dust, cobwebs, and stains with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse with a damp sponge, then let the wall dry.
- Repair defects. Remove loose paint and repair holes or cracks. Let repairs dry as directed by the repair material before continuing.
- Mask where needed. Apply longer, continuous runs of painter’s tape where practical and press the edge down firmly.

Decide whether the wall needs primer
Primer is not an automatic requirement for every previously painted wall. It can be important on repaired or bare areas, stains, and other challenging surfaces. Consider the wall’s condition and the paint system, then follow the primer and paint labels for compatibility and drying and recoat times.

Sherwin-Williams recommends tinted primer when changing to a darker color in its preparation guidance. Treat that as the manufacturer’s advice for its guidance, not a universal requirement for every product or color change.
Match the roller cover to the wall texture

- Cut in with an angled brush. Paint a narrow band at ceiling edges, trim, baseboards, and corners.
- Work in manageable sections. On a large wall, divide the work so you can reach the brushed band before it dries.
- Roll into the wet band. Load the roller evenly and overlap passes, blending the roller area into the still-wet brushwork.
- Use overlapping passes. Sherwin-Williams describes working in an N-pattern, starting in a dry area and working back toward wet paint. Keep a wet edge as you progress so adjacent areas blend rather than meet after drying.

Let the paint dry according to its label
Drying and recoat times depend on the particular coating and conditions. Follow the current product label rather than assuming a universal wait time or number of coats. Apply another coat only as the product directions specify.
