Start by choosing which version of the series you want to portray: Kafka Hibino in his Defense Force combat suit, Kafka transformed as Kaiju No. 8, or another named character. Those are different costume projects, not variations on one pattern. Use official character art to guide the silhouette and details, then choose a bought, altered, or handmade approach that fits your time, skills, and event.
Choose a character and version
Decide on the specific character and appearance before buying materials. The official Kaiju No. 8 anime site identifies Kafka Hibino / Kaiju No. 8 and the principal cast; the Japanese official site links character images for Kafka, Reno, Kikoru, Mina, Hoshina, Narumi, Kaiju No. 8, and others. These are the best starting points for identifying the costume you intend to make.
- Kafka in his Defense Force combat suit: Plan around the suit as well as its mask and weapons. A licensed Kafka figure also depicts this look, making it a possible three-dimensional reference.
- Kafka as Kaiju No. 8: Treat this as a distinct creature design. The official anime site credits Mahiro Maeda for kaiju design, while Tetsuya Nishio is credited as character designer and chief animation director.
- Another character: Collect references for that character and the exact version you want. Do not assume Kafka’s clothing, armor, or construction plan will transfer.
Compare the official images from more than one angle when available. Note the main shapes, colors, seams, armor edges, headwear, and accessories before settling on materials. A licensed figure can help show volume, but it is a collectible rather than a required cosplay tool: Kotobukiya’s ARTFX J Kafka is a 1/8-scale, 200 mm figure made of PVC and ABS, and Bandai Tamashii Nations lists an S.H.Figuarts Kafka with interchangeable hands and expressions, a handgun, and an empty holster. Neither is a full-size costume pattern.

Choose a build route
There is no single best way to make the costume. Choose each component separately: clothing, armor or headwear, accessories, and makeup can follow different routes.

Mixing routes is practical: for example, you might source clothing, alter it for the silhouette, and make a headpiece separately. Decide based on visual accuracy, comfortable movement, time, skill, and budget rather than expecting one method to excel at everything.
Break the design into manageable parts
Clothing
Start with the largest shapes and fit. Compare the garment’s overall cut, layers, and visible seams with your chosen reference. A convincing silhouette usually depends more on getting those broad relationships right than on adding tiny surface details to a poorly fitting base.

Armor and headwear
For a handmade foam component, Dremel’s general cosplay helmet guide demonstrates a broad workflow: trace and cut a pattern in EVA foam, heat-shape the pieces, smooth edges with a rotary tool, and heat-seal before priming. Use this as general fabrication guidance, not as a Kaiju No. 8 mask pattern. It supplies no series-specific dimensions, tested visibility design, or complete materials list.
Before committing to detail work, check that separate pieces join cleanly and that the headpiece sits securely without obstructing movement. Build the shape from your own selected references; do not treat a small collectible’s dimensions as wearable proportions.

Accessories and finish
List the accessories visible in your chosen version, then decide whether each can be bought, adapted, or made. Keep finish work until after a test fit: paint and small details cannot fix a piece that shifts, binds, or is the wrong scale for the rest of the costume.
Make and test a wearable prototype
- Record the reference. Save official images of the exact character and version. Mark the features that define it: silhouette, color blocks, headwear, armor, and accessories.
- Measure and plan components. Separate the outfit into clothing, armor/headwear, accessories, and makeup. Note how each will be attached and where it must flex or remain stable.
- Test the fit early. Assemble or temporarily position the major pieces before final finishing. Sit, walk, turn, raise your arms, and check whether components collide or pull loose.
- Check headpiece function. If wearing a full headpiece, test visibility, ventilation, hearing, and comfort. These are practical wearer checks, not official Kaiju No. 8 specifications or a tested safety design.
- Finish after adjustments. Once the costume moves and sits as intended, smooth, seal, prime, paint, and add small details appropriate to the materials.
Try the complete outfit for a realistic period before an event rather than judging comfort from a brief fitting. The finished costume may feel different once all layers and accessories are worn together.

Check your convention’s current rules
Prop and costume policies vary by event, so read the rules for the convention you will attend instead of relying on a general cosplay checklist. As one event-specific example, Comic-Con International’s 2026 cosplay guide says costume props must be inspected daily at Costume Props Desks and that final approval is at the discretion of Prop Safety Officers. That policy is not a universal convention rule.

Check the event’s current guidance for props and headwear before finishing or transporting your build. If a prop needs inspection or approval, leave time for the event’s stated process.

Optional physical references
If you already want a collectible, the official product pages can provide views of Kafka’s combat-suit appearance and accessories. Kotobukiya notes its ARTFX J figure’s specifications and pricing are for Japan and may differ by country, and availability can vary by inventory. Tamashii Nations lists an S.H.Figuarts Kafka release date of August 30, 2025, in Japan, with an approximate 160 mm size and PVC/ABS materials; its page links Amazon for Japan and the United States and warns that some items may be discontinued. Check regional listings and stock before purchasing. These figures are optional references, not necessary tools for making a costume.
