A successful planked board-and-batten accent wall starts with a measured drawing, not a saw. Decide whether your design uses horizontal or vertical planks, battens over the existing wall, or a panel-backed surface; map every outlet, switch, door and window; then buy boards, fasteners and finish materials for that exact layout. The guides from The Home Depot, Lowe’s and RONA describe related methods, but the dimensions, board sizes, orientation and products for the titled Part 1 project have not been independently established, so treat those details as decisions you make for your wall.
This first part takes the project from an empty wall to a sound, marked layout and explains the installation choices that determine how much cutting, filling and painting you will do later.

Choose the wall construction before buying materials
“Board and batten” describes a pattern, not one universal assembly. A batten is the narrow strip that covers a joint or creates a raised grid. The broad “plank” area may be the existing drywall, a new panel board, or individual shiplap-style boards. Pick the construction that matches the wall condition and the look you want.
| Approach | What is installed | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battens over the existing wall | Upper and lower trim plus vertical battens fastened directly to the painted wall | A sound, reasonably flat wall where you want the grid to sit proud of the surface | Existing texture or waves remain visible between battens; each batten must land flat |
| Panel-backed board and batten | A smooth panel board, such as optional 1/8-inch plywood cited in The Home Depot method, covered with horizontal and vertical trim | Walls with texture you want to hide or a design that needs a uniformly smooth background | Adds panel seams, handling and more cutting; the panel is an optional method, not a requirement for this project |
| Planks or manufacturer shiplap with batten trim | Horizontal or vertical planks installed according to the product instructions, with battens used as visual dividers | A clearly planked appearance and a product system whose edges and fastening details are known | Board thickness, reveal, movement and fastening vary by product; follow that manufacturer’s instructions |
These approaches are alternatives, not steps to combine automatically. Dakota’s shiplap and board-and-batten instructions are product-specific, while The Home Depot and Lowe’s explain general indoor methods. None establishes a universally best construction or a tested comparison.

Measure the wall and draw the layout
Measure the finished wall height and width in several places. Record the smallest usable dimensions if the wall, ceiling or floor is out of square. Photograph or sketch each outlet, switch, thermostat, vent, door casing and window casing with its distance from the nearest corner. Lowe’s specifically recommends noting outlet and switch locations during measurement; doing this before ordering boards prevents a batten from colliding with an electrical box.
Decide plank direction and visual boundaries
Choose horizontal planks when you want the wall to read wider, or vertical planks when you want a taller, more linear effect. Decide whether the planking stops at a top rail, runs into a corner, or terminates at existing casing. The exact Part 1 orientation has not been verified, so do not assume a photograph or a generic tutorial supplies your dimensions.
Set a repeatable spacing system
Choose the batten width and the clear space between battens together. To estimate the number of equal bays, subtract the widths of the planned side battens from the wall width, then divide the remaining width by your intended bay width. If the result produces an awkward sliver at one side, adjust the bay width or center the pattern before cutting. Make the same calculation vertically if you are creating a grid with horizontal rails.
Do not copy a spacing number from a general guide as a universal rule. The Home Depot instructions include an example spacing for its own method; your wall, trim width and openings may require a different repeat. Draw the first and last batten, all rails, and every opening on graph paper or a scaled digital sketch.
Check level, plumb and casing conflicts
Use a long level to establish a reference line for the top and bottom trim. Floors and ceilings can be out of level, so measure from the reference line rather than assuming the floor is straight. Mark stud locations with a stud finder and transfer them to the wall in pencil. Keep marks where trim will cover them, and use painter’s tape for temporary labels near visible areas.

Materials and tools for a typical indoor build
Your list depends on the construction you selected and the dimensions you measured. Paintable, pre-primed MDF boards or mouldings are a supported option for trim. Unfinished battens are another option, but they require full priming before paint.
Material checklist
- Pre-primed MDF boards or mouldings for rails and battens, or unfinished battens if you will prime them.
- Trim board for the top, bottom and any intermediate horizontal rails.
- Optional 1/8-inch panel board, such as plywood, when you deliberately choose a panel-backed method.
- Construction adhesive suitable for interior use and the wall surface.
- Finishing nails or brad nails sized for the trim thickness and substrate; use a nail gun or brad nailer rated for them.
- Lightweight spackle or wood filler for nail holes and small defects.
- Paintable latex caulk for inside corners, board-to-wall gaps and changes in plane.
- Interior primer when boards are not pre-primed, and interior paint or stain compatible with the surface.
- Painter’s tape and a drop cloth.
- Sandpaper in a suitable fine-to-medium grit range for filler and primer preparation.
- About 10 percent extra moulding for cuts and measuring errors, following RONA’s May 20, 2024 planning recommendation. This is a general allowance, not a verified quantity for the titled wall.
Tool checklist
- Tape measure, pencil, straightedge and a long level.
- Stud finder.
- Miter saw for trim angles; a circular saw may be useful for panel boards or long rip cuts.
- Brad nailer or finish nail gun, with a hammer for hand adjustments.
- Utility knife, pry bar and sander.
- Eye protection, hearing protection and a suitable respirator when cutting or sanding MDF.
No reliable price, product model or regional availability is established for this project. Buy by category and verify board lengths, primer status and interior-use ratings at your retailer.
Prepare the existing wall
Remove pictures, shelves and loose hardware. Protect the floor and nearby furniture with a drop cloth. If the wall is glossy, dirty, damp or peeling, clean and repair it before covering it. A batten system does not correct active moisture, loose drywall or major bowing; resolve those conditions first.
Decide how the new work meets the existing baseboard. The Home Depot sequence describes removing or adapting the baseboard before installing the lower trim. Lowe’s installs upper and lower trim as part of its batten-over-wall method. Either can work, but the choice changes the bottom cut and the finished height. Mark the intended top of the baseboard or lower rail before you cut anything.
If you selected a panel-backed design, cut panels to the measured wall area, dry-fit them, and plan seams where trim will cover them. Do not treat the 1/8-inch panel-board reference from The Home Depot guide as a mandatory component. Fasten panels according to their instructions and leave the clearances required by the panel manufacturer.

Install the trim and planks in a controlled sequence
1. Transfer the layout to the wall
Mark the top and bottom reference lines, side boundaries, stud centers and opening edges. Use a level to draw every rail and a plumb line for the first and last vertical batten. Recheck the bay widths at the actual wall, because a corner that is out of square can change the final cut.
2. Dry-fit long pieces
Lay the rails and planks on the floor in installation order. Label each piece and mark its finished face. Hold pieces against the wall without adhesive to verify that outlets, switches, casing and corners remain accessible. This is the last inexpensive point to change spacing.
3. Fit the upper and lower trim
Cut the upper and lower rails to your measured boundaries. Apply a compatible construction adhesive in manageable beads, then fasten into studs where possible. Use a level as you work; do not force a bowed board into alignment and assume filler will hide it. If the trim meets a corner or casing, make a clean joint appropriate to that location rather than burying a large gap in caulk.
4. Add side battens and planks
Install the side battens first if they define the pattern. For a planked design, follow the chosen product’s orientation and joint instructions, keeping end joints staggered when the product calls for it. For a battens-over-wall design, position each batten on the marked centerline, apply adhesive, and nail into studs or suitable backing. Use enough fasteners to hold the board flat without overdriving the heads.

5. Install the remaining battens and rails
Work from one boundary toward the other, checking each bay with the same spacer or measuring stick. A spacer makes repeated gaps more consistent than measuring every opening from a different reference. Around an outlet or switch, maintain the required clearance for the cover plate and never bury the electrical box behind trim. If a box needs to be extended because the finished surface moves forward, use an approved electrical-box extension and follow local code or ask a qualified electrician.

6. Inspect before the adhesive cures
Walk the wall from several angles. Look for a drifting top line, tapered bays, proud nail heads, loose ends and joints that will be visible from normal room viewpoints. Correct alignment while adhesive is workable and before you begin filling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fill, caulk, sand and paint
Allow adhesive and filler to cure according to their labels. Set or remove proud nail heads, then fill nail holes and small defects with lightweight spackle or wood filler appropriate to the material. Sand only after the filler is dry, using a light touch so you do not dish the surrounding MDF or drywall.
Caulk paintable joints where boards meet the wall, at inside corners, and at small changes in plane. Do not use caulk to disguise a structural gap, a miscut that leaves an open void, or movement caused by an unsecured board. Tool the bead smooth, remove excess, and allow it to cure before priming.
Pre-primed MDF still needs a careful inspection after installation; prime exposed cut ends and any bare filler. Unfinished battens require primer before finish paint. Apply the interior paint system recommended for the substrate, keeping coats thin enough to preserve the intended reveals. Remove painter’s tape while the final coat is set but not fully hard if the paint manufacturer recommends that timing.
Common problems and fixes
Uneven gaps at the last bay
This usually means the pattern was divided from one corner without checking the opposite boundary. Recalculate the clear width before cutting, or redistribute the bays so both side conditions are intentional. Do not hide a visibly narrow strip behind a random piece of trim.

Battens that are not plumb
Check the wall reference, not the floor or ceiling. Remove and reset a board that is visibly out of plumb; filler and paint will not make a leaning line look straight.
Texture showing between battens
If the existing wall texture remains objectionable, stop and evaluate a panel-backed approach rather than trying to skim every small area after trim is installed. A smooth panel changes the wall thickness and may require casing or box adjustments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCracked caulk or open joints
Cracking can indicate movement, insufficient cure time, contamination or a gap that is too large for caulk. Remove failed material, secure the board, clean the joint and recaulk with a paintable product rated for interior trim.
Paint flashing over filled spots
Spot-prime filler and exposed MDF before the finish coat. Differences in porosity can remain visible even when the color matches.
Safety and quality checks before you finish Part 1
- Wear eye and hearing protection when cutting, and use a suitable respirator for MDF dust and sanding.
- Keep hands clear of saw blades and nailer contact points; disconnect tools before changing blades or clearing jams.
- Locate electrical and plumbing hazards before driving long fasteners.
- Confirm that every switch and receptacle remains serviceable and that cover plates can sit flat.
- Check all rails with a level and all vertical battens with a plumb reference.
- Verify that adhesive, filler, caulk, primer and paint are compatible with MDF, drywall and any panel board you used.
- Keep the product instructions for any shiplap or panel system beside you; manufacturer-specific edge, gap and fastening rules override generic examples.
At the end of this planning and installation stage, you should have a measured, consistently spaced wall assembly with secure trim and no unresolved electrical, moisture or substrate problems. The finish work is only as durable as that underlying layout.
