A successful flatpack kitchen renovation is won before the first cabinet is assembled. Measure the room at several points, finish building and utility work, check the delivery, then install in a controlled order: cabinets, worktops, cut-outs, backsplash and final connections. You can often assemble units yourself, but gas, water and electrical work, loaded wall cabinets and precise worktop cutting deserve qualified or highly experienced help.

A before-and-after kitchen story is not only a visual makeover. The useful transformation is from a room that is unmeasured, partly prepared and full of unresolved decisions to one in which every cabinet, appliance, socket and finish has a defined place. A flatpack system makes components easier to transport and assemble, but it does not remove the need for accurate surveying, structural preparation or safe services work.

Before: an information and preparation problem
Before ordering, the room may have uneven walls, out-of-square corners, unfinished flooring, temporary plumbing or sockets in the wrong locations. Appliances may have clearances that conflict with a proposed cabinet run. Those issues are cheap to resolve on paper and expensive to discover after delivery.
After: a coordinated installation
The finished result should have level cabinet runs, doors and drawers that open without clashes, worktops sealed at every cut edge, appliances with the clearances specified by their manufacturers, and utilities connected by the appropriate qualified tradesperson. The appearance follows from decisions made in the preparation stage.
Measure the room before you design or order
Make a measured drawing rather than relying on one wall-to-wall dimension. Record every wall, corner, opening and fixed obstruction, then mark the position and height of windows, doors, radiators, boiler equipment, soil pipes, stopcocks, sockets, switches, lights and existing appliance connections.
Measure at several heights
Supplier planning guidance recommends measuring each wall at multiple heights because older rooms are rarely perfectly square or straight. Take readings near the floor, at worktop height and higher up. Note the smallest usable dimension, not merely the largest. Check diagonals or corner-to-corner measurements where a run must fit tightly.
Verify the selected system and appliances
Standard cabinet dimensions are a starting point, not a guarantee that every range or appliance will fit your room. Check the actual cabinet widths, heights, plinth depth, end-panel thickness, filler requirements and worktop overhang for the system you intend to buy. Read each appliance installation instruction for ventilation, door swing, service access and minimum clearances. Confirm that a dishwasher, oven, fridge or washing machine can open without striking a wall, handle or adjacent appliance.

Plan storage and working zones
Settle the locations of base, wall and tall units before choosing handles or decorative panels. Decide where preparation, cooking and washing will happen, and place frequently used storage close to those zones. Allow space for fillers at walls and corners so doors and drawers can open. Include end panels, plinths, cornice or pelmet where the design requires them; omitting these from the drawing can leave a run the wrong length.
Place sockets and lighting early
Mark socket, switch and lighting positions on the plan before the backsplash is finished. Include appliance outlets, extractor supplies, under-cabinet lighting and any dedicated circuits required by the appliance instructions. Do not assume a socket hidden behind a cabinet will remain accessible or suitable for a built-in appliance.
Finish the room and services before installation day
The installation area must be structurally ready. IKEA UK’s service workflow requires construction and groundwork—including work to walls, windows, doorways, ceilings and flooring—to be complete before its installers start. Utilities should be in their final positions, and the homeowner is responsible for any applicable planning permission and building-regulation consent. Those are that provider’s requirements; establish the rules that apply to your own property and location.
- Repair or strengthen walls and make sure the floor is firm and reasonably level.
- Complete plastering, decorating that will be hidden by cabinets, flooring and skirting decisions.
- Confirm water, waste, gas and electrical points against the signed-off layout.
- Arrange a temporary cooking and washing setup if the existing kitchen will be unusable.
- Clear a dry storage area for flatpack cartons, worktops and appliances.
Do not ask an installer to compensate for unfinished building work by packing out, relocating or cutting around avoidable defects. Those changes can alter the agreed scope and delay the job.
Use a delivery-to-finish sequence
A controlled sequence prevents damaged parts, inaccessible services and rework. The following order combines the supplier guidance into a practical plan.

- Complete construction and room preparation. Finish walls, floor, ceiling, openings and any structural work. Put utility points in their final positions and confirm who is responsible for each connection.
- Schedule delivery ahead of fitting. IKEA planning guidance suggests arranging delivery five to seven days before installation; its current UK service page recommends leaving seven days where possible so the order can be checked. This is planning advice, not a guarantee of availability or a universal renovation duration.
- Receive and inspect everything. Match every carton, panel, worktop and appliance to the order. Look for crushed packaging, chipped panels, incorrect colours and missing fittings. Report discrepancies promptly; late discoveries can stop an installer while replacement parts are obtained.
- Assemble and secure cabinets. Follow the instructions for the exact system. Build on a protected surface, keep hardware with its unit and label doors and panels. Level the base run, join cabinets correctly and fix them to the wall or rail with hardware suited to the wall construction.
- Install tall and wall units safely. Check the fixing points, load path and cabinet alignment before lifting. Wall cabinets must be secured to sound material with appropriate fixings; decorative assembly alone is not a structural connection.
- Fit the worktop and cut-outs. Dry-fit sections, confirm appliance positions and make sink or hob cut-outs from the relevant worktop and appliance instructions. Seal exposed cut edges as specified for the material to limit moisture ingress.
- Complete the backsplash and finishing work. Install splashback or tiles after the worktop position is fixed, then fit handles, panels, plinths, lighting and trim. Touch up paint only after dusty cutting and drilling are finished.
- Complete final connections and checks. Qualified trades should connect gas, water and electricity where required. Test doors, drawers, waste flow, taps, appliances, lighting and extractor operation, then clean and retain manuals and spare parts.
Inspect the flatpack order before opening every box
Use the order list as a checklist. Count cabinet frames, doors, drawer fronts, hinges, runners, legs, rails, cover panels, fillers, plinths, handles, worktop sections and appliance accessories. Photograph damaged cartons and keep packaging until you are satisfied that the contents are sound. Separate hardware by cabinet and keep the assembly instructions with the corresponding components.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA missing hinge discovered during cabinet assembly is inconvenient; a missing worktop section or damaged appliance discovered after the old kitchen is removed can halt the entire renovation. If a service includes a pre-installation visit, have the signed-off plan and the inspected order ready for that appointment.
Tools, skill and safety boundaries
IKEA’s UK METOD guide lists a measuring tape, electric drill or screwdriver and spirit level among basic tools. It also identifies a jigsaw, saws, clamps, a hole cutter and hand tools as useful additions, and recommends safety glasses when using power tools. Adapt that list to the products and materials in your chosen system.
- Essential for layout: tape measure, pencil, straightedge and spirit level.
- For assembly and fixing: drill/driver with suitable bits, hand screwdrivers, clamps and wall-fixing hardware selected for the wall.
- For worktops and panels: a jigsaw or saw, fine-tooth blades, a hole cutter and a method of supporting the panel during cutting.
- For protection: eye protection, dust control, hearing protection where appropriate and a stable work surface.
Flatpack assembly may be manageable for a careful DIYer, but the guide distinguishes higher-skill work. Wall-cabinet installation and worktop cutting require more expertise than simply tightening fittings. A level-looking cabinet that is not properly anchored can become dangerous once loaded with crockery.
Services that need qualified trades
The IKEA guide states: “Use a qualified trades professional to disconnect and reconnect your gas, water and electricity.” Gas appliances must be disconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The standard IKEA installation service also excludes electrical and gas connections, so paying for cabinet fitting does not automatically include those services. Confirm who will isolate, move, reconnect and certify each utility before work starts.

DIY or a fitting service?
Choose by task, risk and scope rather than by the label “flatpack”. You may assemble carcasses and fit handles while commissioning specialists for services and worktops. Alternatively, a fitting service can coordinate most physical installation while you retain responsibility for preparation and inspection.
| Decision area | DIY route | Paid installation route |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet assembly and securing | You provide labour, tools, levelling and wall fixings; responsibility for alignment and safe anchoring remains with you. | The provider fits and secures cabinets within its written scope; verify wall preparation and fixing assumptions. |
| Worktops and cut-outs | You measure, cut and seal; mistakes can damage an expensive section or appliance fit. | Some services include laminate and custom-made worktops and sink or hob cut-outs; stone, quartz, acrylic and ceramic may require a separate specialist partner. |
| Gas and electrical connections | Use qualified professionals for disconnection and reconnection. | Do not assume they are included: IKEA’s standard service excludes electrical and gas connections. |
| Old kitchen removal | You organise isolation, dismantling, transport and disposal safely. | Removal and disposal may be excluded or separately arranged; obtain this in writing. |
| Planning and measuring | You own the survey, layout and appliance checks. | The cited standard IKEA service excludes measuring or planning; its workflow uses a pre-installation visit to check the room against a signed-off plan. |
| Timing and remedies | Your schedule depends on your availability, tools and replacement-part lead times. | Ask for the planned dates, delay process, warranty and remedial arrangements in the quote. |
There is no reliable generic labour-saving or total-cost figure established for flatpack kitchens. Compare itemised quotes rather than assuming DIY is always cheaper.
What to demand in a written installation quote
Installation pages often describe a service in broad terms, while exclusions determine what you will actually need to organise. Ask the provider to list:
- Cabinet assembly, levelling, joining and wall fixing.
- Which worktop materials are included and who templates, transports and fits specialist materials.
- Sink, hob and tap cut-outs, edge sealing and splashback work.
- Appliance positioning, doors and panels, handles, plinths, lighting and finishing.
- Electrical, gas, plumbing and extractor connections, including the qualifications required.
- Removal of the old kitchen, packaging and waste disposal.
- Preparation standards for walls, floors, windows, doorways and ceilings.
- Pre-installation inspection, variation charges, schedule, warranty and the process for damaged or missing items.
Use the quote to compare like with like. A lower headline price may simply omit worktop templating, disposal, service connections or remedial visits.

Cabinets do not fit the measured run
Recheck the smallest wall measurement, corner squareness, fillers and end panels. Do not force a cabinet into a space reserved for an opening door or appliance. Resolve the drawing before cutting or returning components.

Wall cabinets pull away from the wall
Stop loading the units. Check the wall construction, locate solid fixing points and use a fixing system rated for the cabinet and contents. If the wall cannot support the load, obtain professional advice before proceeding.
Worktop or sink cut-out is wrong
Make a full-size mark-up, verify the sink and hob templates and check the position of drawers, rails and appliances below. Cut only after the worktop is supported and the final cabinet alignment is confirmed. Seal the cut edge exactly as the material instructions require.
Parts are missing or damaged
Keep the installation moving on unaffected units, but report the discrepancy immediately with the order number and photographs. A service provider may treat late-discovered damage as a source of delay or a variation.
Utilities are not in their final positions
Do not hide a temporary connection behind a cabinet. Pause and have the relevant qualified trade relocate or certify it before the cabinet run is closed.
Timing: what the available guidance does and does not say
IKEA UK states that most of its installations average five to seven days. That is the provider’s stated average for its installation service, not a DIY duration guarantee and not a promise that every room will take that long. Your schedule depends on preparation, delivery accuracy, replacement parts, worktop material, specialist trades and any structural or service changes.
Leaving about a week between delivery and fitting where possible gives you time to inspect the order and resolve obvious problems. It does not eliminate the need for a pre-installation check or guarantee that replacements will arrive within that interval.
Before-and-after handover checklist
- Every cabinet is level, joined and fixed with suitable hardware.
- Wall units are securely anchored and doors are adjusted.
- Drawers, doors and appliances open without collisions.
- Worktop joints and cut edges are sealed as specified.
- Sink, tap, waste, dishwasher and washing-machine connections are leak-free.
- Gas work has been completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer where applicable.
- Sockets, lights, extractor and appliance circuits have been tested by the appropriate professional.
- Backsplash, panels, fillers, plinths, handles and touch-ups are complete.
- Packaging and old materials are removed under the agreed scope.
- You have manuals, guarantees, spare fittings, certificates and a record of unresolved snags.
The practical verdict
Plan the flatpack kitchen as a small building project, not a box-opening exercise. A measured drawing, finished room, inspected delivery and written division of responsibilities create the conditions for a clean before-and-after result. DIY is most defensible for careful assembly and finishing; bring in qualified trades for gas, water and electricity, and be honest about whether you can safely fix loaded wall cabinets and cut worktops. Before committing to a service, confirm its current local scope, exclusions, lead time and itemised price in writing.
