Choose your bedroom window treatment by starting with the job it must do: screen neighbors, soften glare, darken the room, or provide adjustable control. Then measure the opening, decide where the fabric will end, and size the rod for both the glass and the space where the panels will stack.

Sheers can diffuse strong daylight and obscure a view to some degree, while denser curtains provide more privacy when closed. A sheer-and-curtain or blind-and-curtain combination gives you separate daytime and nighttime settings without guessing what one fabric can do.
Start with the privacy and light problem
Look at the bedroom from outside at the times you use it. A window facing a close neighbor or a public walkway needs a different solution from one facing a private garden. Check both daylight and nighttime conditions: a fabric that looks private in daylight can reveal silhouettes when the bedroom is brighter than the outside.

| Need | Useful starting arrangement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Soften glare while keeping daylight | Sheer panels, optionally with a blind | Whether people can still see through the fabric from outside |
| Screen an unattractive view | Less-transparent curtains or a layered treatment | Coverage at the sides and the gap above the window |
| Privacy after dark | Drawn, more opaque curtains, often over sheers or blinds | Edge gaps, fabric transparency, and interior lighting |
| Reduce early-morning light or glare | Room-darkening construction, layered at the window | Light leaking around the edges; do not assume total darkness |
| Adjust privacy and brightness through the day | Sheers plus curtains, or curtains plus a blind | That each layer can move independently |
“Blackout” is not a universal result. Darkness depends on the fabric, lining, how closely the curtain fits the opening, and light entering around the top and sides. Unless a particular product specifies its construction and coverage, describe it as room darkening rather than promising complete darkness.
Choose opacity before color or pattern
Sheers
Sheer curtains soften strong light and can make a bedroom feel less exposed while preserving a bright, airy appearance. They are not a guaranteed privacy screen in every lighting condition. Test a sample or stand outside after dark with the room lights on if nighttime privacy matters.

Opaque or lined curtains
A denser weave or lining blocks more view when the panels are closed. It also reduces daylight and may reduce glare. Look at the closed panels from the side as well as straight on; a narrow side gap can expose the room even when the center of the window is covered.
Layered treatments
Layering separates functions. Sheers can remain closed for daytime diffusion, while heavier panels close for privacy or sleep. A blind behind the curtains provides another adjustment, but the blind, rod, and curtain must all fit without striking one another or the window handle.
Measure the window and decide the curtain endpoint
Measure before buying either panels or hardware. Record the opening width, the height of the trim, the distance to the ceiling, and the space available on each side. Also note the sill depth, radiator, plants, headboard, desk, and any furniture that could stop the fabric from hanging freely.

1. Measure the opening
- Measure the visible window opening from left to right.
- Measure the opening height and the height of any casing or trim.
- Measure from the proposed rod position to the endpoint you want: sill, below the sill, or floor.
- Repeat width and height measurements at more than one point; older openings may not be perfectly square.
Use the planned rod position, not the top of the glass, as the starting point for curtain length. Write the measurements down with the units clearly marked.

2. Decide where the fabric should end
A sill endpoint keeps fabric clear of a radiator, desk, or deep sill. A below-sill endpoint gives more coverage without reaching the floor. A floor endpoint creates a longer, calmer line when the wall is unobstructed. Whichever you choose, measure to that exact point and account for the curtain heading and hooks specified by the panel maker.
Do not let a floor-length panel drag across a heater or block a door. If a radiator sits below the window, leave the required air circulation and follow local safety guidance. A panel that must stop above the heater may need a separate sill or apron measurement rather than a standard floor length.
3. Allow for fullness and stack-back
The rod must extend beyond the glass far enough for the panels to clear the opening when open. A wider rod also gives more room for fabric to stack at the sides, but the amount of clearance depends on panel fullness, fabric thickness, trim, and available wall space.
Practical guides use different starting points. One IKEA guide recommends at least 15 cm of extension on each side; another discusses approximately 12–15 cm of clearance between the curtain and the window or wall. A Home Depot guide expresses its recommendation in inches. Treat these as planning examples rather than a universal building rule. If the window has wide trim or thick, full panels, increase the side space when the wall allows it.

How wide should the new curtain rod be?
Calculate the rod span as the window width plus the planned extension on the left and right. For example, a 120 cm opening with 15 cm of extension on each side needs a rod that spans at least 150 cm before you account for finials, brackets, or the manufacturer’s adjustable range.
| Measurement | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Window opening width | Measure the glass or opening you want covered, not just the visible wall. |
| Side extension | Add the chosen clearance on both sides so open panels sit away from the glass. |
| Rod span | Opening width + left extension + right extension. |
| Stack-back space | Confirm that trim, a wall return, furniture, or a neighboring door will not block the gathered fabric. |
Check whether the advertised rod length excludes finials. On adjustable rods, keep the overlap inside the manufacturer’s recommended range; extending two sections to their absolute limit can reduce stability. Heavy, lined panels may require a center support even when lightweight sheers would not.
Rod or track: choose the hardware around the room
Decorative rod
A visible rod works when the hardware is part of the bedroom’s style. Choose a finish that relates to existing metalwork, lamps, or handles, and make sure the finials fit between the wall and nearby furniture. Rings, clips, back tabs, and grommets each need a compatible diameter and clearance.
Discreet track
A track is less prominent and can suit a minimal room or a ceiling-mounted installation. Confirm that the track can be fixed to the ceiling or wall you have, that carriers match the curtain hooks, and that the track bends or joins only where the product allows. Tracks are not automatically suitable for heavier curtains; use the stated load limit.

Match the heading to the hardware
Before ordering, identify the curtain heading: rod-pocket, back-tab, tab-top, grommet, pinch-pleat, or another system. A rod-pocket panel may not slide smoothly on a thick rod, while pleated curtains normally need hooks and rings or a compatible track. The hardware should carry the fabric without forcing the heading to bunch or hang unevenly.

Plan the mounting location
Hold the rod or track in place with a second person and check the entire swing of the curtains. Keep the fabric clear of the window handle, radiator, bedside table, plants, and wall art. A higher mount can make the window read taller, but it also increases the required curtain length and may encounter the ceiling or crown molding.
Use the rod manufacturer’s bracket-count guidance, weight limit, and fastener instructions. Do not transfer a bracket spacing or anchor type from one rod to another. The correct fastener depends on whether you are fixing into a stud, masonry, plasterboard, or a ceiling surface.
Protect a painted wall
Newly painted walls can mark when brackets are tightened or curtains rub against them. Let the paint cure according to the paint maker’s instructions, locate solid fixing points, and avoid overtightening. If you later move the rod, remove anchors carefully, fill the holes with a compatible filler, sand flush, prime any exposed patch, and touch up with the stored wall color.

Installation tools and a careful sequence
A typical installation may use a metal tape measure, pencil and paper, level, drill and suitable bits, screwdriver, rod hardware, and—only if the selected system requires cutting—a hand saw. You may not need every item. Follow the product instructions and the requirements of the wall material.
- Confirm the final rod width, curtain length, heading, and panel weight.
- Mark the centerline and the bracket positions using the measured side extensions.
- Use a level to check that both marks align; a sloping rod makes curtains gather unevenly.
- Check for studs, pipes, cables, and other hidden services before drilling.
- Install the specified anchors or fix directly into structural material as directed.
- Attach brackets or the track, tighten hardware firmly without crushing the wall surface, and recheck level.
- Fit the rod, center support, rings, or track carriers. Test the full travel before hanging the final panels.
- Hang the curtains, close them, and inspect privacy from the likely outside viewpoints in both daylight and darkness.
Common problems and fixes
The room is still visible at night
Check whether the fabric is translucent under interior lighting and whether the panels meet in the center. Add a denser layer or blind, widen the overlap, and extend the rod so the side edges cover the trim. Do not rely on sheers alone for nighttime privacy.

Daylight leaks around the edges
Increase side extension if wall space permits, move the mount higher or wider only within the hardware limits, and use a lined or room-darkening layer. A curtain cannot cover a gap it does not reach.
The rod bows or pulls out
Reduce the unsupported span, add the manufacturer-specified center bracket, or use stronger anchors suited to the wall. Check the total fabric weight rather than judging by panel count alone.
The curtains catch on the window or furniture
Move the rod forward with suitable projection brackets, shorten the endpoint, or choose a track with the required offset. Recheck the radiator, handle, sill, and headboard before drilling new holes.
The panels look too short or too long
Measure from the actual hanging point, including rings or hooks, to the intended endpoint. If the error is small, adjust the heading or hem only if the fabric and construction allow it; otherwise exchange for the measured length.
A purchase checklist for the bedroom
- Privacy requirement identified for both daytime and nighttime.
- Sheer, opaque, lined, blind, or layered arrangement selected.
- Opening width and height recorded in consistent units.
- Rod span calculated with side extensions and stack-back space.
- Endpoint chosen around the sill, radiator, furniture, and floor.
- Heading confirmed to fit the rod, rings, clips, or track carriers.
- Bracket count, weight rating, projection, and fasteners checked against the chosen hardware instructions.
- Wall type, studs, pipes, cables, and paint condition considered.
- Tools gathered: tape measure, pencil, level, drill and bits, screwdriver, and any product-specific tools.
The dependable sequence is simple: define the privacy and light settings, measure the opening and endpoint, size the rod for clearance and stack-back, match the heading to the hardware, then mount into the wall with the supplied load and fastener guidance. That process prevents the most expensive mistake—buying panels that cannot cover the window or hardware that cannot safely carry them.
