Measure the quilt top, add the extra fabric your quilting method requires, then calculate how many fabric panels will cover the resulting backing. For a longarm quilt, four inches of overhang on each side is a common starting point—but confirm the exact size with your quilter before buying fabric.

Measure the quilt top and choose the overhang
Measure the finished top’s width and length in more than one place, since a top may not be perfectly square. Use the largest measurements when planning the backing. Add enough fabric beyond every edge for the quilting process and any loading requirements.
Four inches per side is a common longarm starting allowance, according to QuiltMetric. Some reference charts allow about 10 inches extra in both overall dimensions. Requirements vary, so ask the person quilting the quilt for their minimum backing size and preparation instructions before cutting.

Calculate the backing dimensions
Add twice the chosen overhang to both top measurements:
- Backing width: quilt-top width + 2 × overhang per side
- Backing length: quilt-top length + 2 × overhang per side
For example, a 60 × 80-inch top with four inches of overhang on each side needs a backing measuring 68 × 88 inches. This example is documented by CalcCorp and QuiltMetric.

Calculate yardage for standard-width fabric
Quilting cotton is often labeled about 42–45 inches wide, but the selvages are removed before piecing. CalcCorp gives roughly 40–42 inches as usable width for standard fabric. Measure between the selvages on the fabric you plan to buy; the nominal label width alone can overstate how much backing each panel will cover.
- Divide the required backing width by the fabric’s usable width and round up to a whole number of panels.
- For vertical seams, multiply the panel count by the backing length. Add seam allowance for joining the panels.
- For horizontal seams, divide the required backing length by usable fabric width, round up to whole panels, then multiply the panel count by the backing width. Add seam allowance.
- Convert the resulting cut length to yardage and round the purchase up to allow for cutting and preparation.
Using the 68 × 88-inch example, two panels from 42-inch fabric are needed across the 68-inch backing width. At 88 inches long per panel, the vertical-seam layout requires two 88-inch lengths, plus seam allowance. If the usable width is closer to 40 inches, two panels still cover the width, but always check that the combined usable width after joining and trimming meets the required dimension.

Choose vertical or horizontal seams
| Layout | How to estimate | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical seams | Round backing width ÷ usable fabric width up to a whole panel count; multiply by backing length. | Often a straightforward layout, but long seams run the length of the quilt. Check directional prints and seam placement. |
| Horizontal seams | Round backing length ÷ usable fabric width up to a whole panel count; multiply by backing width. | May use a different amount of fabric and create seams across the quilt’s width. Consider print direction, grain, and offcuts. |
Compare the two cut-length estimates rather than assuming one orientation always uses less. The better option depends on the quilt dimensions, fabric width, print direction, seam placement, and resulting waste. Include seam allowance in either layout, and avoid placing a bulky seam where it will interfere with quilting if your provider gives placement guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether a 108-inch wideback makes sense
A 108-inch wideback can reduce the number of seams or eliminate them for a backing that fits within its usable width. It may be convenient when a standard-width layout would require several joined panels. Before choosing it, check the actual usable width after selvage removal, the price and availability, and whether its print direction suits the quilt. A backing dimension that exceeds the wideback’s usable width will still need piecing.

| Factor | Standard-width fabric | 108-inch wideback |
|---|---|---|
| Usable width | Often about 40–42 inches for fabric labeled 42–45 inches wide; measure the fabric. | Check the usable width of the specific fabric; the nominal width is not the finished backing width. |
| Seams | Usually needs multiple panels for a large backing. | Can reduce seams when the backing fits within the usable width. |
| Print direction | Panel orientation can affect how a directional print appears. | Check the print’s direction and how it will lie on the quilt. |
| Cost and availability | Compare the yardage needed and local options. | Compare the specific wideback’s price and availability with the standard-fabric layout. |
| Preparation and loading | Follow the quilting provider’s preparation and loading requirements. | Confirm that the provider accepts the fabric and backing dimensions. |
Use reference yardages as a starting point
Fat Quarter Shop’s 2019 reference chart, based on 42-inch fabric, lists these example backing amounts:
| Quilt size category | Listed backing yardage |
|---|---|
| Crib | 2⅝ yd |
| Lap | 3¼ yd |
| Twin | 5⅜ yd |
| Full | 7⅓ yd |
| Queen | 7⅞ yd |
| King | 9⅔ yd |
These are chart examples, not a substitute for calculating from your measured top and the usable width of your chosen fabric. Quilt dimensions vary, as do overhang needs and seam layouts.
Prepare the backing for quilting
Prewash when appropriate, and follow the quilter’s instructions about washing, pressing, trimming, and seam construction. Fabric shrinkage or a provider’s loading requirements can make a close yardage estimate insufficient. Give the quilter the finished backing dimensions and confirm the minimum overhang before you cut or join the panels.
