Before sending a quilt top to a longarm quilter, press it flat, remove loose threads, check and secure exposed seams, and square the edges as needed. Mark the top edge if the design has a preferred orientation. Then confirm the quilter’s current requirements for the backing, batting, edge stitching, and whether the layers should arrive separately or basted together.
Press the top and inspect the seams
Press the quilt top so it lies as flat as possible and the seams lie flat. Check both sides for loose threads; clip dark threads behind light fabrics because they may show through. Repair any seams that are coming undone, paying particular attention to the perimeter.

If substantial piecing reaches the edge, ask whether the quilter wants the perimeter secured. Your Longarm Quilter recommends edge basting about 1/8 inch from the edge when needed, while other services ask for stay-stitching. These are provider-specific directions, not a universal requirement. See Your Longarm Quilter’s preparation instructions.
Check the shape and square the edges
Look across the top, bottom, and center to see whether the quilt top is reasonably even. Square or trim the outside edges as needed; do not assume the service will trim the top for you. A wavy border or excess fullness can lead to tucks or pleats during quilting. The Longarm Guild’s preparation guidance cautions that a flared or overly full top may pucker or pleat after quilting; that is a risk, not a guarantee that every small variation will cause a defect.

One provider suggests comparing the center and outside-edge measurements vertically and horizontally, and warns that a difference greater than an inch may lead to tucks. Treat that as a diagnostic suggestion from that provider, not an industry-wide tolerance.
Clear anything that could catch on the machine
Remove pins, buttons, charms, sequins, and other items that could catch on the machine foot. If you want embellishments, attach them after quilting when possible. Ask the service whether it wants the perimeter stay-stitched and where the stitching should go; one checklist specifies stitching within the binding area, while other instructions differ.

Mark the quilt’s orientation
If the design has a definite top edge, mark it clearly with a safety pin and note or another marker. If the backing is directional or must face a particular way, mark its orientation too. Providers vary in what they ask clients to identify: one requests the top-left edge, while another asks for the top of both the quilt and backing.
Confirm backing, batting, and basting requirements
Do not cut backing or batting based on a generic allowance. The reviewed provider instructions include examples of four inches of extra backing on every side, five inches on every side, and a backing at least eight inches greater than the quilt top in both total width and length. Your Longarm Quilter, for example, states that backing must be at least five inches larger on all sides. These are individual service specifications; confirm the exact dimensions with the quilter you selected before cutting.

Ask whether the top, batting, and backing should be delivered as separate pieces or layered together. Some services say not to baste, pin, or tack the layers; other guidance recommends securing exposed edges. Backing construction can also have service-specific rules: if you are piecing it, check whether the provider specifies seam allowance or direction, requires selvages removed from pieced seams, or wants the backing squared and pressed.
