To preserve flowers in a frame, choose the drying method to match the look you want: press flowers flat for a picture frame, or dry them in silica gel to retain more of their natural shape for a shadow box. Keep the dried material clear of the glazing, and display the frame away from direct sunlight.
Choose between a flat picture and a dimensional display
Pressing is the right route for a flat botanical composition. It makes flowers flat, so thick or three-dimensional blooms lose their shape. For a display that preserves more of a bloom’s natural form, dry it in silica gel and use a deep frame or shadow box with enough interior clearance.
UF/IFAS Extension describes silica gel as “the fastest-acting drying agent available” and says plant materials dried in it retain good color. That does not mean every flower dries on the same schedule or keeps its original color indefinitely.

How to frame pressed flowers
- Press the flowers. Use a flower press or another appropriate pressing setup until the flowers are dry and flat. Thick blooms will be flattened rather than kept three-dimensional.
- Plan the arrangement. Purdue Extension describes covering cardboard with fabric or paper, sketching a design, and arranging the pressed flowers on the backing.
- Attach and frame. Glue the flowers to the backing, then place the composition in a picture frame. Use a mat or spacers to keep the flowers from touching the glass or acrylic.

How to dry and frame dimensional flowers
- Use flower-drying silica gel. Follow the product directions and check the specimen; drying time depends on the flower and setup, and no single schedule applies to every bloom.
- Arrange the dried flower in a shadow box. Choose a frame deep enough that petals and foliage are not compressed.
- Add clearance from the glazing. Use a suitable mat or perimeter spacers so the flower does not touch the glass or acrylic. Contact can crush delicate material.

- Limit light exposure. Keep the frame out of direct sunlight and away from intense light.
- Consider UV-filtering glazing. It reduces exposure to ultraviolet radiation, but it cannot prevent all light-related fading. The Library of Congress notes in guidance about paper that “Filtering out ultraviolet radiation removes the most damaging part of sunlight, but all light is damaging to paper.” Flowers are not paper, so this is a conservative display principle rather than a flower-specific test.
- Choose stable framing materials. Conservation guidance favors appropriate mat board, stable backing, and UV-opaque acrylic or other suitable glazing. A home project can apply the core ideas—stable materials, clearance, and reduced light—without treating the result as permanently preserved.
