The most reliable method is Canva + PDF Print + Adobe Acrobat Reader’s Poster setting. Create the entire picture at its intended finished size in Canva, export it as a PDF, then let Acrobat split the oversized page across ordinary Letter or A4 sheets. You can trim and join the printed tiles into one large poster.
The quick method
- Create one large Canva design at the poster’s finished dimensions.
- Export it through Share > Download > PDF Print.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
- Choose File > Print, then select Poster under Page Sizing & Handling.
- Set the tile scale and overlap, inspect the preview, and print a test sheet.
- Trim and assemble the pages from the center outward.
Acrobat’s Poster feature is designed to divide one large PDF page across several sheets. Its controls include tile scale, overlap, cut marks, labels, and a preview showing the required sheets. See Adobe’s Poster printing instructions and Reader printing guide.
What you are actually printing
These options are easy to confuse:
- Poster: Splits one oversized picture across multiple sheets. This is the option you need.
- Multiple: Shrinks several PDF pages onto one sheet. It does not enlarge one picture across several sheets.
- Multiple Canva pages: Prints separate pages, not one continuous poster.
Create the large design in Canva
- Open Canva and create a new design using Custom size.
- Enter the intended finished size, such as 18 × 24 inches or 24 × 36 inches. Canva lists additional poster-size examples on its poster size guide.
- Upload your image and add it to the page.
- Use Set image as background or resize the image manually.
- Check the crop carefully. Filling the canvas can remove part of the original image.
- Keep faces, lettering, logos, and other important details away from likely tile seams.
For example, a 24 × 36-inch Canva page can be tiled onto Letter paper, but the exact number of sheets depends on paper orientation, printer margins, tile scale, and overlap. Use Acrobat’s preview rather than assuming a fixed page count.

For a poster containing text, illustrations, or graphics, choose PDF Print. It generally preserves the page dimensions and is preferable to a screenshot. A high-resolution PNG can work for a purely raster image, but PDF Print is the practical general-purpose choice.

Canva documents print-oriented PDF export and options such as bleed, crop marks, and CMYK-related settings in its export documentation. Interface labels can vary by device, account, and current Canva version.
Should you use bleed and crop marks?
Not automatically for home tiling. Bleed extends artwork beyond a trim edge, while crop marks indicate where a professionally printed piece should be cut. They are not what makes Acrobat divide a poster into pages, and extra marks can be mistaken for part of the image during home assembly.
Use them only when a commercial printer requests them. Follow that printer’s specifications if you are ordering a finished poster.

Split the PDF across printer paper
- Download the PDF to your computer rather than printing from Canva’s browser preview.
- Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Choose File > Print.
- Select your printer and the actual paper size, such as Letter or A4.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, choose Poster.
- Review the preview and confirm the page orientation.
- Set Tile Scale to 100% as the starting point.
- Add a small Overlap, such as 0.25–0.5 inches, to make alignment easier.
- Optionally enable Cut marks and Labels.
- Enable Tile only large pages if the PDF contains both ordinary and oversized pages.
At 100% tile scale, Acrobat aims to preserve the physical dimensions of the Canva page. A higher percentage enlarges the finished poster; a lower percentage reduces it.

Keep the finished poster the right size
Do not select Fit, Shrink, or an unintended printer-driver scaling option when exact dimensions matter. Fit reduces or enlarges a page to fit one sheet, which defeats the purpose of tiling. Adobe explains the differences between Fit, Actual Size, and Custom Scale.
Before printing the full job:
- Check that the Canva page dimensions are correct.
- Confirm the same paper size is loaded for every sheet.
- Make sure the printer is not applying a second “fit to page” adjustment.
- Print one test tile containing a ruler, measured line, or calibration square.
- Measure the result before using a full pack of paper.
Letter and A4 paper are different sizes, and most printers leave a non-printable margin. The nominal sheet size therefore does not equal the printable tile area.
Assemble the printed pages
- Lay the sheets on a clean floor or large table.
- Use Acrobat’s labels, if enabled, to arrange rows and columns.
- Match recognizable image features across each seam.
- Trim only one edge of overlapping sheets where possible.
- Use a ruler and sharp craft knife for straight cuts.
- Tape the joins from the back.
- Build one row at a time, then connect the rows.
- Mount the finished picture on a wall, cardboard, or foam board if needed.
No overlap uses less paper but is harder to align. A small overlap provides some tolerance, while a larger overlap is easier to match but requires more trimming. Front-side tape is quick but visible; back-side tape looks cleaner. Glue is more permanent but can wrinkle paper and makes corrections difficult.
Fix common problems
White borders appear
Many home printers cannot print to the absolute edge of the sheet. If supported, enable the printer’s borderless mode for the selected paper. Otherwise, design with a deliberate white border, use a slightly larger scale and trim the margins, choose larger paper, or order a commercial print. Printer guidance from FedEx Office also notes that standard documents commonly include margins.

The image looks blurry
Printing larger does not create new image detail. Use the original file instead of a screenshot or social-media download, avoid dramatically enlarging a small image, inspect the Canva design at high zoom, and print a test section first. A 300 DPI target is common in print production, but it is not a universal requirement: viewing distance and the source image matter. Changing DPI metadata alone cannot add detail.
The Poster option is missing
You may be using a browser preview or a PDF viewer without a tiling feature. Download the file, open it in Acrobat Reader, and use its full print dialog. Confirm that the PDF contains one oversized page rather than several ordinary pages. If Poster is still unavailable, use a compatible PDF-tiling application or a print shop; not every PDF viewer provides this feature.
The poster prints too small
Check that you selected Poster, not Multiple, and that Tile Scale is 100% or higher. Also check for a second scaling command in the printer dialog.
A seam crosses text or a face
Return to Canva and reposition the important content. You can also change the poster dimensions or paper orientation so the tile boundaries fall in less noticeable areas.

Colors look different
Screen colors, home printers, and commercial presses can differ. Canva’s available color-export settings and a printer’s RGB/CMYK workflow vary. For color-critical work, follow the commercial printer’s specifications and request a proof.
Can Canva do the tiling by itself?
Canva is well suited to creating the oversized page, positioning the image, and exporting the file. The most consistently documented workflow for automatically splitting that page across ordinary printer sheets uses Acrobat’s Poster setting or another dedicated PDF-tiling tool. Canva’s interface and features can change, so do not rely on a Canva-only tiling control unless it is available in your current account and device.

Home tiling is inexpensive and useful for temporary classroom displays, crafts, events, and prototypes. A commercial poster is usually better when you need borderless output, a clean one-piece finish, durable paper, mounting, lamination, very large dimensions, or consistent color.

FedEx Office lists poster options such as 16 × 20, 18 × 24, 22 × 28, 24 × 36, and 36 × 48 inches, with availability and turnaround varying by location and order details. See its poster printing page. A local print shop may request exact dimensions, bleed, crop marks, color mode, and resolution; its specifications override general advice.
