Protect a festival venue by creating a sealed work zone before paint is opened. Remove movable items, cover the complete floor footprint and access paths, tape seams and edges, mask every vulnerable wall feature and opening, and contain all spray work inside an enclosure. Keep ventilation, flammable-material control, fire precautions and public access restrictions running for the entire job—not only during application.

Start with a containment plan, not a drop cloth

A festival installation combines painting hazards that are manageable on a private job but costly in a public venue: wet paint can transfer to finished floors, dust and overspray can travel into neighboring exhibits, and visitors may enter the work area while coatings are still curing. Treat the installation as a temporary industrial work zone with a documented boundary, controlled entry and a daily close-down routine.

There is no dependable universal figure for how much paint a festival installation will spill or how much damage it will cause. Material quantities must be calculated from the measured footprint, perimeter, number of access points, application method and expected wind or overspray conditions. A small sample job or a narrow room should not be used as a quantity estimate for a large installation.

1. Survey and isolate the site

Document the pre-work condition

Photograph floors, walls, corners, thresholds, trim, hardware, outlets, switches, doors and vents before any covering is installed. Record existing scratches, chips, stains and loose finishes. These photographs establish the condition you must return to and reveal fragile surfaces that need a different tape or covering strategy.

Identify floor finishes that can be damaged by adhesive, trapped moisture, abrasion or concentrated loads from ladders and staging. Check whether wall coverings, fabric panels, temporary scenic surfaces or painted finishes can tolerate low-tack tape. If the venue has a facilities representative, have that person confirm the acceptable tapes, weights and cleaning methods before setup.

Remove what can be removed

Take furniture, equipment, artwork, display components and loose signage out of the zone. Do not rely on a plastic cover over an item that could be moved; removing it gives you more working room and eliminates a surface that can be struck by ladders, contaminated by spray or used as an unplanned storage shelf.

Establish a visible boundary

Use cones, barrier tape or temporary fencing to define the work zone. Place warning signs at every approach, including service corridors and backstage routes. Assign a controlled entry point so workers do not repeatedly break the seal around the coverings. Keep visitors, exhibitors and unauthorized workers outside the boundary until the area is released.

2. Calculate how much protection you need

Measure the entire paint footprint, not just the area directly under a mural or scenic panel. Include ladders, mixing stations, staging, drying racks, worker standing areas and every route used to carry paint or equipment. Add the perimeter extension required by the application and location.

Interior baseline: six feet or more

For interior containment, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lead-safe training guidance from 2011 specifies taped-down plastic sheeting at least six feet from the paint-disturbance area, or farther when needed to contain dust and debris. The official wording is: “Cover the floor surface, including installed carpet, with taped-down plastic sheeting in the work area 6 feet from the area of paint disturbance or a sufficient distance to contain the dust, whichever is greater.”

Exterior baseline: 10 feet or far enough to catch debris

EPA exterior-renovation guidance from 2019 recommends impermeable ground covering extending 10 feet beyond the renovation perimeter, or far enough to collect falling paint debris. Extend beyond 10 feet when wind, height, scaffolding or the shape of the installation could carry chips and drips farther. The sheet must be anchored without creating a trip hazard and inspected after weather changes.

Allow for seams, overlaps and replacements

Order enough material to create overlaps between sheets rather than aligning edges. Add spare plastic, tape and at least one replacement drop cloth for each active work area. Tears, wet contamination and failed tape are normal maintenance events during a long festival build; a precise one-time calculation leaves no margin for repair.

3. Choose floor protection: plastic, canvas or both

Use heavy-duty plastic sheeting or clean reusable canvas drop cloths across the complete work footprint and walking routes. Many installations use both: an impermeable layer where liquid spills are most likely and canvas in worker paths where traction and repeated handling matter. Do not place a visibly wet plastic sheet where people must walk.

Factor Heavy-duty plastic sheeting Canvas or other reusable drop cloth
Impermeability Creates a liquid barrier when intact and when seams and edges are taped; punctures and open seams defeat it. Absorbs some liquid rather than acting as a guaranteed spill barrier; use an impermeable layer beneath for high-spill operations.
Slip resistance Can become slippery when wet or when paint contaminates the surface; replace wet sections and keep walking routes controlled. Usually offers a more stable walking surface when laid flat and kept dry; folds and bunched edges can still cause trips.
Reusability Reuse depends on thickness, cleanliness and whether it survived removal without tears. Designed for repeated use when cleaned, dried and inspected between shifts.
Cleanup speed Fast to fold or roll after chips and dried drips are collected, provided the sheet is not torn. Requires shaking, cleaning and complete drying before storage; wet fabric can retain coating residue.
Substrate compatibility Use low-tack tape on finished floors and test a small area; stronger tape is reserved for sheet-to-sheet seams where the substrate permits. Generally avoids adhesive over broad areas, but its backing, dirt and trapped moisture still need to be checked against the floor finish.
Wind resistance Lightweight and likely to lift outdoors unless weighted or anchored at edges and overlaps. Heavier fabric resists light movement better, but exposed edges still need securing in wind.
Cost per covered square metre Not stated by EPA guidance; calculate from the selected product, required thickness, overlaps and replacement allowance. Not stated by EPA guidance; calculate from purchase or hire cost, usable life and cleaning requirements.

Whatever the material, keep the walking surface flat. Fold or tape down protruding edges, avoid loose loops of tape and route cables outside the main path or cover them with an approved cable protector.

4. Build the floor protection

  1. Clear and clean. Remove movable items and sweep loose grit from the floor. Grit under a sheet can scratch a finished surface when workers walk over it.
  2. Lay the first layer. Cover the full footprint, staging positions and access routes. Orient seams away from the most heavily trafficked direction where possible.
  3. Overlap every seam. Make adjacent sheets overlap rather than meeting edge to edge. Tape the overlap with a product compatible with the substrate; use stronger duct tape for sheet seams only where the venue permits it.
  4. Seal the perimeter. Tape the outer edges continuously enough to stop paint, dust and chips from working underneath. Pay special attention to wall-floor junctions, thresholds and corners.
  5. Protect transitions. At doorways and route changes, add a clean sacrificial section that can be replaced without disturbing the sealed perimeter.
  6. Inspect before paint arrives. Walk the entire zone, check for wrinkles and gaps, and confirm that no tape crosses an emergency route or creates a trip point.

5. Seal walls, corners and openings

Mask the surfaces most likely to be hit

Mask wall-floor junctions, trim, baseboards, hardware, switches, outlets, fixtures and door edges. Apply low-tack painter’s or masking tape to delicate finishes after testing an inconspicuous area. Press the tape edge firmly enough to prevent seepage, but do not stretch it so tightly that it lifts as the temperature changes.

Cover doors and vents when migration is possible

Use taped plastic over doors, vents and other openings where dust or overspray could migrate. Maintain one controlled entry point rather than allowing workers to pull coverings aside at several locations. Never block a required exit, emergency access route or life-safety device; coordinate any temporary cover with the venue’s responsible person.

Protect neighboring exhibits

Where a wall is shared with another exhibit, build a second barrier or temporary screen rather than relying on a single strip of tape. Keep tools, ladders and paint containers inside the boundary so accidental contact cannot mark the adjacent display.

6. Contain spray application

Airless and aerosol spraying create a higher overspray risk than brush or roller work. Erect an enclosure or screened work area that prevents airborne coating from reaching floors, walls, pedestrians or neighboring exhibits. Seal joins, inspect the enclosure periodically for gaps and repair tape failures immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Consideration Brush or roller Airless or aerosol spray
Overspray risk Low compared with spraying, though drips, splatter and roller flick can still travel. High; fine droplets can escape through small gaps and settle beyond the immediate wall.
Enclosure requirement Usually a defined work zone and masking are sufficient; add screens for messy textures. Use an enclosure or screened area designed to stop overspray from escaping.
Ventilation demand Provide fresh air and follow the coating safety data sheet. Provide strong fresh-air dilution and mechanical exhaust or air movement when natural ventilation is inadequate.
Crew productivity Not stated; depends on coating, surface, crew and finish requirements. Not stated; do not assume a faster method offsets enclosure and cleanup time.
Cleanup burden Focused on drips, tools, edges and contaminated coverings. Includes enclosure surfaces, filters or screens, settled overspray and a larger inspection area.

Before spraying, test the pattern inside the enclosure and verify that air movement carries vapour away from people and ignition sources. Stop immediately if a visible mist appears outside the containment boundary.

7. Indoor and outdoor setups require different controls

Control Indoor festival venue Outdoor festival site
Containment distance Start with the EPA 2011 six-foot interior baseline or the greater distance needed to contain dust, debris and movement. Use impermeable sheeting extending 10 feet beyond the perimeter or far enough to collect falling debris, following the EPA 2019 exterior guidance.
Weather exposure Temperature and building airflow affect drying and vapour movement; check conditions at the start of each shift. Plan for wind and rain, inspect after weather changes, prevent pooling and replace wet, slippery plastic.
Anchoring Tape seams and edges with materials approved for the floor; keep anchors out of escape routes. Use floor-safe weights or edge battens and secure every exposed edge against wind without puncturing the barrier.
Public access Separate the zone from corridors, exhibits and emergency routes with cones, barrier tape or temporary fencing. Use a clearly visible perimeter that remains stable in wind and does not obstruct festival circulation.
Fire-plan requirements Coordinate ventilation, flammable storage, waste removal and exits with the venue’s fire-risk assessment. Coordinate the same controls with the event’s fire marshal or responsible person, including safe storage of gas cylinders if used.

8. Ventilate and manage paint safely

Maximize fresh air throughout mixing, application and curing. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s 2021 guidance states: “Get as much fresh air as possible to where you are working.” Open doors and windows where the venue’s plan allows. If natural ventilation does not provide enough dilution, use a mechanical air mover or exhaust fan positioned to move vapours away from people and ignition sources.

Do not point an air mover across an uncontained spray operation or toward another exhibit. Airflow that improves worker comfort can also carry solvent vapour, dust or overspray into public areas. Recheck the direction whenever doors, fans or weather conditions change.

Control containers and mixing

  • Keep paint and coating containers labelled and closed when not in use.
  • Mix in a designated, ventilated area inside the work boundary.
  • Keep incompatible products and ignition sources separated according to each coating’s safety data sheet.
  • Clean spills promptly into sealed waste containers rather than washing coating into drains.
  • Select respiratory and other personal protective equipment from the specific coating safety data sheet; product chemistry, application method and ventilation determine the requirement.

9. Run fire and public-safety controls

Complete the venue’s fire-risk assessment before opening containers or bringing equipment into the hall. Keep exits, fire doors, alarm equipment and emergency access unobstructed. Store flammable liquids and gas cylinders in the locations and quantities approved by the venue. Do not leave containers, ladders or waste in a route that must remain clear for evacuation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the end of every shift, remove paint rags, used wipes, disposable plastic and other combustible waste. Put waste into sealed containers suitable for the material and move it to the venue-approved storage point. Confirm that the required fire extinguishers are present and suitable for the hazards identified by the venue.

10. Daily close-down and final handover

Close the zone after each shift

  1. Stop work early enough to inspect the complete boundary before public areas reopen.
  2. Collect loose debris, paint chips, used tape and contaminated waste.
  3. Check adjacent floors, walls, trim, fixtures and exhibits for drips, mist or adhesive lift.
  4. Repair failed tape, replace torn sheeting and resecure outdoor weights or anchors.
  5. Keep wet paint protected until the coating has cured according to its product instructions; do not remove masking simply because the visible surface feels dry.
  6. Confirm that ventilation equipment, containers and waste are left in the approved state overnight.

Demobilize without transferring damage

Before removing coverings, photograph the finished area and compare it with the pre-work record. Lift tape back over itself at a low angle rather than yanking upward. Fold contaminated plastic inward, collect chips and debris, and avoid dragging dirty coverings across clean floors. Clean only with methods approved for the substrate and venue; aggressive solvent or scraping can create more damage than the original spill.

Troubleshooting during the installation

Tape lifts from a finished floor or wall

Stop at the failed section, keep people out, and test a lower-tack tape on an inconspicuous area. Add a mechanical overlap or a compatible edge weight rather than escalating adhesive strength across a sensitive finish. Replace contaminated tape; pressing dirty adhesive back down transfers grit and paint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plastic becomes wet and slippery outdoors

Close the route, remove standing water, and replace or reposition the wet section. Reanchor the perimeter so water cannot pool against a raised edge. Do not assume that a warning sign alone makes a slippery sheet acceptable for public traffic.

Overspray appears outside the enclosure

Stop spraying, isolate the affected area and inspect every seam, corner, doorway and ventilation path. Extend or repair the enclosure, adjust airflow so it exhausts away from people and neighboring exhibits, and clean settled material before it cures.

A visitor or unassigned worker enters

Pause application, escort the person out and inspect the floor, wall and coverings for contact or tracking. Reinforce the boundary and move the controlled entry point if the route is attracting traffic.

Odour builds up indoors

Stop or slow application, maximize approved fresh-air supply and use mechanical exhaust when natural dilution is insufficient. Keep people out until conditions meet the venue’s safety plan and the coating’s safety data sheet requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A spill reaches the substrate

Keep the area isolated, contain the spill using the coating manufacturer’s specified method and notify the venue representative. Do not spread solvent, water or absorbent material without confirming compatibility with the floor or wall finish.

Final release checklist

  • Pre-work photographs and condition notes are complete.
  • All movable items are removed or protected inside the boundary.
