Download your Canva presentation as a Microsoft PowerPoint .pptx file, upload it to Google Drive, open it with Google Slides, and choose File → Save as Google Slides. This creates a native Google Slides copy, but you should check fonts, layouts, media, links, and animations because conversion may change or remove some Canva features.
What you need before starting
- Access to the Canva presentation and permission to download it.
- A Google account with access to Google Drive.
- A desktop browser, preferably. Canva and Google Slides may expose fewer controls on phones and tablets.
- Enough Drive storage for the exported file.
Keep the original Canva design and the exported .pptx file until the converted presentation has passed your quality check. The PowerPoint file is your most useful backup if the Google Slides version needs to be rebuilt.
Method 1: Export Canva as PPTX, then convert it in Google Slides
This is the most reliable general method when you need an editable deck for collaboration, comments, classroom submission, or workplace review. Canva lists Microsoft PowerPoint as a presentation export format, and Google supports opening PowerPoint files in Slides.

1. Export the presentation from Canva
- Open the presentation in Canva on a desktop browser.
- Click Share or the download/export control in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Download.
- For File type, select Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).
- Choose all pages, or select only the pages you need.
- Click Download and wait for the
.pptxfile to finish saving.
Canva’s menus can vary by account, design type, permissions, and interface rollout. If PowerPoint is not shown, open the full export menu, confirm that the design is a presentation, and try the desktop web editor.
Canva’s presentation export guidance lists PowerPoint alongside other export options.
2. Upload the PPTX file to Google Drive
- Go to Google Drive.
- Click New.
- Select File upload.
- Choose the Canva-exported
.pptxfile. - Wait until the upload finishes.
At this point, Drive contains a Microsoft PowerPoint file. Uploading it does not, by itself, create a native Google Slides presentation.

- Find the uploaded PowerPoint file in Drive.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Open with → Google Slides.
Google Slides can open and edit the PowerPoint file through its interface, but the file may still retain its Microsoft format.
4. Save a native Google Slides copy
- With the presentation open, click File.
- Select Save as Google Slides.
- Google creates a separate presentation in Google Slides format.
- Rename the new file if needed.
The original .pptx remains available in Drive. This distinction matters: a PowerPoint file opened in Slides is not necessarily the same thing as a native Google Slides file. Google’s Workspace instructions for converting Office files describe the conversion as creating a copy.
5. Share or submit the converted presentation
Open the native Slides copy and click Share to set viewing, commenting, or editing permissions. If a teacher, client, or employer requested “a Google Slides file,” confirm whether they want a native Slides file, a Drive link, or a downloadable .pptx. Those are different deliverables.
Method 2: Send the Canva presentation to Google Drive
Canva documents a shortcut that sends the presentation to Google Drive. Canva says the presentation is saved to Drive as a PowerPoint file first, so you still need to convert it in Google Slides.

- Open the presentation in Canva.
- Open the three-dot menu or sharing/export control near Present.
- Choose See all if necessary, then select Google Drive.
- Link or authorize your Google account if prompted.
- Choose the Drive folder and wait for the upload.
- In Drive, open the resulting PowerPoint file with Google Slides.
- Choose File → Save as Google Slides.
This route may be faster, but menu names and placement can differ between Canva accounts. If you cannot find it, use the manual PPTX download and Drive upload method above.
How to move only selected Canva slides
To combine some Canva pages with an existing presentation, use Google Slides’ import function:
- Open the destination presentation in Google Slides.
- Choose File → Import slides.
- Select the Canva-exported PowerPoint file from Drive, or upload it.
- Select all slides or choose individual slides.
- Choose whether to Keep original theme.
- Click Import slides.
Google’s import-slides documentation explains the theme option and selected-slide workflow. For an entire Canva deck, opening the PPTX and using Save as Google Slides is usually simpler.
Will Canva slides remain editable?
Many elements may remain editable, but “editable” does not mean “identical to Canva.” The conversion passes through PowerPoint format, and Google Slides must interpret the exported objects.

| Video, audio, GIFs, and animated media | May disappear, become static, lose timing, or require reinsertion. |
| Animations and transitions | Do not assume they transfer. Canva and Google Slides use different systems. |
| Speaker notes | Inspect the notes area; do not assume notes always survive conversion. |
Canva’s export material warns that animations, effects, music, and animated media may not appear as expected in PowerPoint exports. Treat motion and interactive features as high-risk elements and test them in presentation mode.
How to fix formatting problems after conversion
Fonts changed or text is overflowing
A font unavailable in Google Slides may be substituted. That can alter line breaks, text height, spacing, and alignment. Replace it with a visually similar available font, resize the text slightly, adjust line spacing, or enlarge the text box. On critical slides, reinsert the text manually. If exact typography matters more than editability, use image-based slides instead.
The slide dimensions or right edge look wrong
Compare the Canva presentation’s dimensions with Google Slides. In Slides, open File → Page setup and select the matching ratio, such as widescreen 16:9. Then check backgrounds and objects extending beyond the slide boundary. A cropped edge can result from mismatched dimensions, PowerPoint geometry, or import cropping, so do not assume there is only one cause.

Images are stretched or backgrounds are cropped
Compare the converted slide with a Canva PDF or PNG export. Reposition or replace the affected image, check its crop, and confirm that the background fills the entire slide. For a brand-critical deck, the image-slide fallback below may be safer.

Videos or animations disappeared
Reinsert video with Insert → Video and verify that viewers have permission to access it. Recreate only the Google Slides animations needed for comprehension. If Canva-specific motion is central to the presentation, present from Canva or export a video when playback—not object-level editing—is the actual requirement.
Slides appear out of order
There have been community reports of imported PowerPoint slides appearing out of order. This is not an official guarantee that every import will fail, but if it happens, try uploading the PPTX to Drive, opening it with Google Slides, and using File → Save as Google Slides rather than relying on Import slides. Then verify the order manually.
Google’s community thread documents this reported issue and workaround.
The file still shows as PowerPoint
Drive upload and opening are separate from conversion. Open the file with Google Slides, then choose File → Save as Google Slides. Look for the new Slides-format copy in Drive and keep the original PPTX as a backup.

Check whether you have edit permission for the Drive file and whether the presentation belongs to a school or workplace account with sharing restrictions. If you only have a Canva view link, you do not necessarily have access to export the source. Ask the owner to grant the appropriate permission or provide the PPTX. Avoid third-party Canva downloader sites, particularly for private or copyrighted presentations.

- In Canva, choose Download and select PNG or JPEG.
- Export all required pages.
- Create a Google Slides presentation with the matching aspect ratio.
- Place one image on each blank slide.
- Use the image as the background or size it to fill the slide.
- Add separate text boxes, links, or media only where interaction is needed.
This usually preserves the visual appearance more reliably, but each slide is effectively a flat image. Text and design elements are not independently editable, searchable, or as accessible. It is best for final viewing, branded submissions, and decks where conversion damage is worse than loss of editability.
A PDF is similarly useful as a visual reference or final delivery format, but it is generally a poor route to an editable Google Slides deck. You can upload it to Drive, insert its pages as images, or convert pages to images before placing them in Slides. Canva lists PNG, JPEG, and PDF as presentation export options.

For the least confusing process, use a computer. The Google Slides apps can open and edit PPT and PPTX files on Android and iPhone/iPad, but upload, conversion, and formatting controls may be easier to find on the web.
If you must work on mobile, export or send the PPTX from Canva, upload it through Drive, open it in Slides, and look for the conversion option. If that option is unavailable in the app, complete the conversion later in a desktop browser.
Final check before presenting or submitting
- ☐ The number of slides matches the Canva original.
- ☐ Slide order is correct.
- ☐ Aspect ratio and page size are correct.
- ☐ No text is clipped or overflowing.
- ☐ Fonts are acceptable and consistent.
- ☐ Images are sharp and correctly cropped.
- ☐ Backgrounds cover the full slide.
- ☐ Charts and tables are readable.
- ☐ Important hyperlinks work.
- ☐ Videos play and have appropriate permissions.
- ☐ Audio works for the intended audience.
- ☐ Speaker notes are present if required.
- ☐ Animations and transitions are preserved, rebuilt, or intentionally removed.
- ☐ Sharing permissions are correct.
- ☐ The original Canva design and exported PPTX are retained.
- ☐ The deck has been tested in slideshow or presentation mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer Canva slides to Google Slides without PowerPoint installed?
Yes. PowerPoint is the file format Canva exports, but you do not need the Microsoft PowerPoint application to upload the PPTX to Drive, open it with Google Slides, and convert it.
Can I convert a Canva PDF into fully editable Google Slides?
Not reliably. A PDF is better treated as a visual reference or as slide images. Export the Canva design as PPTX when object-level editing is required.
Should I use PPTX, PDF, or PNG?
Use PPTX for editability, PNG or JPEG for the most consistent appearance, and PDF when a fixed-layout final document is acceptable.
Does Google Slides overwrite the Canva presentation?
No. Canva remains the source design, and Google’s Save as Google Slides command creates a separate copy. Keep the exported PPTX until the copy is approved.
