Large open areas on a quilt top can be filled with scaled-up line motifs, echo quilting, or a custom design worked in sections. In AllPeopleQuilt’s “Quilting with Moxie: Filling Large Spaces,” presenter Beth demonstrates how to adapt simple lines to triangles, echo a shape while leaving room to travel back out, and divide a center block that exceeds the machine throat space.
Choose a design that fits the shape
Start with the boundaries of the open area, rather than trying to fill every inch with a small, intricate motif. In the AllPeopleQuilt video, Beth enlarges familiar “es” and “ls” line designs to suit large triangles. The principle is straightforward: use a line pattern you can quilt comfortably, then scale its sweep and spacing to the negative space.
For another triangle treatment, Beth echoes toward the center and then returns outward. As she puts it, “Another easy way to fill a shape is to echo into the center and then come back out.” Leave enough space between the incoming and outgoing stitching lines to travel back without crowding or crossing the design. If a diagonal feels awkward, Beth suggests thinking of it as a “wonky triangle”—a reminder that the lines do not have to resolve into a perfect geometric point.
Work a center block in manageable sections
When a block is larger than the available throat space, the video’s solution is to mark reference points and quilt one section at a time. Beth marks the center and the centers of the sides, then builds a petal-like path from the top toward the center and out to a side mark. At the mark, she makes a loop and returns to the center before continuing. She repeats the process from the other side.

The transcript does not give marking measurements or section dimensions, so use the block’s own proportions and the space your machine can reach to decide where those reference points belong. The marks provide a guide for keeping the motif organized as you advance through the block; they are not a prescribed sizing formula.
Make a central motif stand out with density contrast
To emphasize a central design, Beth adds denser quilting to the surrounding negative space. The closely stitched area flattens relative to the less-densely quilted motif, making the motif appear to rise visually. This is a design effect demonstrated in the video, not a measured change in quilt loft. Beth describes the option this way: “If you want your center design to stand out a little bit more, you can add some dense quilting in the negative space around it.”

Custom quilting or a paper pantograph?
The featured method is custom, marked free-motion quilting shaped to particular triangles and a center block. A paper pantograph is a different approach: APQS describes tracing a prepared paper pattern for repeated edge-to-edge coverage. The two approaches suit different goals; neither is inherently better for every quilt.

| Custom motif | Choose or adapt a design for the specific shape; marking reference points can help, and a block beyond throat space can be quilted in sections. | You want the quilting to respond to distinct shapes, such as triangles and a central block. |
| Paper pantograph | Trace a prepared design to create repeated edge-to-edge coverage. | You want an overall repeated pattern rather than separate motifs fitted to individual shapes. |
