Build the glowing core from an addressable RGB LED ring and one center pixel, connect both as a single data chain, and place them behind a layered diffuser. A compact microcontroller runs the pulse effect; a battery holder can sit in a pocket while the ring is worn on a faceplate or costume. The Adafruit “Superhero Power Plant” guide is a useful reference design, but its controller and runtime details are specific to that 2013 build, not universal specifications for today’s parts.

What the build needs
The reference design combines an addressable NeoPixel ring with one separate NeoPixel at the center. The ring’s data output feeds the center pixel’s inward-facing data input, so the controller addresses both stages in one chain. The visible effect comes from the physical layers in front of the LEDs as much as from the electronics.
- An addressable RGB LED ring and one compatible center pixel
- A compact microcontroller compatible with the LEDs’ supply, data signal, and programming environment
- Hookup wire, soldering supplies, and a battery holder with a suitable connector or extension lead
- Two pieces of clear or white acrylic for the face, plus tracing paper or printer paper for diffusion
- Optional copper wire for decorative faux coils, kept electrically isolated from the LED board
- Elastic or another secure mounting method suited to the costume
Adafruit’s project guide includes a parts list, wiring arrangement, code, and faceplate approach; its companion Superhero Power Plant guide is the primary reference for this particular build. A separate Unibeam guide shows a different, more elaborate chest-mounted prop using rings and individual pixels.

Plan the electrical layout
Before buying or soldering parts, compare the ring’s diameter and pixel count with the faceplate, then verify the ring and controller are compatible. Addressable LEDs do not all use the same voltage, data protocol, or color order. The older guide’s example uses settings associated with many WS2812-style NeoPixels; check the specifications for the actual LEDs rather than assuming those settings apply.

This is the wiring described for Adafruit’s historical GEMMA-based circuit, not a universal pinout. Use the selected board’s and LED components’ documented power and data connections if they differ. The supply and ground are shared, while the data signal runs from the controller through the ring and then to the center pixel.

Choose a controller and test the LEDs
The guide names GEMMA v2 and GEMMA M0, says it was written for the original GEMMA, and recommends M0 for easier use and compatibility with modern computers. The guide page marks GEMMA v2 as no longer stocked, so treat those names as historical examples rather than a current shopping recommendation. For any replacement board, confirm its software support, output pin, power arrangement, and compatibility with the LED data protocol.

- Load the NeoPixel example called
strandtestand confirm every pixel lights before assembling the face. This helps distinguish a wiring or component problem from an effect-code problem. - Once the test passes, load or adapt the pulsing example. Adafruit’s Arduino example configures 17 pixels and varies a blue channel between brightness values of 25 and 100, occasionally reversing direction for an irregular pulse. Those values describe the guide’s example, not a guarantee that every ring has 17 pixels or that the same effect settings suit every build.
The guide also provides a CircuitPython version for GEMMA M0 and explicitly says the original 8-bit GEMMA does not run CircuitPython. Its code comments describe 800 kHz and GRB as common NeoPixel settings; verify the actual LED type before using them. The example code has not been independently tested here.

Build the face and diffuse the light
Stack two pieces of clear or white acrylic, adding engraved details if desired, then place tracing or printer paper behind the face to soften the individual LED points. The reference design recesses the center pixel behind the ring, which creates extra room for diffusion in the middle. Test the lighting through the assembled layers before permanently securing the electronics; the diffuser and spacing determine whether the face reads as a smooth glow or a collection of bright dots.
For an Iron Man 3-inspired look, the guide suggests engraving white acrylic and coloring the etched areas with a blue dry-erase marker. Its decorative copper wire passes through slots as faux coils. Keep any metal wire from touching the pixel-ring PCB: the guide uses an adhesive layer as insulation, but the decorative detail should remain physically separated from circuit traces and solder joints.

Make it wearable and place the battery
Adafruit’s arrangement routes elastic between the controller and ring, cinching it so it does not cover the center pixel. It can be secured with stitching, a safety pin, or hook-and-loop material. A JST extension cable lets the battery holder sit in a pocket rather than on the chest. Adapt the mounting to the prop’s size and clothing, and secure wiring so movement does not tug on solder joints or pull the faceplate out of position.

The guide reports “many hours of glow time” for its 3xAAA battery holder and says an experiment with a coin cell lasted “about an hour.” It does not report measured current, brightness, or test conditions, so neither observation predicts another build’s runtime. Ring size, LED count, brightness, animation, battery type, and wiring all affect how long a wearable can run. If runtime matters, test the completed assembly at the brightness and effect you intend to use, with the actual batteries and controller.
