The fastest non-renovation fix for an echoey open-plan living room is to combine meaningful floor coverage, lined curtains over major glazing, and upholstered furniture. These treatments absorb or scatter reflections from the hard surfaces that let speech and television sound linger. A small ornament or decorative rug rarely changes a large connected room on its own.

First make sure the problem is reverberation inside the room, not noise travelling through a wall, floor or ceiling. Soft furnishings can make sound clearer and less tiring within the living area, but they are not a substitute for sound-isolation work.

An open-plan room can feel “echoey” for two different reasons. Reverberation is sound that reflects from the room’s own boundaries and takes too long to decay. Sound transfer is noise entering from outside or travelling to another room. The treatments are different.

- Reverberation: voices, television and kitchen activity seem to hang in the air after the source stops; clapping may produce a sharp repeat or flutter between parallel surfaces.
- Sound transfer: traffic, neighbours or activities in an adjoining room remain audible even when the living room itself has been softened. Rugs and curtains may reduce reflections but generally do not stop noise travelling through building elements.
The Australian Government’s YourHome guidance explains the distinction between controlling reflections within a room and controlling noise through walls, floors and ceilings: Noise control. If the main complaint is an outside or neighbour source, investigate the transmission path rather than adding decorative absorption.
Why open-plan living rooms become harsh and lingering
Open-plan layouts join a large air volume to several activity areas. Hard flooring, glass, plaster, stone and bare joinery reflect sound instead of absorbing much of it. Because the living, dining and kitchen zones are connected, a reflection can travel a long distance before losing energy. Speech reflections then overlap the next syllables, making conversation and television dialogue feel less distinct. These conditions are described in the YourHome guidance and in Nicholas Marriott’s practical acoustics guide, published 24 April 2026 and updated 21 September 2026: How to Reduce Echo in an Open-Plan Living Room.
Room height and connected volume matter as much as the visible floor area. A double-height ceiling, a glazed wall or a long unbroken wall can make a room sound lively even when it contains some furniture. Conversely, a smaller room with substantial upholstery and floor coverage may already be comfortable.
Use this treatment sequence
Work from the largest practical reflective surfaces to the smaller details. Change one stage at a time, then listen during normal use so you know which intervention helped.
- Cover a meaningful part of the hard floor with a large area rug and suitable fibrous underlay.
- Soften large windows and sliding doors with full-height, dense porous curtains that have generous fullness.
- Add upholstered seating, ottomans and cushions, and arrange them to define conversation and dining zones.
- If the room remains uncomfortable, add tested fabric-wrapped acoustic panels to the most relevant bare walls or opposing reflective surfaces.
- Use varied shelving, books and soft display objects as supplementary scattering, not as a predictable acoustic treatment.
Start with the floor
Choose coverage that changes the room’s balance
Place the rug under, or substantially around, the main seating group so it covers the floor where people talk and watch television. A small mat in front of a sofa leaves most of the reflective floor exposed and is unlikely to alter the room’s overall decay. In a combined living-dining space, consider a second large rug to establish the dining zone if the first rug does not cover enough of the connected hard surface.
Use an appropriate underlay
A fibrous underlay adds thickness and keeps the rug stable. Select one suitable for the floor finish, rug construction and furniture load; the practical aim is to create a substantial porous layer rather than a thin decorative barrier. Rugs primarily address some mid- and high-frequency reflections. They should not be presented as a cure for low-frequency boom or as a method of stopping impact noise through the floor.

Keep door swings, chair movement, robot vacuums and trip paths in mind. A rug that cannot remain flat or is constantly rolled back will provide less consistent benefit than one that fits the room’s everyday use.
Use curtains to treat glass
Cover the largest glazed areas
Windows and sliding doors are broad, hard reflectors. Full-height curtains made from dense, porous fabric can reduce those reflections when they are drawn. Install enough width for generous fullness rather than stretching a flat, tight sheet across the opening. A track that allows the fabric to stack clear of the glass preserves daylight when you want it while making the acoustic treatment available when the room is occupied.
Remember that curtains are conditional
The effect declines when curtains are open, so they are one component of a combined plan, not the sole treatment. If the room is most uncomfortable during bright daytime hours when the curtains stay open, floor coverage and upholstery carry more of the load. Consider how the fabric will be cleaned and whether it obstructs doors, ventilation or sightlines.
Add absorption around the occupants
Prioritise upholstered seating
Fabric sofas, upholstered chairs and ottomans place absorption near the people generating and hearing speech. They also break up long direct paths between the living area, dining table and kitchen. Cushions add a smaller, movable layer and can be positioned where a hard chair, bench or exposed joinery creates a strong reflection.
Arrange furniture to create zones
Use the seating group to define a conversation zone instead of leaving furniture against the perimeter. A sofa and chairs facing one another help separate the living area from the dining and circulation paths. This is acoustic zoning: it interrupts long paths and places absorption near listeners. It does not seal the room or provide sound isolation between households.
Do not remove useful furniture merely to make the layout look minimal. An open-plan room with a few large, well-placed upholstered pieces generally performs better than one with sparse furniture and many exposed hard surfaces.

Escalate to tested acoustic panels when furnishings are not enough
Choose the surface before choosing the product
After adding floor coverage, curtains and upholstery, identify the large bare wall or opposing reflective pair that still sends strong reflections toward the seating. Fabric-wrapped panels can be appropriate there. Their value depends on effective area, thickness, mounting and the surface they address—not simply on the label “acoustic.”
Check the specification
- Look for tested absorption performance rather than appearance alone.
- Confirm the panel thickness and the mounting method; an air gap may be part of the tested installation.
- Use enough useful area for the room’s scale. One small panel will not transform a large, connected or double-height volume.
- Check fixing requirements, wall condition, cleaning access, fire information where relevant, and whether the finish suits the room.
Panels are a targeted escalation, not a reason to skip the basic furnishings. Nicholas Marriott’s guide discusses the need to match tested performance and coverage to the room: How to Reduce Echo in an Open-Plan Living Room.
Use shelving and plants as support
Bookshelves with varied book depths and soft display objects can break up a broad, hard wall and scatter some reflections. This can make the surface less acoustically uniform, but ordinary shelving is not a designed diffuser and does not offer predictable absorption. Avoid treating a single bookcase as the main solution for a large room.

Plants may provide modest scattering, especially when their leaves interrupt a smooth line of sight, but they are not a primary acoustic treatment. Place them where they help the layout or décor after the substantial reflective surfaces have been addressed.
Compare the options by the problem they solve
| Treatment | Main reflective path addressed | When it works | Important limitation | Installation or use checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large area rug with fibrous underlay | Hard floor in the living or conversation zone | While the rug is laid flat and covering a meaningful area | Mostly mid- and high-frequency reflections; not a general low-frequency or impact-transmission fix | Check coverage, stability, furniture load, door swings and cleaning |
| Full-height, dense porous curtains | Windows and sliding doors | When the curtains are drawn across the glazing | Benefit declines when they are open | Allow generous fullness; check track, door clearance, cleaning and daylight needs |
| Fabric sofa, chairs, ottomans and cushions | Reflections near occupants and long paths between zones | Whenever the upholstered pieces are in the room | Furniture arrangement is zoning, not sound isolation | Keep circulation practical and position seating for conversation |
| Tested fabric-wrapped panels | Selected large bare walls or opposing reflective surfaces | When thickness, mounting and effective area match the tested specification | A small panel cannot treat a large volume | Verify tested performance, air gap where specified, fixing and cleaning access |
| Varied shelving, books and soft objects | Broad, visually uniform surfaces | As supplementary scattering | Ordinary shelving is not a predictable diffuser or absorption system | Use after substantial floor, glazing and upholstery treatments |
Plan coverage for the actual room
There is no reliable universal percentage of a living room’s surfaces that should be treated. The amount depends on the room’s volume and height, the connected spaces, existing furnishings, materials and the placement of each treatment. A percentage copied from another room can under-treat a tall, glazed space or over-treat a compact furnished one.
For a large or double-height room, map the main reflective surfaces before buying anything. Note the hard floor between the seating and television, the largest glazed wall, bare walls facing one another and open routes into the kitchen or dining area. Treat the surfaces that create audible reflections toward the people using the room, then reassess before adding more.

Where painting helps—and where it does not
Painting can improve the appearance and visual coherence of an open-plan room, but a new coat over a hard plaster or masonry surface should not be expected to provide dependable sound absorption. If the room is echoey because of its hard finishes, combine the colour or finish change with a rug, curtains, upholstery or properly specified panels. Keep panels and curtain hardware compatible with the wall condition and any future repainting so acoustic improvements do not create avoidable maintenance problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck whether the changes worked
Listen during ordinary activities
Before changing the room, listen from the sofa, dining table and kitchen while someone speaks, the television is on and normal kitchen activity is happening. Notice whether words become easier to follow and whether the room stops sounding “live” when a source pauses. Repeat the same checks after each major treatment rather than relying on a showroom impression.
Use a clap only as a quick indication
A hand clap can reveal an obvious flutter echo between parallel hard surfaces. It is not a complete acoustic test and cannot establish a treatment percentage or a precise reverberation time.
Treat phone apps as relative tools
Phone applications may show a relative change between two setups, but their microphones and algorithms are not necessarily calibrated measurements. Keep the phone position, room layout and background activity consistent if you use an app to compare before and after observations.
Get an assessment for a defined target
An acoustic consultant can assess a very large, double-height, extensively glazed or persistently uncomfortable room and estimate the treatment needed for a stated goal. The consultant’s work is especially useful when you need a defined performance target rather than simply a subjective improvement. The measurement limitations of informal listening and phone apps are also noted in Marriott’s guide: How to Reduce Echo in an Open-Plan Living Room.
Troubleshoot the result
The room still sounds echoey after adding a rug
Check whether the rug is large enough to cover a meaningful part of the hard floor and whether it has a suitable underlay. If most of the floor remains exposed, treat the largest glazed area next and add upholstery around the seating zone.

The room is clearer but still booms at low notes
Rugs, curtains and ordinary furnishings mainly address some mid- and high-frequency reflections. Persistent low-frequency energy may require room-specific assessment; do not assume that adding another small decorative item will solve it.
The improvement disappears during the day
If curtains are open, their reflection control is reduced. Keep the floor and upholstery treatments in place and decide whether the glazing needs a different curtain arrangement that can be drawn during conversations or television viewing.
Neighbours or traffic remain the main problem
That symptom points to sound isolation or an external noise path rather than internal reverberation. Investigate the relevant wall, floor, ceiling, window or door assembly instead of expecting soft furnishings to block transmission.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Furnishings are substantial but the room is still uncomfortable
Re-examine the large bare walls, opposing surfaces and room height. Tested panels with suitable coverage may be the next step, or a consultant may be more efficient if the space is unusually large or complex.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Have you confirmed that sound is lingering inside the room rather than travelling through a building element?
- Does the rug cover a meaningful floor area, with underlay that suits the floor and rug?
- Can curtains cover the major glazing with generous fullness, and will they actually be drawn when the room is occupied?
- Are upholstered seats and cushions positioned near the conversation area and along long direct paths?
- If considering panels, have you checked tested performance, thickness, mounting, air gap requirements and useful coverage?
- Have you left enough clearance for doors, circulation, cleaning and everyday furniture movement?
- Will you compare the room under the same speech, television and kitchen conditions after each change?
Combining these steps keeps the room open while reducing the reflections that make conversation and television sound harsh. The right amount of treatment is determined by the room’s volume, surfaces and use—not by a universal percentage or a single decorative product.
