How to Refinish a Demilune Table in Soft Black with a Flat Finish

A step-by-step demilune table makeover using soft-black paint, an optional flat protective finish, a gold drawer transfer, and bronze knob accents—with preparation, safety, product choices, and troubleshooting.

A demilune table can be transformed with a restrained sequence: inspect it, clean and lightly sand the surfaces, apply two coats of soft-black furniture paint, and add a flat topcoat only if you want an extra protective layer. In the December 2024 makeover that inspires this method, the table was painted in Ash Fusion Mineral Paint, sealed with Ultra Guard Flat Finish, given a gold drawer transfer, and finished with a bronze-accented knob. The paint system did not require a topcoat; the additional finish was the maker’s choice for durability.

Table of Contents

What a demilune table is—and why the shape suits a flat finish

“Demilune” describes a half-moon table: the front edge is curved while the back is straight so the piece can sit against a wall. The same form may be listed as a half-moon table or hallway table. Its shallow footprint makes it useful in an entry, corridor, living room, or behind a sofa, while the curved apron and legs provide enough shape to reward a simple color treatment.

The featured piece looked antique at first glance but was actually an inexpensive knock-off. Its drawer bottom was pressboard rather than solid wood. That distinction matters because veneer, engineered panels, and solid timber can react differently to moisture, sanding, primer, and decorative transfers. Treat the construction you actually have, not the age the styling suggests.

Decide what the finish must do before buying supplies

Start with the table’s use. A decorative hallway table may need only careful paint application and normal household cleaning. A piece that receives keys, bags, mail, or repeated wiping may benefit from an additional protective coat, provided the chosen products are compatible and the label directions are followed.

Project element What the makeover used What it contributes Required?
Furniture paint Ash Fusion Mineral Paint, described by the maker as an elegant soft black Color and the main opaque coating Yes, or use another paint specifically suitable for the prepared surface
Flat topcoat Fusion Mineral Paint Ultra Guard Flat Finish An extra durability layer while preserving a low-sheen appearance No. The maker states the paint does not require a topcoat
Cleaner A TSP alternative applied with a continuous sprayer Removes dirt and oils before coating Cleaning is essential; this exact cleaner is not universal
Sanding material Light sanding of the whole table Improves cleanliness and mechanical adhesion where needed Use the amount appropriate to the existing coating and product directions
Drawer decoration Gold Harlequin decor transfer and a polishing pad Optional pattern inside the drawer No
Hardware accent Bronze Gilder’s Paste on the knob Optional metallic detail No

If you substitute products, compare four things in this order: whether the coating is intended for the existing surface, whether a primer is needed, the sheen you want, and the label’s application and drying instructions. “Flat” describes appearance, not a guaranteed performance rating.

Prepare the table without trapping dirt under the paint

1. Inspect the structure and existing coating

Check the top, curved front, legs, drawer, and underside for loose veneer, swollen pressboard, grease, wax, peeling paint, and repairs. Open and close the drawer before painting so you know whether it already binds. Photograph or label hardware if you remove it. A stable coating can often be cleaned and lightly abraded; lifting or chalky paint needs more attention before a new finish is applied.

2. Plan for older-paint hazards

When the table’s age or coating is unknown, assume that aggressive sanding or scraping could create hazardous dust. Sherwin-Williams warns that removing old paint can release lead-containing dust or fumes and recommends suitable protective equipment, containment, and cleanup. Do not dry-sand an unidentified finish in a living area. Work with ventilation, isolate the work zone, wear the protection appropriate to the task, and clean dust with a method that does not redistribute it. The makeover table itself was not reported as lead-tested.

3. Remove or protect hardware

Unscrew the knob and set the fastener aside. Removing hardware gives you a clean edge and lets you refinish the knob separately. If a piece cannot be removed, mask it carefully and keep cleaner, paint, and topcoat off the moving parts.

4. Degrease, rinse as directed, and dry

Apply a suitable furniture cleaner or degreaser to every area that will be coated, including the drawer front and edges. The source project used a TSP alternative sprayed from a continuous sprayer; that is the maker’s choice, not a universal requirement. Follow the cleaner’s dilution and rinsing instructions. Let the table dry completely before sanding or painting. Residual moisture or cleaner can interfere with adhesion.

5. Sand only as much as the surface requires

The makeover maker lightly sanded the entire table. A sanding sponge is useful on curved rails and legs because it follows the profile. The goal is to remove loose material, knock down roughness, and create a sound surface—not to erase every trace of the original finish. Sand bare wood, veneer, and pressboard gently; excessive abrasion can cut through veneer or roughen a soft drawer bottom.

  • Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.

6. Remove all sanding dust

Vacuum or wipe the piece with a clean, appropriate cloth, paying attention to the curved molding, leg joints, drawer guides, and underside. Dust left in corners becomes a gritty bump under paint or topcoat. Allow any final wipe-down to dry before opening the paint.

Apply the soft-black paint in a controlled sequence

1. Decide whether primer is needed

Primer is not automatically required for every furniture project. Sherwin-Williams’ upcycling guidance lists primer among its example supplies and notes that bare wood may need an adhesion primer. Use the primer specified for your selected paint and surface when you are coating exposed wood, slick laminate, stained areas likely to bleed, or a questionable existing finish. Let primer dry according to its label before painting. The featured makeover proceeded with two coats of Ash paint after preparation; it does not establish that every surface can skip primer.

2. Paint edges and hard-to-reach areas first

Use a quality brush around the curved apron, inside corners, legs, drawer opening, and any area a roller cannot reach. Sherwin-Williams’ example pairs a brush with a mini roller: the brush handles details and the roller lays paint across broader panels. Keep coats thin enough to level without runs, especially on the rounded front and vertical legs.

3. Roll or brush the broad faces

Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge so overlapping strokes do not dry into visible ridges. Inspect the top from several angles while it is still workable. Flat or low-sheen colors reveal nibs and lap marks once dry, so tip off the final strokes lightly in one direction.

4. Let the first coat dry, then apply the second

The project used two coats of Ash Fusion Mineral Paint. Do not judge coverage while the first coat is wet; dark colors can appear uneven until they dry. Follow the paint label for recoat timing and room conditions. Sanding between coats is not automatically necessary—only do it if the product instructions call for it or the dried surface has a defect that must be leveled. Remove any resulting dust before recoating.

5. Inspect before sealing

Look for thin spots on edges, brush ridges, dust specks, and paint on the drawer runners. Correct defects while they are easy to reach. Test the drawer movement before applying a film finish; paint buildup on contact points can make the drawer stick.

Add a flat topcoat only when it fits your use

The maker chose Ultra Guard Flat Finish after the Ash paint dried to add durability and to try a new-to-her topcoat. She reported that it applied easily, stayed open for a long time, and did not create “ghosting” on the dark color. Those are first-use observations from one project, not independent testing or a guarantee for every surface, climate, tool, or application thickness.

Because the maker also states that Fusion Mineral Paint does not require a topcoat, treat this step as optional. If you use one, verify that the finish is intended for the paint beneath it, mix and apply it exactly as directed, and test the combination in an inconspicuous area. A flat film can still show lap marks, drips, or cloudy patches if overworked or applied unevenly.

Application order

  1. Wait until the paint is dry for the interval specified by the paint maker.
  2. Stir the topcoat gently if its instructions permit; avoid whipping air into it.
  3. Apply a thin, even coat with the recommended brush, roller, or applicator. Keep a wet edge and avoid repeatedly brushing areas that have begun to set.
  4. Allow the coat to dry under the stated temperature and humidity conditions.
  5. Apply another coat only if the label calls for it or the intended use justifies it. Do not assume that more coats automatically produce a better result.
  6. Leave the table undisturbed for the product’s full cure period before loading the drawer or placing objects on the top.

Finish the drawer and knob as optional focal points

Apply a drawer transfer

The makeover used a gold Harlequin transfer on the pressboard drawer bottom. A patterned interior lets you add contrast without changing the quiet exterior. Paint and topcoat the drawer surfaces first if that is part of your plan, then position the transfer on a clean, dry base.

  1. Measure the drawer bottom and plan the transfer placement before removing its backing.
  2. Burnish the design firmly and evenly with the tool supplied for the transfer or a suitable polishing pad.
  3. Lift the carrier slowly, checking that the pattern has released.
  4. Polish the edges with the pad so they lie flat and do not catch on contents.
  5. Apply the same compatible topcoat over the transfer if you want to protect it, testing first because some films can disturb metallic designs.

Accentuate the knob

Bronze Gilder’s Paste changed the knob from a plain fitting into a small metallic accent. Remove the knob when possible, clean it, apply a restrained amount, and let it set according to the paste directions before reinstalling. Keep the treatment consistent with the table’s other metal details; the bronze is an optional design choice, not part of the paint system.

Compare finish paths before you commit

Path Advantages Trade-offs and checks Best fit
Paint without topcoat Fewer application steps and the manufacturer’s stated system does not require an additional coat Protection level for your particular use is not established by this makeover; follow the paint label and allow full cure Low-contact decorative furniture when the paint maker’s directions support it
Paint plus compatible flat topcoat Extra film layer while retaining a non-gloss appearance Additional drying and curing time; compatibility, sheen, and application technique matter Tables likely to receive frequent handling or wiping
Different furniture paint May offer another color, sheen, or substrate specification Primer needs, surface preparation, recoat time, and topcoat compatibility can differ A project whose existing surface or desired color is not suited to the featured paint

Do not select a coating solely because its label says “flat.” Confirm that it is made for furniture or the specific substrate, that it can go over your primer or paint, and that its drying directions fit your workspace.

Common problems and practical fixes

Paint fisheyes, crawls, or separates

Oil, wax, silicone, or cleaner residue is a common cause. Stop, let the area dry, clean it with a compatible method, lightly abrade if appropriate, remove dust, and repaint. If the problem persists, use the primer recommended for the contaminant and substrate.

Brush marks or roller texture remain visible

Heavy coats, a dry edge, or overworking paint as it sets can leave texture. Let the coat dry fully, level obvious defects carefully, remove dust, and apply a thinner coat with the tool suited to the surface. Keep the roller loaded enough to lay paint but not so wet that it floods edges.

The dark finish looks cloudy after topcoating

Cloudiness can result from incompatibility, excessive film thickness, humidity, or brushing a setting layer. The maker reported no ghosting with her first use of Ultra Guard Flat Finish, but that observation cannot predict every result. Test the products together on a hidden area, follow the label’s environmental limits, and stop working the surface once it begins to set.

The drawer sticks after painting

Paint or topcoat may have built up on the runners or contact edges. Let the finish cure, identify the rub points, and remove only the excess needed for clearance. Recoat the exposed area if the product instructions require it, taking care not to create another thick ridge.

The transfer lifts at an edge

Transfers need a clean, dry, smooth base and firm burnishing. Press the loose area back down if the product permits, polish the edge, and protect it with a compatible finish after testing. Do not drag objects across an unprotected design.

What the $29 example does—and does not—tell you about cost

The source maker bought this particular table at a ReStore for $29. That is an anecdotal purchase price, not a current market average or a complete project budget. Your total will depend on the table’s condition, paint quantity, cleaner, sanding supplies, brushes or mini rollers, optional topcoat, transfer, and hardware treatment. Reusing an existing knob and skipping decorative steps can reduce materials; repairing veneer or replacing a damaged drawer bottom can add substantially more.

Make a supply list after inspecting the piece rather than assuming every makeover needs primer, topcoat, transfer, and new hardware. Buy enough paint for the table’s surface area and keep all containers until the project is finished so you can check lot, color, and application information.

A practical completion checklist

  • The table is structurally sound, and the drawer operates before coating.
  • Hardware is removed or masked, and the work area is ventilated and contained.
  • Dirt, oils, and cleaner residue are gone; the surface is fully dry.
  • Loose or hazardous old coating has been addressed with appropriate protection and cleanup.
  • Sanding has been light and controlled, with all dust removed.
  • Primer is used where the selected paint or exposed substrate requires it.
  • Two even coats of soft-black paint are dry before any optional topcoat.
  • The topcoat, if used, is compatible, flat in appearance, and applied without overworking.
  • The transfer is burnished and its edges protected if needed.
  • The knob treatment is dry, the drawer clears its runners, and the entire piece has cured for the label’s stated period.

Frequently asked questions

Is a demilune table the same as a half-moon table?

In this makeover, yes. “Demilune” and “half-moon” describe the curved-front, flat-back form. The maker also noted “hallway table” as another name people use.

Do I have to apply a topcoat over the soft-black paint?

No. The maker says the Fusion Mineral Paint system does not require one. She added Ultra Guard Flat Finish as an optional durability decision. Use a topcoat only when its compatibility and the table’s intended use justify the extra step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the drawer transfer on a pressboard bottom?

You can use the same idea if the pressboard is sound, clean, dry, and smooth enough for the transfer. The example used a gold Harlequin design, burnished its edges with a polishing pad, and coated over it. Test adhesion in a hidden area first.

Should every old table be sanded aggressively?

No. The example used light sanding. Aggressive sanding can damage veneer and can create hazardous dust from old coatings. Prepare only as much as the selected products and the existing surface require, using containment and protective measures when the coating’s age is unknown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should the finished table cure before use?

Use the paint and topcoat labels for the complete cure period rather than relying on a generic hour count. Keep the table lightly loaded until that period has passed, especially if a film finish was added.

What sheen should I choose if I want the same look?

Choose a flat furniture paint or a compatible flat topcoat and verify the label. Flat describes the visual sheen; it does not by itself establish scratch, water, or abrasion resistance.
